The US House of Representatives has just passed the controversial Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, or CISPA (HR 3523) by a vote of 248 to 168. While the bill is intended to safeguard the US against "cyber threats," critics say that it is too vague and broad, and would give government and military intelligence agencies the ability to inspect private data without the use of warrants. While the bill hasn't garnered the same level of outrage as SOPA did in recent months from companies like Google or Facebook (Facebook supports CISPA), web advocates have been vocal in their opposition to the bill.

The Obama administration has already strongly opposed CISPA and with a threat to veto, so it's not likely that this particular version of the bill will pass. But the White House has also signaled that it is interested in some form of cyber security bill, so this won't likely be the final act.

Fucking shit. I wonder what the breakdown was of who was for and against this.

Censorship and internet "security" seem to be one of the few issues a lot Republicans and Democrats can agree on, unfortunately.

Is anyone really surprised? MPAA will keep lobbying until a bill like this gets passed. They pay off politicians and the government to enact and uphold whatever they decide they feel like will increase their profits.

I'm not trying to play high horse here, but no one in my social network (which is almost entirely software and web devs) cared when a few of us started posting links and urged people to read about CISPA. It's sad because most of us (Canadians) gave a huge shit when SOPA was a big deal, but now no one seems to care about CISPA.

Looks like you need the giants of the net to get on board before people care.

They will get it through by renaming it the "WON'T SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN ACT of 2012" and then attaching a rider to it which gives subsidies to hog farmers in rural Arkansas.

The rage in this thread is hilarious. I even agree that it shouldn't be passed but people need to take it down a notch. Especially since the bill will never go into law as is.

How about you save your panic and pissing contest for when it is actually needed?

Am I missing something here? This bill doesn't seem to have much to do with copyright infringement. Looks like it's a bill about sharing information on cyber security, and people are concerned that lack of oversight is going to lead to abuse.

The internet was the last bastion of true freedom in America and the world. Why do you think it got so big so fast and made so many people so much money. You think today's US gov't is gonna allow that to stand?

Even if Obama vetoes it, they'll make some small change he says will make all the difference in the world to show people 'he's on their side'. Then he'll sign what does basically the same exact shit.

Happened with the Patriot Act extension, NDAA, etc. etc. This is no different.

The rage is justified considering this is the same bill as the last two, just under a different name. And with each new bill, the wording gets more, and more broad.

My Representative voted for it, dumb ass dinosaur, can't kick the bucket soon enough. Even if he went though some other corporate lackey would take his place :|

Online protest is a weak form to accomplish anyone so it shouldn't be a surprise.

People need to be vocal with the supporters of the bill and threaten to with their votes, unfortunately we have a very shitty voting population in this country which is okay with the elderly keeping ignorant incumbents in office.

I think the governments treat the internet as they treat the real world, to me it makes sense that they push for this, because right now they see it as their boarders are open.

I think before we can have a bill that is good for the users, some of the problems of the world offline should be fixed first.

*reads roll call*
Of course Lamar Smith voted for it...

We'll see where this goes.

How about we vote for a law when no one can hold public office unless they're under 40 years old and can pass a simple cultural IQ test.

Yes:

Republican: 206
Democrat: 42

No:

Republican: 28
Democrat: 140

Fuck the GOP.

Anyway, shitty news. Empire is crumbling...

I'm actually pleasantly surprised in the amount of Dems who voted no.

Although my rep. was one of the Dems who voted yes...

Thank you kindly. Looks like my legislator voted for the legislation. So much for that phone call I made. :(
I wrote and called. Big difference that made.

I try to be courteous and professional but then I just get ignored. If I did anything to actually get their attention I'd be put on a watch list or arrested.

yeah when it comes to cyber boogeyman stuff the dems are just as bad as the repubs

In this case, no.

edit: too late...

I should be surprised that republicans are supporting this one considerably more then democrats, while in the next breath pushing smaller government, when this is a textbook case of the exact opposite.

What?? Politicians doing something other than what they claim to stand for? Impossible!!

God damn it.

Hopefully Obama vetoes the shit out of it.

I'm thinking he will, NDAA was passed with a super-majority, his veto would have been meaningless.
Thankfully this time, democrats are not voting for it in droves.

Wait, really? I had no idea that was by a supermajority. So all the people saying he could've vetoed it were wrong?

283-136 in the House
86 - 13 in the Senate

Yes, he could have vetoed it still, and forced congress to override his veto...
