The Obama administration will stop deporting and begin giving work permits to younger illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children and have since led law-abiding lives. The election-year initiative addresses a top priority of a growing Latino electorate that has opposed administration deportation policies.

The administration's decision will affect as many as 800,000 immigrants. Two senior administration officials described the plan on condition of anonymity ahead of its expected announcement Friday.

Illegal immigrants will avoid deportation and be eligible for work permits if they arrived in the U.S. before age 16, are younger than 30, have been in the country for at least five continuous years, have no criminal history, graduated from a U.S. high school or earned a GED, or served in the military.

Good. Though, I don't think they should be voting until you get "proper" citizen-ship.

So they can't make them pretty much legal citizens through the lawmaking process so Obama and friends decide to do it through the backdoor again?

Great.

The Obama Administration cracked down on illegal immigration in a way Bush (or any other President) never did, in an effort to spur Republicans into getting on board for reform.

Clearly the Republicans had no desire to do that. In the meantime it's hurt Obama with Hispanics - undoubtedly one reason why Republicans had no interest in immigration reform.

This is probably the right move to make in an election year.

Great.

Yeah. The article says they are totally complete 100% legal citizens now. They each get an American flag and a package of hot dogs. Gotta buy their own buns though.

Crazy.

if they arrived in the U.S. before age 16, are younger than 30, have been in the country for at least five continuous years, have no criminal history, graduated from a U.S. high school or earned a GED, or served in the military.

I don't have a problem with that.

This is fantastic and I stand behind it.

I grew up with quite a few illegal immigrants and outside of maybe one or two causing serious criminal activities, most of the rest were hard working people who led peaceful, happy lives and were greatful for being here. I fucking hate when people lump all illegals in one group.

Who says they will be allowed to vote? You can't do that with work permits. Hell, my wife has Green Card and she is not allowed to vote in federal elections.

Yep, my mother and I have the same status as your wife. Only citizens can vote.

But anyway, good on Obama, this is a step in the right direction.

"Give us your poor, your tired, your huddled masses longing to be free..."
..So long as you're under the age of 30.

I think it's a great step, but the age restriction really bothers me.

Edit:
How does an illegal immigrant sign up for our military?!

if they can do that, why all the fuss about the DREAM Act?

I support this btw, as someone who has met more than one person who never even knew they were illegal immigrants until they were adults trying to obtain documents

You obviously don't know my stance on our government's horrendous job (or willful ignorance) in controlling our borders. My plan is this for ALL illegal immigrants in the US:

1) Actually control the border.
2) We set a date, say two years in the future. By that date, you must register with the government and will get a work permit/residence "in perpetuity" as long as you do not commit a felony.
3) If you want to apply for citizenship, you can and follow the normal procedures/timelines.
4) Anyone not registered after that date above will be deported.

I do not blame people for their parents dragging them across the border, nor do I blame them for wanting to come to the US.

after Jeb Bush said this to Romney yesterday:

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney will have to work up a more convincing message on immigration if he wants to win any votes among the Hispanic electorate in November, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said.
Without hiding his frustration at his party's unyielding attitude, Bush made it clear Monday, at an event organized by Bloomberg View in New York, that Romney needs to change what he says about immigration.
"Don't just talk about Hispanics and say immediately we must have controlled borders. Change the tone would be the first thing. Second, on immigration, I think we need to have a broader approach," Bush said in summing up his advice.

Obama has set a trap for Romney.

If he says anything negative, Latinos will react negatively, if he says anything positive, the tea party folks will react negatively.

Glad to hear

Funny because officially you can't join the military unless you are at least a resident.

So they have to pay taxes or get booted?

Many immigrants already pay taxes.

I don't give a damn about political motivations behind this move, but I'm thrilled that it actually happened. Score 1 for social justice and being a decent fucking human being.

So AMNESTY?!

The DREAM act is a bit more permanent (it will be around after Obama leaves office), it also does not skirt around congress and potentially piss of lawmakers. Normally, presidents try to avoid that, but it's obvious this congress only want to fuck over Obama. So good on him.

Most of the individuals who are eligible more than deserve this. We aren't all day laborers you know.
they are here illegally and now get amnesty plus work permits? this isn't right and just a middle finger to whatever immigration laws are still enforced.

oh good luck explaining to legal immigrants and citizens that don't have jobs they now have to compete with more people for jobs

Good, my green card expires in 2 years and I been procrastinating on applying for citizenship. This gives me a reason to procrastinate some more

Current immigration laws SHOULD be given the middle finger. They're long overdue for an overhaul.

This only affect 800,000 people????? Doesn't that seem low?

My eyes can't be rolling back into my head any further every time you say amnesty. You really think a day in the life of an illegal immigrant just got THAT much easier?

For those specific requirements, yes.

Actually that seems high. How many actually qualify under these guidelines?
