Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 looks sexy

Shame about Touchwiz. If it was stock Jellybean, I'd be all over it. As it stands, it will run ICS with a filthy layer of touchwiz.

They are definitely pushing the productivity angle though. And some of the ideas are pretty neat.

After a long series of post-MWC changes, Samsung has finally readied its long-awaited flagship Galaxy Note 10.1 Android tablet and officially announced its global availability. The release schedule is set to start immediately with the United States, United Kingdom, Korea, and Germany, followed by other markets "starting in August." The initial release includes only the Wi-Fi only and the 3G/HSPA+-enabled variants, with the LTE flavor coming later this year.
Note: The press release is a little ambiguous on whether the "starting in August" bit refers to the four aforementioned countries or the following global availability, but we're inclined to side with the latter. The quote is: "GALAXY Note 10.1 is available in Korea, Germany, the US and the UK while it will gradually roll-out to other global markets starting in August."
Since we played with the Note 10.1 and its S Pen at MWC, it has gained a stylus slot (what was Samsung thinking not including it in the first place?), a bump to 2GB of RAM to match the Galaxy S III, and a 1.4GHz quad-core Exynos processor. Just like the Galaxy S III, the Note 10.1 will come in 16/32/64GB internal storage options with an expandable microSD slot for up to additional 64 gigs. The Note 10.1's 1280x800 screen resolution will not be breaking any records, considering both ASUS and Acer have already come out with higher-than-1080p tablets of their own earlier this year.
On the software side, the Note 10.1 includes:
TouchWiz (of course) with L!ve Panel and Samsung Apps
The famous Smart Stay eye detection feature first found in the Galaxy S III
Shape and Formula Match
AllShare Play and Cast
Music, Game, Learning, Readers, Videos, and Media Hubs (availability varies across locations - more info in the press release below)
"multiscreen" support for a small number of built-in apps. They are:
Polaris Office
S Note
Video Player
Gallery
Email
Pop Up Play
The Galaxy Note 10.1 (8.9mm) is slightly thicker than the original Galaxy Tab 10.1 (8.6mm), most likely due to the need for the S Pen storage slot. The rest of the specs are available below.
Curiously, Samsung was mum on pricing of the Galaxy Note 10.1 variants. Our guess is that at least the U.S. pricing structure will be announced at the August 15th press conference in New York City.

I agree that it looks sexy. Not only that but that Android makes Apple's IOS software look very outdated and I am seriously debating on switching over to Samsung if Apple does not change their believes with the iPhone 5.
 
I think in this particular case, not having touchwiz would detract a lot from the functionality provided there.

Multiwindow and s-pen stuff wouldn't be possible with just stock Android, and a lot of the apps shown are part of the touchwiz suite. It would be great if it looked less ugly though.

True. And multiwindow is nice. Definitely something Google should look into for whichever dessert they decide to name the next OS.

No I would not. I have bought an Android tablet, the Sony Tablet S and it is the biggest piece of mad cow shit ever.
 
I've never owned a Samsung phone or tablet, but from the little experience I've had with TouchWiz I can't stand it. Tablet looks pretty nice, but the edge looks kind of awkward. I didn't even notice it at first.

Do these come with a slot for the stylus, so it doesn't get lost right away?
 
some really nice additions sammy are adding on top of stock here.

pretty impressive. will be interesting to see if it runs that smoothly.


the ICS update hit the OG 10.1 tab btw ..... huge improvement. right down to video playback performance with the stock video player ... i don't even have to overclock.

You had to overclock to be able to watch a video with decent performance on the Tab before ICS? Sounds like Android in a nutshell.

Yeah, maybe. The Sony Tablet S was a complete misfire on their part and I think it is the single device where the Android 4.0 update actually made shit worse.

Then again, the flagship Samsung phone looks like a broken farmer's tool or manure shovel. I will wait for some Tab 10.1 reviews.
 
Why do so many of you just hate TW so much? I mean, talking strictly about the Note 10.1, after watching that video showcasing all the UI features and the S-Pen, it just is way better than what other tablets can do in terms of usability and features. The whole thing to reduce keyboard size and move it around and the W7 style windows splitting into two halves is just great. I think with this tablet, you'd be missing out by flashing stock Jelly Bean.

My opinion of course.
 
That video could not have been a more boring mess. How can they expect people to be excited by that video. Oh look you can do notes/reciepes/maths/.

I hope pricing is good...

blame Nvidia for skipping out on hardware video acceleration in their Tegra 2 design. other SoC's with worse specs could easily do HD video playback because they had that stuff included...

Well it didn't sound like a old GPU problem since a software update wouldn't fix that. More like unoptimized OS. Or the updated build allowed access to hardware decoding I guess. I believe the OG iPads had the same issue with HD mkv.
 
Do we know if this has flash or not? I'm getting a tablet towards the end of the year but its gotta have flash...

Adobe has killed mobile flash. It will no longer be supported on Android. They removed it from the google play store. And due to the lack of support from Adobe future Android OS's will no longer work with it. If you want a tablet for flash you aren't going to find one with any sort of long-term support. Adobe said flash on mobile devices is dead.

Hm.

Now I'm considering just getting this for note taking and whatnot instead of a Samsung Galaxy Note Jr (which would probably be too small for that) and just buy a regular smartphone.

You sure about that? All of the computer screen have been 256 (asus Eee slate and Samsung Slates)

it's purely an Nvidia Tegra 2 problem. they cut some hardware video decoding features from the ARM design when making Tegra 2 so companies who used Tegra 2 had to come up with their own software solutions.

As soon as as I saw the multi window I laughed.

To be fair its more like part of touchwiz, than it is a system thing. Only specific apps can be used.

I'm in the same boat.

After being stuck with an HTC Incredible II for work that never gets updates and is still stuck on Gingerbread, I'm only going with Nexus devices from now on.
 
I'd kill to have something like this for school, too bad it's going to be really expensive.

You can still sideload a flash apk on jelly bean and have it work fine though. Just can't download it from the store since it's "not supported"

All I wanted since this Tablet craze started was to be able to write notes with a goddamned digitizer...

Hopefully the handwriting recognition is good.
