Google Chrome overtakes Internet Explorer as the Web’s most used browser (for now)

I used FireFox for a long time, but it started crashing all the time. I downloaded Chrome...and it doesn't crash, so I use that. Well, maybe every now and then. But not often. It's definitely my favorite browser.

Does Chrome auto-save tabs when you close it? IE doesn't and Firefox didn't the last time I tried it. It should be a standard feature on all browsers.

I get kind of astounded whenever I see commercials for IE9 on television. Seeing Microsoft have to advertise their own browser is a little bizarre.

I'm still glad to see increased competition among browsers even if I don't personally use Chrome. It's sleek and fast, but my browsing experience is so narrowly customized by Firefox addons for which no Chrome equivalents exist that I just can't switch. I'm still on Firefox 4.0 because of these add-on compatibility issues and it took months of increasingly-bad memory leaks just to get me to finally upgrade from 3.6. I sometimes regret always being so far behind in the world of browser tech.

Still using FF4?

You are the new IE6 user, I'm sorry to say.

Can someone explain to me what the hell is happening to Opera. The browser is great, fast, reliable and had lots of features that are nowadays considered standard way before FF and Chrome. And yet it's constantly at the bottom of the graph. Is there a particular reason for this?

I can't speak for Opera nowadays, but whenever I used to try and use it, it felt a lot like a browser for power users rather than for regular users

No, you shouldn't feel sorry for saying that. Those people are ridiculous.

FF4 was released almost a year ago ffs. If some add-ons doesn't work with newer version of the browser go and complain to the author of the add-on or look for a replacement. Even more ridiculous are people who are still holding to FF 3.6 - a browser released in january 2010. :/

FF4 is almost 14 months old now, even just for security reasons (never mind the performance gains) everyone really should be running the most up to date version of their browser.

There shouldn't really be anyone running 3.6 anymore, Mozilla forcibly updated them all to FF11 iirc.

May, 2012: Google’s Chrome Share Up; Everyone’s Else – Down

FavBrowser.com said:
After reaching the 50% market share mark, Internet Explorer reverted some of its gains and is back to 49.87%, 0.13 point decrease.

Only few more points remain as Google Chrome slowly climbs towards the 20% mark, up from 17.41% to 18.05%, 0.64 point increase.

Firefox’s market share is about to fall below Chrome’s, down from 18.65% to 18.16%, 0.49 point decrease.

It looks like Safari has also joined a group of losers this time, down from 9.17% to 9.05%, 0.12 point decrease.

Opera’s market share decreased from 1.63% to 1.57% as HitsLink has since then dropped Opera and replaced it with the Android in the top browser’s report.

That’s all for now, folks.

So, good news for Chrome on two fronts: IE was knocked back down below half of overall global marketshare, and if everything stays on track it will surpass Firefox next month. There are of course several services that have put Chrome in front of Firefox for a while now, such as StatCounter, but one more tracking service reporting the same thing means we can conclusively put Chrome at #2.

I use chrome, though I'm liking it less and less. I don't understand how it can crash so frequently and still suck at gifs with how long its been out. It's no longer really noticeably faster to render than the other main players either, though it does seem much quicker to start up. I'm thinking about going back to firefox...

Google Chrome Grabs 1/3 Of Global Browser Market: StatCounter

Remember when Google’s Chrome browser overtook Internet Explorer as the world’s most popular browser for a week back in May? And next, for a full calendar month?

Well, Chrome is still on top, judging by the latest figures from traffic measurement service provider StatCounter, and it has now even taken more than one third of the browser market worldwide (see graphs below and at the bottom).

For July 2012, StatCounter pegged Chrome’s global market share at 33.8 percent, up from 32.8 percent in June and from 22.1 percent in July 2011.

According to StatCounter’s data, IE remains strong with a 32 percent share, while Firefox is steadily losing ground and currently hovering around 23.7 percent. Apple’s Safari browser comes in fourth with a 7.1 percent worldwide market share.

In addition to grabbing 1/3 of the global browser market, Google Chrome has also apparently become king of the hill in Europe last month, surpassing Firefox for the first time. Chrome is by far the most used browser in South America and Asia, although Internet Explorer still reigns supreme in the US, the UK and Australia.

For your background: Google Chrome was launched almost exactly 4 years ago.

StatCounter’s data has been openly questioned before, but its service is widely used as a standard for measuring browser usage. As long as you realize that these type of stats are simply never 100 percent accurate, StatCounter’s findings are usually indicative of clear trends.

FWIW: StatCounter’s figures are based on data from over 15 billion page views (and notably, not unique visitors which is what rivals like Net Applications measure) from over 3 million sites that run the company’s stats package.

I tried chrome for a bit. Just found firefox easier and faster to use. plus more customisiation.
which is odd since im a google fanboy.

I use chrome solely as my porn browser.

I use firefox as my main browser.

chromium when i want find porn.

See, I never understood this.

I treat Firefox like my tank at this point. It is all tricked out with a bunch of security and privacy add-ons, so if there's any links to sketchy sites, I use Firefox first. All I have on Chrome is Adblock, and that's it. (Don't worry, Gaf is white-listed.)

I don't know, I guess it comes down to how you use which browser.

I stopped using Firefox once it started crashing on me every 5 damn minutes.

Now I use Chrome.

Also, does anyone think that the AWFUL Internet Explorer ads have anything to do with this? I cannot STAND those commercials.

It's ugly as hell.

On every single computer I've ever tried it on, Chrome is noticeably faster then IE, FF, and Opera.

I don't understand why anyone wouldn't use it...

I use Chrome because it is fastest and crashes the least.

But the feature list is pretty terrible and its layout is 100 times worse than Firefox or Opera.

Firefox in steep decline while IE stays stagnant? Fuck this shit!

Side note: at the moment there's not one browser I'm happy with. Both FF and Chrome are annoying me with unexpected behavior and sluggishness, so I'm switching back and forth, even using Opera every once in a while. Quite annoying. Hopefully the next FF version works alright again. I hate being homeless, browser-wise.

I agree that nothing's perfect right now. Chrome seems to have been eating up a lot of memory and getting a bit too buggy for me recently. Firefox has gotten better, but it still is sluggish in spots, especially UI responsiveness, which is my numero uno pet peeve.

It also has the best UI, the best mobile presence, the best syncing solution, and the best extension/app model.

I also think it's still the only one with auto-update. I know Firefox was working on it but I never heard if they actually pushed it out, I recently upgraded my just-for-development Firefox and it was still not seamless.

As soon as Chrome gets a viable alternative to NoSquint for Firefox Ill probably be gone. Nosquint is seemingly incredibly unique for what seems like an obvious addon. The way it allows you to zoom text without zooming the whole page is really nice. And you can do it in extremely customizes percentage based increments, while Chromes built in version only lets you select pre-defined text zoom levels.

I dont even think Nosquint for FF is still being supported, but its all that keeps me on FF.

Edit: I do keep Chrome on my PC though, I love the way it syncs to your phone, that shit is awesome. Bookmarks and everything.

I've tried to use Chrome but some things bug me about it and always makes me go back to Firefox.

Such as Firefox having the arrow pull-down option on the address bar, pulling up all the websites you've typed in there before, allowing easy access to sites you frequent.

Also in a search bar on any website I've been to before, if I left click in it, I get a pulldown of things I've typed into that specific search bar before, which Chrome doesn't seem to do for me.

Chrome is great for automatically translating pages even better than running them through Google Translate, so I still use Chrome for some things.

I use chrome solely as my porn browser.

I was using it for a while and found that they actually have a functional version of Noscript now, but I was getting a lot of crashing issues with Flash. I typically have 1 or 2 streams open at a time, plus maybe a Youtube video or an applet on another site, and for some reason Chrome just kept crashing as a result. Firefox (or more accurately, Waterfox) doesn't do that to me.

Yeah, after the newest Flash update I cannot play Flash videos in FF or IE without them crashing after a minute. Chrome is now the only browser on my PC that can handle Flash. The only thing that bothers me is that it doesn't seem to handle GIFs as well as FF.

And that IE ad freaked me out the first time I saw it. I'm pretty sure that's the first time I've seen an ad for a web browser on TV. Bizarre.
