Inspired by home brewers from across the country, last year President Obama bought a home brewing kit for the kitchen. After the few first drafts we landed on some great recipes that came from a local brew shop. We received some tips from a couple of home brewers who work in the White House who helped us amend it and make it our own. To be honest, we were surprised that the beer turned out so well since none of us had brewed beer before.

As far as we know the White House Honey Brown Ale is the first alcohol brewed or distilled on the White House grounds. George Washington brewed beer and distilled whiskey at Mount Vernon and Thomas Jefferson made wine but there's no evidence that any beer has been brewed in the White House. (Although we do know there was some drinking during prohibition…)

Since our first batch of White House Honey Brown Ale, we've added the Honey Porter and have gone even further to add a Honey Blonde this past summer. Like many home brewers who add secret ingredients to make their beer unique, all of our brews have honey that we tapped from the first ever bee-hive on the South Lawn. The honey gives the beer a rich aroma and a nice finish but it doesn't sweeten it.

EDIT: There is a factual problem in the original OP. That is definitely not a pint. Cheers, Nicktendo86.

Mmmm... those both sound delicious.

That's really cool that there's a beehive at the White House now. Almost surprised someone hasn't tried to spin that as a criticism against Obama yet.

Let's go to the whitehouse and ask Barack.
Party at the White House, y'all!

Many would say this is a subtle jab at the fact that Mitt Romney is a Mormon. I guess that could be true. Is that fair? Well, you can decide. Perhaps a bit a cheap shot. However, at least Mitt Romney is actually a Muslim. Obama was not born in Kenya nor is he a Muslim.

Mitt, what a Muslim :P

I kind of wonder if in the hopefully small likelihood that Romney wins, if he'll tear out the vegetable garden kind of like how Reagan removed the solar panels that Carter had installed?

Don't worry obama will have it there for 4 more years.

Out of curiosity, with all that honey in it, what's the difference between that and mead? It's making me want to play Skyrim again. Stupid bees and their stupid honey.

The Honey Ale ingredients list 1 1/2 oz of Fuggles but the directions only say 1/2 oz. What is Obama trying to hide?

I'm gonna make this (all-grain of course).

I have to assume, btw, the original bill was for .5 oz. of Fuggles at knockout. 1.5 oz. of aroma hops is a lot.

I assume this is a not so subtle jab at people who think Obama is a secret Muslim? Was it really necessary? Furthermore it's not like you can't be a Muslim and drink, people do things prohibited by their religions all the time and still consider themselves one of them.
