The Journey Down - PAYWHATYOUWANT (min.0,25) - 11 AGS awards and you havent played it

Toma

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
Alternative title - What the hell are AGS awards?
The Journey Down - Chapter One (Part 1 of 4 of an episodic adventure game series
vYPvK.jpg

Unfortunately, there doesnt seem to be an OT, so feel free to use this thread as long as you want to talk about the game. And yes, the title was just to lure you in. AGS is the adventure game studio and annually awards games made with it, so its rather unimportant in the grand scheme of things. Actually, the HD version isnt even an AGS game anymore, but whatever. It lured you in, right? Whatever works :p
Here is the link to purchase it:
https://indiegamestand.com/
If you dont feel like paying for it, you can play the retro, non beautysized and non-voiced version here (It also contains less puzzles and less story):

Feel free to share impressions, gameplay hints, jokes you laughed about etcetc in here.

"What is this?" you ask. I shall answer "A fun, memorable and VERY charming adventure game that definitely did not get enough attention."

You play Bwana, and follow him on his journey to uncover the mistories of his ancestor. The game is oooooozing charme and I enjoyed many of its puzzles as well even though they can get a bit tricky later. They start easily enough, though and present a good introduction to the games tone. The game also looks great and the voice actors can be very enjoyable, while, in all fairness, some others are rather jarring. This game is still one of the most memorable Adventure games in the last few years and you OWE it to yourself to check it out at a measly $0,25 price point.
Despite the game being ridiculously cheap atm, some might prefer playing the free version since it does not have the at times jarring voice acting and rather charming pixel graphics. A matter of taste really, if you enjoy the free version consider supporting the developer by buying the HD version for a small amount.

$10,00 - Get The Journey Down, Gimbal AND the next game they put up (not yet known)

This game is not very long at 4-5 hours playtime, but I can imagine you could do far worse than investing $0,25 into bite sized, well produced and very charming gaming good. You now have 85 hours to grab this game from the time this post has been made.

Gaf impressions:
This is without a doubt one of the best point and click adventures I have ever played.

Fantastict voice work, beutiful graphics, good humor, logical puzzles, appealing characters, a great Jazz soundtrack... the game really has a lot going for it. Don't know why it hasn't gained more recognition.

If you have any interest in the genre what so ever you should really give it a shot.

I do own this previously. A pretty nice indie adventure game. Somewhat reminds me of grim fandango or something, at least in style.

Wow the characters are really creepy. REALLY CREEPY. I wouldn't even play the game even they offer it to me for free.

Which they, in fact, do since the classic version is free. Its not as bad ingame though, as they over emphasize the comical nature of the characters (including funnily stupid and nonsensical comments).

I agree. I think the style of animated "dolls" lend itself rather well to that comparison. The conversation and flavor text feel a bit more like Monkey Island to me though.

Helping to bump this thread through the next 4 days will give it a bit more exposure ;) I guess we'll have a few people asking questions too.

Whats your opinion on the Monkey Island/ Grim Fandango comparisons?

Completely agree with the Monkey Island comparison as well. It really does have that classic, golden age adventure game feeling.

Why hide the fact it's episodic with only one chapter out in the whole OP?

What does the first chapter include, is it a different story to the older (imo more lovely) version, is it parts of it, does it go past it?

Wasnt on purpose. I'll add the episodic nature to the OP.

And I havent played the original game, but from what I read its the same game, enhanced with more puzzles and restructured story wise for a 4 part episodic game. They just added stuff to the free version.

Quite amazing. If a game doesnt give a Steam key, the interest goes to almost zero.

Yeah, that is a shame.

Anyway, I bought it, but I don't think I'll be able to try it out for a couple of days. Hopefully it's as good as has been said in this thread.

I already own it but haven't gotten around to playing it. There's only so much time for rad below-the-radar games!

Speaking of which, The Dream Machine is another good adventure game that is largely unknown on GAF. And that one even had a Steam release!

Great assumption for the lack of interest. Maybe people don't like what they're seeing. Adventure games are pretty niche to begin with and not every adventure fan is going to like every game's premise. Loads of games don't get attention, many on Steam.

I liked the original but don't see the need to play a 3D re-imagining. Especially when currently only part one is available.

Edit: not going to reply again because it's clear you're baiting to bump the thread again. Sad. Bump it when there's news, like ch2.

Sure, and that assumption is completely correct and a very big part of the problem. I also recommended Adventure Games in the Stream thread, which got way more attention than this gets. Journey Down is one of the better ones too. You cant deny that more people pick up a game in Steam for their collection. Steam activation is a feature that sells games.

I mean thats great for Indies on Steam, but non-Steam Indies definitely are left out in the cold. Your reasoning is valid too of course. But hardly the Main reasoning as not many people have played it at all.

What is sad is that from every public metric I can observe, indie games on Steam are barely ever played (even if they are bought more than other marketplaces during sales)

Yeah, that is sad too, but in the end that still helps the developers, which I am on a very fundamental level, fine with. Its still supporting the devs, which is the whole reason why buying Indie games in the first place is so important.

People should start playing their games though, yeah.

Well if they wouldn't have so damn MANY then maybe they could get around to playing some of them eventually... then there's this little thing called life which keeps gettin in our way as well :(

don't mind me, i'm just drowning in my backlog right now lol

Ah, yeah. I have the same problem. Probably 50% of my steam library havent properly been tested yet. I am trying to give most indie games a fair chance though, some make for rather good recommendations to gaf.

Now for those still sealed Ps3 copy of Dead Space 2 and Enslaved however...

Wow the characters are really creepy. REALLY CREEPY. I wouldn't play the game even if they offer it to me for free.
Don't play The Dream Machine.

Actually, do play it, it's awesome. Still, creepy characters in this have nothing on Dream Machine. :p
Quite amazing. If a game doesnt give a Steam key, the interest goes to almost zero.
*shrug* People like to have their collection all in one place.

I bought it on Indiegamestand and added it to Steam as a non-Steam game. :D

I sometimes even use it as a replacement for my desktop for my most used programs.
I even added MS Visual Studio to my Steam library...

I wish Steam would track time spent on everything in the library. I'd love to see how much time I wasted in Visual Studio or with the notepad :P

What the hell I'll try it (downloading now). I thought I read the game wasn't that good, but if you guys say it is I'll give it a shot at least. More adventure games is never a bad thing.

30 hours left for this deal!

So bought. These deals are great (and I'm reminded that I need to get back to Geneforge ASAP).

This has been out for a while, though. Hope the series continues, it looks really neat.

Yeah, me too. Googled a bit about a possible sequel but havent found anything.

Anyone want a Desura key for this game? Quote this post and I'll send it to you via PM.

I'll purchase this when I get home today. The only similar games I've played are Full Throttle, which I loved, and King's Quest VI, which I never beat. Granted, I was a child when I got around to them.

And why wouldn't anyone buy it at this price?

No Steam key I guess. I had more success selling people on way worse horror adventure games on Steam (which I still enjoyed).

Second to last reminder: 7 hours left!

Last Reminder: 1:30 hour left!

So I got it and played a few hours the other day. I like it so far, but I had to turn the voices off and turn the subtitles on. I'm not a big fan of the main character's voice, and I like the music a lot.

A lot of the items make sense and I like the different hints that are given out when you use the wrong item. For example,
throwing the fish at the bird elicits a "That seems like a waste!" even though it has a cut scene for it. So I knew I had to combine something with the fish to get it to work.

I won't play the original version but I also can't help but think the original graphics were better. There's something off about the framerate of the 3-d models moving around.

Overall, a good game and I still can't believe people didn't spend pocket change to get it. Especially GAF.

Loved it. Awesome visuals, godly music, and some fun puzzles.

Though episodic gaming can be such a buzzkill sometimes. Right as shit started to get crazy, the episode ended =[

Oh well, I guess they hooked me. Hope episode 2 isn't too far off.
