PS3 file server

mrklaw

MrArseFace
from Red Kawa (the guys who do PSP video 9 I think...) http://www.redkawa.com/

apparantly lets you connect to your computer using the ps3 internet browser and lets you download files onto the PS3 HDD. Saves transferring to an external device on your computer, lugging it to the PS3 and copying back across.

Exactly what I've been looking for, nice...

Awesome! Testing this out with my PSP right now, and I can install & use the server but can't download anything with my PSP. I'm getting HTPP 401 errors, but with no way that I can find to set permissions in Red Kawa this might be fun to fix. :P

Glad you like it. You can pay me back by telling me how to get a .mkv file working on the PS3. Its 720p h264 with AC3 audio. I know I'll probably have to transcode the audio but the video should be fine (and is the one that'd take ages to transcode)

Is there a simple app that'll just split it out into a .mp4 somehow?

I can't seem to download any files with my PSP. I'm getting this error message:

HTTP ERROR: 401

UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS

RequestURI=/download.jsp

You'd have to demux it (http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=MKVExtractGUI for example) so you get a video stream and an audio stream. And then after converting the audio (if needed) remux it to mp4 (I did it once with VLC, there may be other tools).

at the bottom of the page there's a settings link where you have to add the directory you wanna be able to download from.

yea i'm dumb

when i download .mpg it works fine now but when i try to download mp3s i get "insert storage media at save destination"

Thank you KurowaSan! That did the trick. :)

Edit: Well I spoke too soon. It now works when accessing the directories on my PC, but on my PSP I still get the HTTP 401 Error. Weird.

For some reason some files are transferred on the PS3 HDD. Others require a Mem stick (can only be saved there)

If an mp3 file name has spaces in it, it can only be saved to the memory stick... that's through trial and error. No spaced, and you can save to the HDD.

Also, make sure your access is allowed in the settings, or you will get a network error...

The PS3 browser is REALLY good.... Much better than any other console base browser. (not that that's saying much, but still). This is a very nice start Sony has. Plus the fact that it supports keyboard makes it all the better. If you have an HDTV, this is definitely a decent alternative to browsing on the PC.

what? are you using the same browser as me? Its so slow its almost not worth the trouble of opening it

Odd... mine is super quick... Are you using wireless or hard wired? I have a 60 gig, but I'm sticking with an ethernet cable... Wireless = latency, even if it's just a minute amount. I'd rather not.

bear in mind its on your LAN not technically internet, so it should be pretty speedy. Although if you're using wifi you'll get slower speeds.

I use wireless and get the same speeds that I get on my computer wired.

You should be able to copy your files from your PS3 to your computer too right?

No. The software is only one way, as it's only installed on the pc. If you had Linux installed sure, but not with this program alone.

I'm not sure if this software allows it, probably doesn't, but to upload things from the PS3 wouldn't require software to be installed on it - the browser does support uploading, AFAIK, so if the server software allowed it, it ought to be no different to uploading anything else to another machine or server.

Indeed, but then how would you go about browsing what's stored on the PS3, or any drive or memory card you may have connected to it?

Actually, I've just checked and you can only upload content saved under 'Photo' currently. I'm not sure exactly how it works, but it is supposed to work according to the manual.

Has anyone checked whether you can stream files via the PS3 browser?

I was considering setting up my server as a 'website' so I can't stream media.

your Internet link is so much slower than either a wired or wireless LAN link it doesn't matter (unless you're just moving things between devices on your LAN, in which case wired is going to be faster).

Anyone know what media can be played over the network? Photos can be directly viewed, but I'm not sure what else.

Anyone know if there is a way to view thumbnails of the photos from a folder?

How about copy an entire folder of photos? (individually copying them would suck).

BTW - File transfer speed when copying to the HDD is NICE!

for photos etc just copy them onto a big usb stick or similar and 'multiple copy' them.

Photo album slideshow is very cool.

Short update on this - I posted my problem on the Red Kawa forums & this is the reply I got from the developer:

"We'll have to take a closer look as to why its not working with PSP's. It's probably a PSP-specific browser issue."

For anyone wanting to use this with your PSP - sounds like we can't. Even though it clearly states on the frontpage that the File Server will work with both the PS3 & PSP, it doesn't look like it will.

Its either a case of false "advertising" or they never actually tested this on a PSP.
