The Artist - 9/10 Who can hate this film? Put aside all the award season hoopla that doesn't really matter, this is like the sweetest, richest cinematic chocolate you could buy.

It ties entirely into the idea of being able to trust the impression of reality being presented before you ala The Precogs' visions being accepted as fact. And because it's the only way Anderton is able to get what he wants and has been striving for.

But yes, ultimately you have the vault-keeper putting Anderton into stasis, and while we're very deliberately pushing in on his eyes and observing his neural activity, we get the line 'It's actually kind of a rush. They say your whole life flashes before your eyes. That all your dreams come true', followed immediately by a cut to the impossible events that happen: Anderton's wife suddenly fighting for Anderton, Burgess suddenly being uncharacteristically sloppy, pre-crime being dissolved, Anderton reuniting with his wife and another baby on the way while Agatha and the other precogs are free to live in an idyllic cottage on a mountainside. What cements it is when Spielberg changed the ending from the theatrical print to remove the text explaining that crimes and murder eventually returned - thus removing any kind of negative connotation and in so doing removing any semblance of reality that ending had once been afforded.

Interesting. I will closer attention the next time I see it.

I've read this here before but even allowing for this actually being the case (I don't know if there were any hints in the film towards this but I'm sure you have examples) how does that thematically tie in to the first half of the film?

Spoiler alert: It doesn't

Sorry if this is kinda off topic, but I'm not sure where else to ask. So I got The Hobbit blu ray, and I read on Amazon's webpage that it has an aspect ratio of 1.77:1. Doesn't this mean that I shouldn't get black bars when watching it on my TV? I really don't like black bars.

Why?

I was gonna buy tickets to tomorrow night.

What made it so bad?

The Great Gatsby - The film looked and sounded as if it had been constructed entirely out of a bunch of trailers. The director eschews focus on the central characters, opting for landscape shots of CG sets and party fodder even during some of the most revealing moments of the protagonists. The pacing is horrendous, as the director never lets the characters settle in their surroundings. The camera is frenetic, suffering from a severe attention deficit. The camera closes in on ancillary characters and random action at the most inopportune of times. The soundtrack is one of the worst I've ever heard, and no I don't mean in terms of quality, but rather in just how much each and every song seems out of place for the setting and period. Sure the lyrics of some of the songs seem to pertain to the scenes in a rather adolescent and obvious way, but their novelty and lack of subtlety made them all cringe-worthy. Rap songs and pop songs that you could hear a few years ago on MTV or BET have no place in such a strong period piece that sports such an amazing era of music, rife with undiscovered gems and lost classics. Baz Luhrmann makes Zach Snyder seem like Werner Herzog. The funny thing about the film is that it really does serve as a great analogy of the dandy life found in the Great Gatsby. The film is just as excessive, artificial and empty as the lives of the spectating bourgeois. I would say only about a third of the film is truly devoted to building a story rather than schilling for its billboard ready soundtrack or the choreographer who spent all that time on those dance numbers. This is Great Gatsby the MTV version, and somehow manages to make the Robert Redford version seem masterful. 5/10

...I try to respect everyone's opinion, but I've never felt more justified with my complaints of a film.

just noticed that Mathieu Amalric is in Munich. guess i'm watching that tomorrow. or maybe i'll just rewatch the Diving Bell and the Butterfly.

The Master 6/10- wasn't too impressed with it visually, besides that one lawrence of arabia-esque shot, but i've already seen LoA so. good performances.

"They've got individuals, we've got a team."

Yay, someone else saw it

Yeah, I could see how the rugby stuff could tie in. Between that and
the man who returns to his family gone and then pulls his head off and the trees fall and it rains blood, what an ending

Regarding Minority Report, I don't really care about
the ending being real or not.

What bugs me more is
how the heck did Lamar even initiate his plan to frame Anderton? Did he just hire a random guy and pay him to stay in a room? Surely, that wouldn't be enough to get the precogs to predict the murder. The only reason he goes on to murder the guy is because it was predicted. The prediction itself put it into motion. Why would the precogs predict something that would only happen if they predicted it?

Maybe I'm missing something.

Welcome to the pre-determination paradox.

Assuming your TV is 16/9 you shouldn't. What you should get though, is a lot of flak.

Iron Man 3 (dir. Shane Black)

While not the complete success that the talent both in front and behind the camera suggested it could have been, Iron Man 3 is still a fun, funny, and entertaining summer blockbuster.

I have to say that Guy Pearce is a better Val Kilmer than Val Kilmer is these days.

Watching Punisher War Zone again, this time with the commentary.

"Sometimes I'd like to get my hands on God."

SO FUCKING GOOD

Such a great looking movie, too. Some stuff straight from the comics, with that three-colours style. No wonder they spend a lot of time talking about it. The running gag of STOCK SHOT had me laughing. Sounds like they had tons of fun making it.

Punisher War Zone, Dredd, The Raid are great buddies to have. Just over-the-top, tight, brutal and fun action movies that know exactly what they are.

From a stuntwoman to action movie director, Lexi Alexander just pulls off the perfect Punisher movie. Thomas Jane was fine, but Ray Stevenson IS Frank Castle. That hotel action sequence, he wastes like 40 dudes non-stop with creative action choreography rather than just mowing them down in one spot, 80s action style. Impales a dude on a fence and then just curb stomps him! So many cool deaths in it. The recruitment parody of Fahrenheit 911 is fantastic. And those damn parkour dudes in movies getting their comeuppance, what a great gag.

Dominic West is great as Jigsaw, that makeup is fantastic. LBJ is a great scene stealer as Jigsaw's whacked out, close combat right hand man. Wayne Knight was cool playing it straight.

The How Did This Get Made podcast on this was great, too.

I just watched The Place Beyond the Pines.

Damn. What a great movie. Why can't more movies be like this? I knew nothing about it going into it, hadn't seen a trailer, ect. Every time I thought they couldn't surprise me any more, they did it again. And it all connects so well.

punisher warzone is one of the best comic book movies of all time imo. good to see you enjoyed it.

dredd and the raid definitely felt like companions to it.

I enjoyed it a lot as well. Definitely wasn't what I was expecting.

Star Trek Into Darkness

what can i say? I loved it. Non-stop thrilling action for a coupla hours of great spectacle. Benny Cumberbatch curbstomps the rest of the cast with ease and he's worth the price of admission. Deffo a great blockbuster, liked it way more than IM3

Seeing it tonight after about a month of hesitation.

Planet of the APES (1968 version)

This was kinda dull and boring for most of it, although it was funny in an ironic way in certain parts, mostly Heston uttering any of his well-known lines. :P The YOU MANIACS! YOU BLEW IT UP! line cracks me up just thinking about it.

Star Trek Into Darkness is an insulting rehash of
The Wrath of Khan
. It is dumb (
fist fights with Khan vs the cerebal chess game of "the wrath of khan"
) and has very little internal logical consistency. But hey, it has some cool "pew pew" moments.

"I love movies but there's so much trash" is also true (more true), which is my point: no point really to perpetuate the idea that horror is worse by default.

Anyway random horror movies I see on the front page of netflix WI that I'd recommend (not all recent): The Faculty, Slither, Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil, The Innkeepers. Innkeepers is the best of those.

You have to be high on drugs to recommend The Innkeepers over those movies.

Have you seen Conquest for the Planet of the Apes? That is some great stuff. The last great PoTA movie until Rise.

The Innocents
10/10
Beautiful looking and sounding, superbly acted by everyone and really good written story. It is incredibly modern and it was surprising in so many ways. I really did not expect this from such old B&W movie. Just amazing.

Spend my Friday night with a good friend, good scotch and good movies:
Blade Runner - Final cut. Superb movie. *****
Apocalypse Now - Theatrical cut. Basically perfection. Looking at the pacing; the movie comes to a weird halt when Kurtz' camp is reached but Marlon Brando and especially Dennis Hopper's performances are so perfect that it doesn't even drag and it actually is a great climax to this surrealistic fever dream of a movie *****

Hi guys. I'm drunk, so bear with me. I just wanted to say good bye because I appreciate and respect many of you. I sitting here thinking stupid stuff. I don't think I'll be coming back or want to. I feel like an idiot, I'm emotionally fucked up, and I'm just too embarrassed to ever want to come back or post here again. So goodbye.

edit: I just read the thread about your dog, which I suppose it's what made you get away. Lol, mate, seriously? A bunch of idiotic posts is enough to make you leave? Stop taking such bollocks so seriously and don't let them get to ya. Comon, Gaf is worth more than that horseshit

If this has anything to do with the nonsense in that thread about your dog, it was the other posters that were mostly at fault. You really don't have much to be ashamed of there.

Fuck the assholes in your thread, dude. Don't let them get to you. At the very least, stick around FilmGAF. You could just bookmark this thread.

I tend to lurk this thread, more than post in it, because i'm normally quite self-conscious about my impressions. So it probably doesn't mean as much coming from me, than the others. But don't leave this thread man. We all have times we're down and drink never helps, but this thread would be losing another good person, if you did leave.

I just finished all 10 hours of The Human Condition and I seriously feel like crying. And I never cry at movies.

I watched first two parts two nights in a row and got a little burnt out, especially after the second part felt like it dropped a tiny bit in quality compared to the first. But otherwise, I was really blown away. The story was straightforward, easy to follow, and Kobayashi didn't attempt any dazzling camera work that would have been distracting or taken away from the focus on Kaji's plight.

Really looking forward to part three, but it's hard to find such a large chunk of time to watch such a long film.

And CFK, you're a credit to this thread and your departure would leave quite a hole, so please think twice about leaving.

It took me a while to find a weekend where I could dedicate time to watch all three. It was worth it though, I doubt I'll ever have another movie related experience like it.

I do think the second is the weakest, though. But by no means is it bad, all 3 are incredible.

It has Eli Roth in a starring role, so that's a big NOPE for me.

It wasnt bad, although the whole plot is kinda funny in how it unfolds
aka killing every single character.. you think the last remaining girl is going to survive then they kill her with a tsunami

You should stay, man. I remember looking at that thread you posted and thinking how dumb everyone had to be to jump to conclusions about you being a bad human being (seriously, that's a ludicrous leap). I was going to post in there and get after some folks, but I figured that'd do more harm than good and I'd just get the banhammer flopped out upon my forehead. Some people just like to be heard, even if what they have to say is utterly worthless. Thing is, most of GAF has that same mentality. Don't let those posters push you away from a good community with even better sub-communities.

Stick around.

GAF is not that big a deal. If Sculli can continue to post here every day, anyone can.
