Researchers at Granada University in Spain have found that beer can help the body rehydrate better after a workout than water or Gatorade.
Professor Manuel Garzon also claimed the carbonation in beer helps to quench the thirst and that its carbohydrate content can help replace lost calories, The Telegraph reports.

The study involved a group of students who were asked to work out until their body temperature reached 104 degrees. Researchers then gave beer to half of the students and water to the other half.
Mr. Garzon announced the results at a press conference in Granada, saying the hydration effect in those who drank beer was “slightly better,” The Telegraph reports.
A cardiologist with the Real Madrid football team, Dr. Juan Antonio Corbalan, told the paper he long has recommended barley drinks to professional sportsmen after exhausting activities.

Recovery
Work your muscles and they’ll start to fall apart. Your body rebuilds them, makes them stronger and gets them ready to face the next workout. Protein, carbs, vitamins, and specifically antioxidants help put things back together. The latest research has found that beer has almost as many antioxidants as red wine, which is saying something. So how do beer and fitness go together at the recovery stage? A dark beer a few hours after a workout can deliver a good dose of antioxidants. Still, you’ll probably want to reach for water and a healthy snack -- like fruit and yogurt -- immediately following your routine at the gym. Hydration Think that the alcohol in beer will dry you out? Think again. Researchers at the Granada University in Spain have found that beer can provide better hydration than water in some instances, like after a workout. Professor Manuel Garzon, the head of this study on beer and fitness, asked students to sweat it out in 104°F weather. Then he gave half of the students water and the other half beer. He found that the students who had a pint were slightly more hydrated. So does this mean that you should slam a cold one after a run? Probably not. While beer is 93% water and appears to hydrate you better than H2O alone, it’s not the best thing after exercise. Drink water and have a piece of fruit instead. However, don’t pass up a pint the night before a big workout for fear of dehydration -- seems that some beer won’t dry you out as much as you thought. lager lessons Benjamin Franklin once said, “Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.” Whether you’re religious or not, you can probably agree that beer is proof of some sort of positive force in the universe. It makes you feel great and helps heal a broken body (and, sometimes, a broken soul). Drink beer in moderation -- too much of a good thing, even beer, can be very bad. Alcoholism can lead to liver problems, kidney disease, heart disease, and a shattered social life. However, it turns out that beer is good, even if you’re a fitness nut.

Nobody is saying its better than a freshly made berry smothie but it is supposedly better than gatorade or a vitamin water.

I don't know how it slip by me. I apologize. Title should say post workout beer. My words were in the wrong order.

I don't know if it's broscience or not, but people tend to say that you need carbs after a workout, and beer would certainly provide that.

Alcohol drops your testosterone though. And it's a diuretic on top of that. Plus, beer companies filter out the yeast so you don't even get the benefits of all those nutrients and vitamin B.

I am addicted to having an ice cold beer in the shower after a run. I get back to my place, drink a big glass of water and chill for 15 mins, then hop in the shower with a cold beer and feel like a million fucking bucks.

This is normal and normative. It's when people speculate about what this means when it gets into quack terrorizes. Especially the GI spike folks, since it's normative unless you have diabetes or or similar illness such as pancreatic/thyroid/kidney/liver disease.

I like to work out on an empty stomach.I used to run (I gotta get back into it but depression lol) 4 miles ever other day. And felt amazing after having a nice meal.

So is sugar but that doesn't mean you should eat chocolate and ice cream after every work out.

*Muscle building work out.

True, but once we get into the subtleties, it's much less different.

Like, yeah, you should not gorge on junk food, but eating what is consider by the mainstream as a balanced meal is not detrimental if you are healthy. Other rules apply if you are obese, diabetic, of senior age or other such illnesses/ages.

Science is never wrong though right?

But in all seriousness, is it worth it to drink a beer to have slightly better hydration, when regular water has almost the same effect, with none of the disadvantages? No alcohol that affects your liver, no empty carbs you can probably get from your post workout shake or meal or supplement, no diuretic effect on body etc.

Like Arnold said, why take something the body doesn't need?

Mild dosesof ethanol are fine, empty carbs? You mean carbs with hydration and vitamins are worse than carbs with hydration and vitamins?

You sound like you are genuinley worried for peoples health if they have a bloody beer.

Huh? I thought this was well known. Same with sugary stuff.

One beer won't affect your liver(to an extent that will be harmful). TBH I'd rather drink a beer after workout than some of these artificial shakes. Btw..too much protein isn't especially great for your liver too.

The irony when I'm actually sitting here drinking a nice cold one as we speak. No I'm just saying, if someone is working out, trying to get in shape, I wouldn't recommend them to drink a beer after their workout, as opposed to water before, during and after.

Nobody is saying drink beer before or during, so forget that. As for after, you have evidence it is better than water in some ways, but you don't trust it, so you say water, for reasons. Cool. Water is fine too.
