GAF: PS3 owners Demand Keyboard and Mouse Support for UT3!

Mark Rein mentioned in a recent interview that if we make enough fuss about having mouse and keyboard then they will give it a higher priority. Well lets make a big fuss.

Using a PC as a server for PS3 games?

Yes. Absolutely. There's no question that that's something that people want and which we want. We want to be able to tell our publisher "hey, we want you to go out and host a hundred servers for the PS3" so that there are loads of high bandwidth dedicated servers on day one. So they'll go to a hosting service which has racks and racks of Linux boxes and they'll host the servers and they'll click the box which says "advertise to PS3." For sure, that's a benefit. People also ask us whether we'll support keyboard and mouse on PS3.

I was just about to ask that very question.

We might already, I don't know. Actually, I've never asked our engineers the question. [Laughs] There's no reason why we couldn't, except for the problems I mentioned earlier. Is that fair to the people who won't be playing with keyboard and mouse?

What about some sort of manual calibration in the options menu which allows you to set the game up for either a controller or keyboard and mouse?

I don't know. The other problem is, you have to look at what options are worth delaying the game for. We want to ship the game as soon before Christmas as possible. So an option like that isn't very high on our list of priorities. I'd be interested to see if people really wanted it or not.

EDIT: Looks like it might be already in but they still iffy about it.

GAF PS3 Owners: We Demand Keyboard and Mouse Support for UT3!

I want key board and mouse support! I'll start sacrificing the virgins... And since these boards are full of them... ;)

Let's not think about it. Let's just say yes - do it Epic. You hear me Epic? I know you hear me.

As for balance. I'm picturing something similar to Resistance where you have control in the lobby on what type of game you enter.

I want Jogcon support.

KB/M support implies a lot of things.

You have to take into account that if they do KB/M support, they need look into:

- Server filtering based on input device
- Balance the aiming mechanics and "speed" of the game to account for inter-device play
- How many people would use KB/M? I mean really...the whole appeal of a console system is the ability to play on your couch. This feature would likely be utilized by less than 20% of the audience.

Pretty sure it's already in

Beyond that though, there's a larger issue - Epic has repeatedly stated that they've tweaked the gameplay for the console versions (slower, presumably). If this is the case, then simply plugging in a kb/m combo might not result in a 'true PC' experience in terms of control and responsiveness.

Why would this be a problem? Game speed settings have been in UT for as long as I can remember (which may not be very long, but it's been in there), and adjustable aiming mechanics should really be as simple as turning aim assist and turning acceleration on/off. Server filtering should not be a problem either, as kb+m could be easily identified as USB devices.

I thought M&K was a done deal. All you PS3 owners better support this cause. Unreal with a controller ***shudders***.

Can a Mod change the title. It should read:

GAF PS3 Owners: We Demand Keyboard and Mouse Support for UT3!

No it shouldn't. I am a GAF PS3 owner, and you input device zealots do not speak for me.

For fairness, it would need to be filtered by input device and that would break up the population you can matchmake against.

If it isn't filtered, one of the inputs will have an advantage.

I prefer pad, not because it's more leet, but because it's a single device and I am on my couch.

Given a long enough timespan, the percentage of online pad players will reduce to approximately 0.05%.

That or the ps3 community gets split into two divisions. The hardcore and the gimpified couch pansies.

Some people are good with a Gamepad.

Some people are good with a KB&M.

Do not force someone to use a control scheme they are not comfortable with, this = LOST SALES!

Hell, I got my ass kicked in the arcade Tekken 5 by a kid using a Dual Shock 2. Did Namco pussy foot around the issue, or did they simply . . . Let people use what they're comfortable with?! :O

For ****s sake, stop asking for something that's already in the game

For those of you hardcore PC purists, mouse and keyboard controls will be available in the PS3 version through the USB ports on the front of the machine. In addition, the Sixaxis controller will get its usual nod and the motion sensor can be used to control where you look.

from a recent assspy preview, and its elsewhere as well

Just how long are we talking about here?

Anyway this thread has already run its course, especially since Lord knows this is starting to turn into a pad vs kb/m argument and I can only tolerate so many of those per week.

I'm a PS3 owner and I want KB/M AND PC-play.

Allow server filtering by platform/input/movementspeed and there's no problem.

We need mouse and keyboard support for great justice!

... and hell no, I'm not buying a PC as someone stated before. Relatively new MacBook FTW!

-they're not sure yet whether to implement M+K because of the balance issue between the two controller types

Today from GS interview.

If there's no way to make pad only servers, 2 weeks.

Tops.
Edit: actually I think I was a bit harsh, there might be late buyers. 1 month and 3 days!

QFT.

Unless PS3 m/k players can cross platform compete against PC players! :-0

Have a link to that interview? The one I've read seemed to suggest that Mark Rein didn't actually know if kb+m support was or wasn't already in.

Why wouldn't it be filtered? That seems like it would be a pretty simple thing to implement.

In all my years of reading gaf, this is the least likely statistic I have ever seen.

Isn't the question less about keyboard and mouse (I'm sure it'll be there) and more about how fast the game will be? There's little point in playing with a keyboard and mouse if the game has been slowed down to a major extent to work on consoles.

I'm inclined to think its a bit of a mistake anyway, beyond comfort issues, dividing the community up between those with kb/m setups and those without is going to cause problems

either the kb/m is flatly superior, or the game is tweaked in such a manner that using the kb/m is either oddly restricted, or just feels really goofy
