Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction Official Thread

So I noticed during the demo you couldn't change look inversion (y-axis). I really hope this is available in the final game. I need my inverted T-T

I think he's referring to the fact that each Castlevania (Metroidvania) is very similar to the previous installment with some minor refinements. No drastic changes between each iteration.

BINGO

The most unsuspecting part is how impressive many of the textures in R&C are. I think that's what gives it that cg cartoon look, in that it looks clean but when you look for it, the detail is very much there. Quark's gold statue has some very nice gold/metal texture actually. The glass bridge that leads to it has some crazy refracting glass quality to it, When you zoom in to over the shoulder view to shoot Ratchet and Clank look OMG awesomely detailed, etc. etc.

I just played it again, and it's really so nice how seamlessly one gameplay segment flows into another.

I also wonder if all of their cutscenes are recorded video (I know they use their engine to make them, but I wonder how many of them will be fully realtime in a final game)

Yeah, that's a bit of a bummer. I really wanted to invert X axis camera control, unless I'm in over the shoulder view. I really hope the full game will allow that.

First time i've ever played any R&C game and i'm sold.

Don't think i've heard it mentioned but if you have a 5.1 stereo setup the game sounds absolutely fantastic. You get a complete 360 degree sound stage with distinct explosions (plenty from the sub channel) and sound effects coming at you every which way. I actually found myself a few times not moving just to listen, it actually felt like a city was being attacked around me. Playing this game with just TV speakers doesn't do it justice. I'm guessing it has an uncompressed PCM track since my receiver stayed in PCM mode and didn't switch to DD or PLxII. Would be curious what the official word is.

Only slight negative i saw was some tearing during the cutscenes but they went away once you start playing.

I really can't wait to see some of the levels with crazy atmospheric effects and space combat sections on my HDTV. Metropolis is a nice enough level but doesn't really evoke a OMG STUNNING SCIFI VISTAS reaction from me.

you can invert the x- and/or y-axis controls in the final game.

you also can switch to lock-strafe, which gives you controls like an fps and a reticule whenever you have a weapon equiped (instead of the wrench)...

demo just doesnt have the full pause menu, but it is all there in the final :-)

I'm guessing there's no way to bring up the weapon upgrading/sphere board in this demo? Tried all the buttons.

You have to go to a weapons vendor, and Ratchet is a bit busy escaping Metropolis to stop for one. So you'll need to reach the second level, which isn't in the demo

Awesome! How long is R&C? I thought I heard 12hrs?

Thanks JS, i was worried ~__~

Perhaps I'm wrong, but it seems like there are less enemies on screen in this demo. Additionally, when the first building collapses, you no longer see the debris hit the rail you're on.

Eeeeeinnnnteresting.

How much of the game is featured in the demo. Probably very, very small I'd imagine (don't bite me for asking....the heavenly sword demo actually contained a decent amount... :lol )

I believe its level 1 of the game, I'm unsure about the length of the level, so its a bit hard to say. But it isn't a short demo, it just right (what all demo's should be)

jstevenson is the only one that knows for sure.

While I liked pretty much all of the demo (top-down section rocked).... Why oh why is Strafing NOT on the R2 button? Why??? Can this be changed in the final game? As a classic Ratchet player, I will never, ever use R1 to fire. Blarg!

I think the game looks and plays great. I just wish there was less aliasing. In the screenshots it looks so damn crisp, but for some reason on my TV is almost looks like the screen is "dirty".

Also, it's unfortunate that the plants and a few other objects are a bit low poly. It's excusable with everything going on though :)

But yea, I hope that the final game looks a bit more crisp.

I'venever played a R&C game so this demo was a first for me. It's good, but I don't think it's my kind of thing. I thought there'd be more platforming involved and what's there in the demo felt very basic.

I had none of that, very clean. Then again Halo 3 is pretty clean for me too.
R&C has a very clean and crisp look for me, which was quite pleasant. It has a very consistent look (which I always like), so much so that it feels like there are no graphical defects.

Screw you Insomiac and your demo now I HAVE to get this game.

My only gripes with the demo is the button configuration but I see that will be sorted.

I never played a R&C game before. I don't usually like furries for a lead character, but damn, the demo was insane. The teaser that plays from the start menu though just took it over the top. Oh. My. God.

There is aliasing, but not near you, but more to the background, I could clearly see it as well.
I didn't find the game that impressive either, both the texture and lighting seem a bit flat to me.
But it seems to be one of the better games on PS3, so I might get it.

btw I had some wieird Halo2 texture pop in om the Quarck statue, anyone else had this?

Hmmm dont get me wrong its a great looking game but it doesnt look as good as the screen shots i have seen posted on here and other forums. Also the camera is very iffy, still getting it as its one of the only big titles on the ps3 i was looking forward too, hopefully the full game looks better and the few niggles i found have been addresed.

Just for the hell of it, a bunch of things I noticed that have been changed from the Gamestop demo, in addition to the obvious framerate/screen tearing improvements:

- Collision detection is much better. The goldfish aliens don't clip through floors anymore after you've destroyed their robotic bodies, and they're not so hard to hit with the wrench anymore. The crumbling walkways used to lose collision the instant the crumbling animation started, and Ratchet would fall right through them, which was really annoying. Now you don't fall until the walkways collapse.

- The design of the robot civilians was changed. They had a gold, art deco appearance before. Now they're silver and purple. I prefered the old design, but oh well.

- The trains in the rail grinding sections seem to move faster now and are more of a threat.

- After the first jump pad, there's a big walker right in front of you now, but it jumps away a second later. Maybe you can stop it from jumping away with the Groovitron? I didn't think to try it the first time since I wasn't expecting it to be there and it moves away pretty quickly.

- Ammo for the Groovitron and morph gun (forgot its name) have been reduced.

- Some of the goldfish in the flying saucers shot poison grenades in the Gamestop demo, but they all have lasers now.

- The ammo canisters look a lot spiffier in the PSN demo.

- You can now move from the over-the-shoulder view, although it's a bit too slow for my liking.

- A bunch of voiceovers of alien intercom chatter tracking Ratchet's movements pop up throughout the level.

I'm really impressed at how much more polished the game has gotten over a few months.

Seriously, this game is probably the most gorgeous game I've seen this gen... The city just looks sooo huge, and actually feels alive with so much stuff going on in the background... The animations are incredibly smooth... Such polish from that Gamestop demo... The textures look really well now, colors are very vibrant, text is nicer, weapon menu is sharper along with the icons looking cooler, sound is better, ZERO screen tear... And it seems to run DAMNED close to 60fps ALL the time...This game is going to be serious to/have serious competition with Uncharted... These are two of the most impressive games I've played this year, Bioshock being the third... I dunno, it's going to be a hard call for GOTY, but RATCHET IS one of the 3 i'll put down for GOTY...

...And Ratchet bobs his head to the groovitron now while Clank busts a quick move too, haha... Awesome lil touch... and the backflip on the grind rails looks soo much cooler...

JStevenson, seriously, tell the guys hats off... Annndddd... How about a mp3 or something mix of all the groovitron tunes? Pretty please???? It's the weapon of the year, and the tunes are soo awesome... I actually would like to use the Disco one for my cellphone's ringtone, but I need a MP3 file to do that... :D

I'm simply amazed... Oh my god.

(sometimes, the game runs at ~50fps... will this change?)

Good for you... Sucks not to be able to enjoy an AAA title, nor probably enjoy any games if you can't enjoy this in the slightest... I'm gonna copy this text though, I'll make sure to keep it handy if I want to troll anything too since I've seen many people on other lesser forums use this method to troll before... You just sub in the name, it works so well...

Wow! 1.6GB for that? I'm not knocking it, I'm just bewildered to think what the final game will weigh in at. This game looks gorgeous. It's got the textures, you just need to get up close. Stuff like the metal textures look flat at a distance, but up-close have great detail. Yeah, this game is the shit. PEACE.

enjoyed the demo...game looks great, has a huge amount of activity, the humour is actually amusing, and best of all you can squish the enemies when you beat them up...love that touch

Ill preorder this

OH.MY.GOD

Ok where do i start O_O

Graphics..umm Wow, this is easily the best looking game i have ever seen...ever, even better than HS.

The textures are crisp, the frame rate is sex, insane amount of polys, shaders etc etc etc.THIS GAME LOOKS LIKE A FUCKING PIXAR MOVIE FFS!

the pacing is perfect and controls are super smooth! ( i wish the demo had inverted tho) everything is just perfection its hard to describe...but just WOW.

This will be my personal GOTY hands down and boy playing this makes the wait for resistance 2 even more painful.

Congrats INSOMNIAC you done it again.

The demo is great... I've been feein' for some R&C to play since I got my hands on it at the Insomniac Media Day you guys held in early August...

Kudos to the team at Insomniac!

WOW

I have the EB demo, and this still blew me away.

Way more polished

I saw NO TEARING at all.

Framerate was buttery smooth.

Was a bit more difficult then the EB demo, the wrench wasn't powered up yet.

New varying music for the Groovitron :D

ammo a bit more sparse here.

Simply amazing.

I found it the opposite, pics make the game look better than playing it. I dont know if it was because they did such a good job of the ps2 versions or r&c but i dunno it didnt wow me at all tbh.

I guess it's the lack of any sign of aliasing in the official pics. Actual game IQ doesn't look THAT clean. So looks less "OMG TOY STORY GRAPHIXXX".

Some later planets are much better looking tho. I dig the dark settings more than the bright ones. I seriously disliked the "arena" planet artistically. Hate those violet + yellow color mixes. But that's just one planet among more than a dozen.

Good plan. This game is too awesome to trust to mail-order. You need to camp out at local shops so you can get it the moment it's released.
