New Alan Wake Trailer, coming May 2010

No. If you compare it to more closed-world/corridor one-genre games, then perhaps yes. Contextually for a semi-sandbox/semi-openworld game like Alan Wake is, then they look just fine.

Where those parts at the end all real-time? :o

Especially at 3:32. Wow.

AFAIK that looks like a part of a cutscene, not real-time gameplay.

Just saw the trailer. My god did that look awesome. But enough of the night-time action stuff. I want to see some daytime exploring!

What do you mean by semi-open world?

What he means is that even if the game has a lineair structure, the core technology and environment are still open world. So if you are standing on a cliff you can see locales you are going to visit rendered real time all around. Places you are going to visit later in the game.

If there is no way to get there, why waste your resources like that?

It's hard to take people seriously who say this is the best looking game on consoles when they have to qualify the claim.

Did somebody say... "GIFS!"?

EDIT: According to Remedy you CAN explore between missions to find pages and stuff, it's just not the way to advance the story.

Best looking game on consoles?

Shit looks fantastic if I must say. Darn it I have no 360 :-(

Oh, this doesn't need qualification, judging by that new trailer, it's definitely going to be one of the best looking games out there.

Do we have the option to fight the baddies with swords? I'm no good with guns

damn it!! all these 3rd party shooters (Uncharted, Resident Evil, Alan Wake, etc) should have swords as optional weapon.

What..? Waste resources..? I don't get it. And what's with the attitude, "Hard to take people seriously"/"qualify the claim"? ..eh...where the hell does all this come from..? The game looks fantastic while not even being a one-trick pony, so why so serious?

How did the exploring work again? Can just walk/drive everywhere or are you stuck to a path?

The only thing I remember Remedy saying was that when you're not progressing the story, you can go talk to NPCs and explore the town and stuff.

Does it bug you that people may think its the best looking game on consoles? Whats your opinion on the new trailer? Instead of trying to call out people, why don't you actually talk about the game.

I think the lighting looks great. The faces look ugly. The gameplay looks fine. The driving looks bad. The story seems okay. Everything else seems par for the course. It reminds me of a better looking, better playing, but less ambitious Alone in the Dark. To be clear, I'm sure the game will be vastly superior to Alone in the Dark.

It just seems like people are trying to make the game into something it might not be.

The new trailer is very cool. I preordered the limited edition at Gamestop last week. The clerk said he thought the game looked awesome, and he said he was trying to sell people on the game since not enough people had preordered yet. I nodded and took my receipt.

I still don't like how the flashlight is this hyperfocused beam. It looks like he is holding a lightning bolt.

Everyone has his opinion, every game has it's flaw, name one and I can think up of a flaw, which will immediately prompt you to defend it.

Oh and why waste your resources?? Why not? Most lineair games feel fragmented with their level design, it doesn't feel like you are part of a single world. Even if alan wake is lineair to make the thriller story more cinematic, at least it gives you the notion that you inhabit a real enviroment, a real town where every place in that town/world exists every moment you are playing.

So if you are in the woods and your objective is to reach the light tower. Imagine you follow a llineair closed of path in which you can only see what's in front of you and not the light tower, doesn't that destroy the purpose of the objective? You might as well call the objective, follow the lineair path. However if you let the player see the light tower waaay over in the distance, you give the objective more meaning and give the player a goal to reach it also gives the player a sense of progression.

I feel the same way.
Moreso because, even with this new trailer, i still feel like i've not seen a lot of variety in the gameplay/environments - feels like i've been seeing the same stuff for year(s)

And what is that? And why is that so bad (Being excited about a game). Why does it seem like people are only allowed to be excited about Killzone, Uncharted, Heavy Rain and GT5 on this board?

Wow, would really like to see a HD version of that trailer.. Hopefully they put it online either via the console or the usual places.
Amazing stuff.

It's fine, I guess. It shows me who's opinions I should take seriously, and who's I should discount. I think the game is probably going to be excellent, I just don't get the whole "best graphics" posts.

I like these new Red dead Rdemption-like trailers with the Discovery Channel-ish explanations. Works well:)

I beg to differ, I think they look great. However, there's something slightly off in the way they animate, just like in Heavy Rain. The uncanny valley rears its ugly head again - the closer you are to photo-realism, the more jarring the tiny imperfections.

The driving looks bad.

That's interesting. How can you tell from the footage?

That's because you have. They've been purposely shying away from showing a lot of daytime footage, and I don't think we've seen the New York flashbacks yet either (unless that Harry Garret Show video is a part of the game). But this new video finally gives you a glimpse of some previously unseen locations.

That said, Alan Wake is not a globetrotting adventure. I expect something akin to Silent Hill or Silent Hill 2 (or, indeed, Twin Peaks) as far as environmental diversity goes.

That has to be live action or at least CG. We're not there yet.

I am not getting much uncanny valleys from Alan Wake, where in Heavy Rain I cringed every few seconds, could not stand the faces. The characters in Alan Wake also look more stylized I think, that helps a lot.

Insane, that can't be rendered. They went all out on the details if it is, and it's definitely a video since that can't be rendered by 360 hardware.
