I haven't played theme park since it came out (on the Amiga) but I would say that BigFest is a less complex/more strealined version of that game (no hiring of workers, desiding amount of sugar/salt or economics).
I'm on my way to work right now but if I remember correctly the currency in BF is tickets and not money.
Instead of competing with other (AI) festivals you have stars(think olliolli not shi*ty phone games) you earn from clearing objectives each mission and your festival is persistent and carries over between missions.
The moment to moment gameplay contains helping your bands with different tasks (someone lost his/her guitar right before entering the stage) maintenance and upgrading your festival based on what your visitors say. It also means that you have to take care of thieves, sick people etc. Every interaction is done by the touchscreen (tap on buildings or thought bubbles to get more information.
I'm not that far into the game (and keep in mind that I might be easy to please) so I can only speak about my time with it but this far it's been everything I wanted and more and for someone like me, that find searching for new music harder and harder for every year, the theme is a great addition to the genre.
Hey, that's awesome for your thoughts man, please keep em comnig as you play more/if they change. I probably would have impulse bought this, but Freedom Wars from plus has got me in its vice grip, so I'm going to sit back and see what people think of Bigfest. Honestly think the idea & genre is perfect for vita, and it's a vote in confidence to make it a normal game and not free to play. Slightly nervous though form the long quiet development then Sony just kind of dropping it with no fanfare. Interested in how much content is there.
