The Sixth Sense (1999)
Troll Hunter (2010)
The Birds (1963)
Misery (1990)
A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014)

I just realized that 3 movies of Top 10 have kids. Mix with them works very well on this genre.

3. The Beyond (1981, Lucio Fulci)
Fulci never got the appreciation he deserved in his lifetime, but between 1979 and 1982 he churned out a string of classics. Outside that golden period lies Don't Torture A Duckling(1972), another classic giallo and easily on par with Argento's best.

How could I forget that one.

There are probably too many honorable mentions. I'm looking through everyone's list and there are still a handful of horror movies I have to check out. Repulsion sounds good. I recently got into horror movies pre-70s so I'll make sure to check it out.

Shit I forgot about one of my all time favorites, Split Second with Rutger Hauer. Had to adjust my list and if what I'm currently watching holds up, will need to make another change.

A humble bump to see if there are any stragglers. Will leave this open for at least a few more days...maybe post results sometime next week.

8. The Thing (1982)
9. 28 Days Later (2002)
10. The Ring (2002)

My top ten is rather conventional I guess. I would have liked to include some more lesser known horror films, but these really are the cream of the crop in my eyes. It also kind of blows my mind how many of these films have remakes.

1. Halloween (1978)

2. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

3. The Thing (1982)

4. The Exorcist

5. An American Werewolf in London

6. Alien

6. 28 Days Later
7. The Descent
8. Jaws
9. Dawn of the Dead (1978)

Much like mariachi my list is fairly bog standard.. I suppose for once the classics are classics for a reason.

1) Alien

5) The Fly (1986)

I don't think Jaws counts as a horror movie.

I think Jaws can be considered a horror movie. The early stalkings/gruesome kills, then later on the cramped quarters of the boat where the shark can attack at any moment... It may not be the pure essence of horror, whatever that is, but I'd say it's at least partly horror.

Agreed.

Jaws is definitely horror. its somewhat interesting on IMDB that Jaws 1 has it's genre listed as 'Adventure, Drama, Thriller' ...while the Jaws sequels are listed as 'Horror'. Jaws 1 is the scariest of all the Jaws movies and should easily have 'horror' listed as a genre on there. strange, but whatever.

1. Jaws (1975)
2. An American Werewolf in London (1981)
3. Halloween (1978)
4. The Thing (1982)

7. [REC] (2007)
8. Shutter (2004)
9. A Tale of Two Sisters (2003)
10. Scream (1996)

The lack of Jacob's Ladder in this thread is disgusting but as long as Rosemary's Baby isn't top 5 I'll be happy.

Edited my voting to add... Witches, yes the one from Roald Dahl.

I know its considered as a kids movie, to hell with that, its more horrifying that some of the contestants here :P

8 - Switchblade Romance aka Haute Tension (2003)
9 - An American Werewolf In London (1981)
10 - The Evil Dead (1981)

I can't really pick between Alien and The Thing, so I did a Sigourney Weaver vs Kurt Russell top trumps and Sigourney won by the skin of her teeth.
The fact that Weaver is my surname in real life has nothing to do with it.

1. Evil Dead II (1987)
2. Suspiria (1977)

I couldn't pick between those two for my top spots either but mine went the opposite so were in balance :)

1. Halloween
2. Scream
3. Alien
4. The Shining
5. Martyrs
6. Dawn of the Dead (2004)
7. Scream 2
8. It Follows
9. Saw
10. Nightmare on Elm Street

HM:
Freddy vs. Jason
Jason X
A bunch of 80s slashers like My Bloody Valentine, Terror Train and so on... oh and of course The Burning and Jason Alexander's role of a life time... with hair! Sleepaway Camp!
The Cabin in the Woods
Braindead (Too long ago to list)
Scream 4
Evil Dead 2 (Too long ago to list)
A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night
The Faculty

And many more i've forgotten. Movies like Saw and REC could be swapped out probably.

My horror experience is pretty limited, and I'm only just now getting around to a lot of the essentials this month. So this list will probably look pretty different once I let some of those settle. But for now, here's what I've got:

1. Psycho (1960)

2. Alien (1979)

3. The Shining (1980)

4. Jaws (1975)

5. Ghostbusters

6. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

7. Shaun of the Dead (2004)

8. The Thing (1982)

9. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

10. American Psycho (2000)

#1 The Thing (1982)
#2 The Descent
#3 Aliens
#4 Dellamorte Dellamore (Cemetery Man)
#5 The Blair Witch Project (Scariest of the all)
#6 Suspiria
#7 Scream
#8 Day of the Dead (1985)
#9 Ginger Snaps (Katharine Isabelle is like a horror legend now)
#10 A Nightmare on Elm Street (RIP Wes Craven)

HM:
Halloween
In the Mouth of Madness (More Lovecraft Carpenter, I love it)
The Conjuring
Sinister
Kill List (One of the very best modern horror flicks)
Frailty (Bill Paxon is the man!)
Versus
Braindead
Poultreygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead (ever laughed through an entire movie)
Carrie (70's)
The Ring (remake)
The Innocents
Cabin in the Woods (next gen scream)
Let the Right One In/ Let Me In (because I think they are both equal)
From Beyond
Jason X
The Toxic Avenger
Evil Dead 2
Return of the Living Dead
An American Werewolf in London
Trick R' Treat (the best Halloween horror flick)
The Mist

I always knew my top 5, but adding 5 more was difficult. I think there's a lot of god tier horror out there. All of these movies are the best of the best for me. Also, I really love schlock, and comedy horror, but my fav. time period, ironically, is 70's horror. There's nothing like a cloudy, lazy Sunday, or rainy day, and the dark dreariness of 70's horror.

My top 10, dominated by the Master of Horror, Dario Argento:

1. Psycho (Hitchcock, 1960)

2. Suspiria (Argento, 1977)

3. Dressed to Kill (De Palma, 1980)

4. Deep Red (Argento, 1975)

5. Jaws (Spielberg, 1975)

6. Les Diaboliques (Clouzot, 1955)

7. Targets (Bogdanovich, 1968)

8. Tenebre (Argento, 1982)

9. Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key (Martino, 1972)

10. The Birds (Hitchcock, 1963)

HMs:
Blood and Black Lace (Bava, 1964)
Creature from the Black Lagoon (Arnold, 1954)
Eyes Without a Face (Franju, 1960)
The Fly (Cronenberg, 1986)
The Girl Who Knew Too Much (Bava, 1963)
Ghostwatch (Manning, 1992)
The Host (Bong, 2006)
It Follows (Mitchell, 2014)
Manhunter (Mann, 1986)
Nosferatu (Murnau, 1922)
Opera (Argento, 1987)
Phenomena (Argento, 1985)
Rosemary's Baby (Polanski, 1968)
Shaun of the Dead (Wright, 2004)
The Shining (Kubrick, 1980)

Les Diaboliques is great, just saw it earlier this year for the first time. The whole bathtub sequence is creepy as fuck.

1. The Thing (1982)
2. Alien
3. The Shining (1980)
4. Psycho (1960)
5. Jaws
6. From Dusk Till Dawn
7. The Descent
8. The Mist
9. Misery
10. Cube
