What if gaming was just: PC+1 console, and ALL multiplatform games are crossplatform?

I was thinking about a couple of things
while I was brushing my teeth just now - how much I love sleep, and how I could/would incorporate that into the massive crossover fanfiction game I've been writing mostly mentally over the span of about 5 years now called Mass Effect x Yakuza
, and it hit me; what if one day, or in another world, the gaming market as far as consoles' and PC's platform's coexistence/communities, what if it came do there being just 1 console per generation that you play games on, then you have PC - playing on PC is already the more expensive but you'd have a console with an appropriated life cycle which would be more affordable, not to mention most if not ALL games multiplatform AND cross platforn? If you ask me the gamers really win in this scenario.

And I know gaming is much more than just even consoles and PC which in and of itself is a huge part of gaming in reality, but I'm curious to know what the gaf thinks.

The biggest downside to this is that the first-parties (especially Nintendo) would reduce production of their software dramatically. Look at what happened to Sega after the DreamCast, the quantity of their output is much smaller than it used to be. And you can forget about Nintendo funding projects like the Wonderful 101 and Bayonetta 2, they wouldn't have the money or the motivation to do that.

This is pretty much the only downside, but it's large enough for me to want consoles because of how much Nintendo's output makes up the library of games I play.

Also I'd miss handhelds. Playing my Vita while laying in bed is bliss.

I think most games designed for crossplatform multiplayer end up crippling one platform in the process. When I hear a game will be crossplatform in MP I loose almost all interest in it. There's very few genres that can survive that.

Also..I wouldn't want to be a gamer in a world where majority of pcgames are multiplats designed also with consoles in mind.

There is no way to ensure cross platform play between PC and consoles. Even if Valve and the sole console manufacturer came to an agreement, you'd have somebody like EA throwing a wrench in the machinery. You're more likely to see publishers allowing cross platform play between a console, where the user has to deal with additional lame ass login system, and their own digital PC platform.

Really the only thing like this that could work is if the current console makes decided to make PCs at a set spec for a 5 year period and that spec was agreed by all.

So for example Sony and Microsoft made steam machines called gen 1 or something with the same spec for 5 years till a new one called gen 2.

Then you have console fans still having the simplicity if walking in a store and just buying a machine that will work, devs have a standard main stream spec to target for 5 years and other people can still use PCs as they have been. Also they are now like any electronics so other companies can make then to.

Basically, steam machines with a set spec. The makers would have to offer there own services on top for competition. Have there own tweaked version of steamOS with unique services etc.

However I doubt this will ever happen. Steam machines will remain confusing to people not already into PCs and console makers will want there own platforms and exclusives.
