Deadbolt - Next game from devs of Risk of Rain. Gory 2D stealth action, free alpha

You can follow its development here:

Grim reapers are commonly displayed as a hooded figure in a scythe, sending people to the afterlife. This was good back in the old days, but today, with the invention of doors with locks and guns, the grim reaper is having a hard time reaping lives. That is where you come in, as the modern day grim reaper, with modern day equipment, ready to kill modern day undead.

Deadbolt is a side-view action shooter made by the same developers of Risk of Rain. The best comparison that I have heard is a mix between Hotline Miami's twitch shooting and over-the-top gore along with Gunpoint's tactical traversing. You just run around and shoot things

The plan is that the more you play, the better arsenal of weapons you have. While you start with a fully loaded gun, the bullets are never enough to clear the whole building; therefore, you have to scavenge the weapons of other enemies, resulting in an almost puzzle-like gameplay of bouncing between different enemies to get ammo to kill the next.

Looks pretty interesting but I don't know how many of these hyperviolent games I can realistically stomach. I do love me some Hotline Miami tough.

I've played it for like... 15 minutes and it's soooo much fun.
Yeah it's really fun. Obviously feels early, but for an alpha, it's polished and enjoyable. I like the little details like how you pulls knives from the knife block. The dev has cool plans for enemies, like vampires being night club owners, each faction having special traits, and a Mordor-esque system where you take out gangs by killing different lieutenants to reach the boss and who you decide to kill affects what kind of reinforcements the boss has

I don't get these kinds of comments (no offense). These graphics (And HM's) are about as far removed from reality as it gets. To me they are totally benign. Is it really something that affects you? Genuinely curious.

Interesting, so it's basically Rorschach with guns + Gunpoint.

I like it.

Good comparison actually. Gunpoint was great :)

The extremity of violence is not contingent on realism alone. I would say that, for somebody like the poster you quoted, realism has absolutely nothing to do with it. Violence is violence however it is portrayed. Your sensitivity to it, or lack thereof, is individual.

The act of shooting another unsuspecting person and spraying their blood all over a room is violent and grotesque. Whether it is in words, images, or moving pixels. People just react to different portrayals at different intensities.

HAhah o man. That toilet kill.

Risk of Rain was surprisingly great IMO. I would love a sequel but I have faith they'll make another good game. Sucks that Risk of Rain never got proper match making.

I really hope they bring back the guy who did the OST, because wow he is talented.

I enjoyed Risk of Rain but sucked big time at it in the few hours I played. Regardless, looking forward to the devs' follow-up.

I'm surprised I didn't find out about this sooner! Risk of Rain was/is awesome, and I was anxious to see what the devs were going to do next. This definitely has my attention.

Does you brother have plans set for the music?

Risk of rain OST was amazing!

I love the OST as well :D

Somebody actually asked this on his blog so I'll post the response here:

"The idea i’ve been throwing around in my head is that each faction would have their own corresponding music associated with them (zombies = hip hop, vampires = house, you = jazz etc) but nothing has really started yet in the music front. I think music can really make (or break) a game, so I’d like to take a closer look in integrating it with the gameplay this time around."

Here's the link to his tumblr if you're interested.

Whoah, this is neat. Risk of Rain is great, and Gunpoint is among the greatest, so I'm plenty on board with what is happening here.

Does this include the guy who did the RoR OST? Because that was a fucking kickass soundtrack.

Looks sick and I love Risk of Rain, but whatever happened to the RoR PS4/Vita versions? I've been waiting so long for that!

Yeah, still want this. Haven't heard anything for a while.

How is it not finished?

Will check the alpha out later, I love Risk of Rain.

It is finished.

I play Risk of Rain a good amount with my friends and the game doesn't work online or on LAN properly. Once someone had a framerate drop (Which is bound to happen once the screen gets congested) the games desyncs causing everyone to be looking at different enemy placements making it almost impossible to cooperate.

The game has major compatibility problems with different computer hardware and didn't run a full 60 frames on my gaming laptop, or my i5 macbook air, but on my friends older macbook with lower specs run 60 frames, and on my older XP laptop the game runs a full 60 frames.

Also most importantly to me what happened to the PS4 version?

This is so my type of game. Super tight and full of style for such a small game. Reminded me a bit of Hakaiman. The zombies being drug dealers and watching TV in dives makes so much sense.

Took a classy JIF:

I'm a couple of months late, but I'd be remiss to leave your question unanswered. I played a little bit of Deadbolt soon after I made that post.

Deadbolt is benign (and a lot of fun). The world is very playful (zombie gang bangers). It's about as unsettling as a Road Runner cartoon.

If you don't see how a game, in which you bash in the head of a guy whose face gets visibly more bruised and bloody, could elicit some feelings of discomfort, then I don't know what to tell you. Hotline Miami's pixel art is sort of like mosaiced porn. You can't quite make out every little detail but your brain is more than able to fill in the blanks.
