Spoke to a Nintendo rep, cleared a few things up about amiibos

"D"

I'm extremely insecure with how much f2p mobile games are encroaching on Nintendo
So I walked into a GameStop just to kill time and I spoke to a Nintendo rep there and I asked her a few questions. Most of which we might have already known, but I thought I'd post here anyway for the GAFfers that have been living under a rock until now.

- The westcoast port strike DIRECTLY affected Nintendo shipments for amiibo definitely. She said there are STILL January and February worth of amiibos on the shipping crates that have yet to be unloaded. The amiibos we DID get (like the previous wave of King Dedede, Sonic, etc.)..had to be delivered by air which cost them lots of money, which explains the shortage of certain characters. They of course don't plan on keeping that up.

- There will be a restock on older waves of amiibos, especially for rare characters like Wii Fit Trainer, etc. She explained they only made so many cause Nintendo thought the demand wouldnt be there due to the franchises for some of the characters being obscure, but she acknowledged they received TONS of emails from people that can't find/are looking for these characters...and the are trying to do what they can to get them out there but due to the port strike, a lot of those characters are still on the ships..in which cause she said to keep checking store for some of the older characters to appear.

- Wave 4 or 5 (whichever one it is I dunno) that has Ness and Charizard, etc, are having their release dates and preorders held at due to the port strike as WELL because Nintendo wants to make sure the situation with the strike will not affect shipments again and so they can gauge the market for demand, which will determine how many to produce. She said once most the cargo gets offloaded and everything is fine with everything and the market and they talk to retailers about stock, they'll announce.

- The Majora's Mask n3DSXL is absolutely gone. It truly WAS a limited edition release and there are NO stock anywhere in ANY warehouse and there are NO plans to restock whatsoever. Funny thing is she said retailers were informed about 6 months before its release and ordered accordingly. Chalk the scarcity to the retailers..cause they ordered how much they "felt" they were gonna need.

- She didn't know anything about a release date or Nintendo Direct for the remaining MK8 or Mewtwo DLC. The Directs are kind of random and she doesn't really get any sort of heads up but she said if Nintendo wants to show gameplay of something then the Directs are the only way they'll do it.

As stated before...some or even most of this info might've been known already but i thought I'd inform everyone anyway.

Hmm, thanks for the info. I'm disappointed though not surprised to hear that the MM n3DS isn't going to be restocked. I was hoping the reason for stores getting slighted on their release date inventory was because of the port strike.

Although Nintendo reps usually don't know much that we don't, that sounds right.
I imagine amiibo will be a bit easier to find later on once they fix some stuff relating to the port strike

Edit out the vendors full name. Nothing she said was out there but you never know how much a company wants their employees to say or to tow a certain line.

Good info. Just no more retailer exclusives pls.

Guessing we'll see wave 4 for the US pushed back compared to the rest of the world (who will get it end of april).

I'm not entirely in the know with what's going on with the port strikes, its not fully settled is it?

Yeah I was kinda wondering what the need was to give both first and last name. If it's due to credibility, I don't think I (or many) will challenge this. I'd advise also on editing that out for pretty obvious reasons.

Any news about the gamecube adapter? I have trouble blaming the westcoast port strike when the damn thing is no where to be found world wide.

Edit: Guys we don't need 5 pages of people asking to edit the name out, a mod or op will remove it eventually.

Unless the rep said you could publish their name, I'd edit that out right away.

That's probably for best for her privacy, but she's a rep, and OP was talking to her as a member of the general public, she wouldn't have said anything she wouldn't be able to.

Still, yeah, I'd remove her name.

Sounds like once the port strike is ended (lol) US will get flooded with amiibos. I bet Nintendo is pissed, while they'll probably still all sell eventually it would obviously have been much better if they were available when they were supposed to.

I am relieved and pleased that Nintendo is working so hard to rectify the situation.

I am also really conflicted about these poet strikes. Because I support a union's right to strike because I value worker's rights. But this also impacts people and businesses other than the port the union is striking against.

I have feeling she was just nervously agreeing with everything you said while timidly trying to do her job.

I thought all special 3DS editions were like this. When I bought my poptart 3DS I had to line up at a best buy before it opened -- when I got in they only ordered 14 for the store, that's all they were getting, probably 10 people in line when it opened.

Just expect special edition 3DSes to be super limited.

Well, this is reassuring for amiiboGAF at least, seeing how many amiibos are still hard to obtain.

EDIT: *Never mind, deleted second part. Don't want to be banned.*

I think most stores only got 3 Majora 3DS's so it was still pretty limited even for a limited edition.

It was gamestop exclusive right? I think best buy has way more space to keep stock. They're not doing crap like this:

The Monster Hunter one was but Majora's wasn't. Not sure if Best Buy got them but I know the Targets and Walmarts around here only had two each.

Sorry about the name, but it was big as day on her name badge plus I figured she wasnt telling me any inside info anyway nor did she insist on anonymity...had she done so I would have excluded it...I mean the GS employee could have done the same thing I did. But I understand after all this is a forum so rules is rules.

Seriously LonelyGreyWolf, seriously?

Boy do I wish I saw what got edited out.

It's a secret to everybody.

Let's get back on topic :) Sorry for going off-topic, it wasn't my intention!

Her name didn't add anything though. Rule of thumb is that if a name isn't necessary for context, you can exclude it :) But yeah it's not that big of a deal; like you said it's not any inside information.

Thats one thing i forgot to ask about but judging by timing I'd say they fell victim to the port strike as well

that reissue of Amiibo would be devastating for scalpers.

good.

but the scalpers know now, wii fit trainer, marth and villager were actually the easiest to get.........we all just passed on them, i saw like 20 of marth/villager/wii fit trainer the first weekend

for the majoras mask edition, you can at least buy the battery cover, get half of the system :P

i just think it was a convenient excuse. There's not going to be a mountain of wii fit trainers or villagers that just happened to be held up for months while others got through.

They didn't know this would take off and had no idea of how to allocate production to various less popular characters. The new super mario wave already looks like lower quality due to rapidly increasing production to me. They're larger with less details to paint, plus 7 of the 8 toads I saw at target had shitty blotchy paint jobs.

I also stressed to her how difficult its been for people buying amiibo, i told her that the community would handle things better if Nintendo just went on record and simply acknowledged the shortages and had given us a plan or SOMETHING to let us know whats going on and what will be done...to which she agreed wholeheartedly.

She said Nintendo DID in fact discuss their port strike/shortage issues with retailers with the intention for them to trickle down the chain of command right to the consumer, but yeah, incompetence won out in that scenario.
