Shokugeki no Soma is a nice, wholesome cooking manga published in Weekly Shonen Jump written by Yūto Tsukuda and illustrated by Shun Saeki about a young man named Soma Yukihara who is trying to surpass his father's cooking at the restaurant they run. His father decides to leave and close the restaurant down for a few years, and Soma ends up going to the ridiculous top culinary academy in Japan with a 10% graduation rate - Totsuki Academy. There he will make friends, rivals, and make peoples clothes explode because his cooking tastes good. The usual.
And don't call it Food Wars. Food Wars is a dumb name.

CHARACTERS

usymwhX.png

Soma Yukihira - VA - Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (Kirito in Sword Art Online, Lubbock in Akame ga Kill!)

The main protagonist of our story. Loves to invent new ways of cooking due to his background in a small town Japanese style special-of-the-day type restaurant. Determined to succeed in the world of cooking despite his low class cooking style.

K462RER.png

Erina Nakiri - VA - Risa Taneda (Mirai in Kyoukai no Kanata, Ai Hibiki in Rolling Girls)

The main(?) female lead and Soma's main rival(?) Erina comes from an extremely wealthy and affluent family and has the ability people call "God's Tongue" which allows her to taste and judge food at a far higher accuracy and scale then any normal critic.
She doesn't actually do much of anything. You are being lied to both by me and the promo videos.

Rr5GdYB.png

Megumi Tadokoro - VA - Minami Takahashi (Member of AKB48, Midoriko in WIXOSS)

Probably the actual main female lead. Shy and nervous, her caring mother-like attitude will ensure that people will both love her while others shit on her for being too boring.

NWBbaIS.png

Ikumi Mito - VA - Shizuka Ishigami (Haneru in Tribe Cool Crew, Ellis in Seirei Tsukai no Blade Dance)

MadP's favorite character. The character people probably saw and went "Yep I'm going to watch this" Meat Ikumi specializes in cooking meat. Her name is Mito. That means meat. Her nickname Nikumi also means meat. Her name is Meat Meat. Debrowned but not defanged!

CHARACTERS THAT ARE IMPORTANT BUT THEY DIDN'T MAKE ANY OFFICIAL ART OF THEM FOR SOME REASON

Takumi_normal_clothes.png

Takumi Aldini - VA - Natsuki Hanae (Kaneki in Tokyo Ghoul, Inaho in Aldnoah Zero)

DTL's favorite character. That should tell you a lot. Another one of Soma's rivals, he specializing in Italian and acting tsundere to Soma.

Isshiki_Profile.png

Satoshi Isshiki - VA - Takahiro Sakurai (Uta in Tokyo Ghoul, Sasori in Naruto)

AKA Naked Apron Senpai. You can probably figure out why he is called that. DTL's second favorite character.

IMPRESSIONS

Food Porn 1

Very happy with this adaption, I expected them to slightly/somewhat tone down the foodgasems but they kept them pretty much 100% intact. If they didn't change the tentacle foodgasems I can't think of any others they would change.

Food Wars 1
CBsPAiqUAAAvCpT.png

Weakness with the OP and the ED are the songs chosen. Otherwise loved the ED, Prince of Smoke, Flavor Dictionary, Isshiki Senpai, Soma all looked so great. OP had SoTaku so I cant dislike it.

Sound effects and music and the detail to the food made it as good as the manga. Such a great adaptation. I cant wait for my favorites to arrive.

Good Soma.

Food Wars 1

They really didn't hold back on the Foodgasms.

Shokugeki no Souma 1
Foodgasms

Shokugeki no Soma 1

Foodgasms look exactly like i imagined them. Off to a great Start!

Shokugeki no Soma Episode 1:

Yea, no, no, just no, a thousand times no. time to throw this pile of fetid pasta against the wall and ask for the next course.

Shokugeki No Soma 1

It is too bad that a lot of people like Shard are going to see the
Tentacle Porn
and go "NOPE" without giving this series a fair chance. I'm not a big fan of that kind of fetish stuff either and thankfully that's really the only major one IIRC in the entire series. Were the series full of foodgasms like the one Shard freaked out about, I would have quit the series and wouldn't recommend it the way I do. The story and characters really are what excel in the show and the show is more a cooking battle shonen then a smut series.

This first episode? Perfect adaptation of the manga, it captures the tone and excitement of the manga, it's fairly well animated and the music builds the right kind of tension during the confrontation before the meal. If people can get over that first uncomfortable fetish gasm and stick with this series and the quality stays consistent this is going to be a potential AotY contender.

Soma - 01

I actually liked the OP and the ED, songs and all. The show pretty much lives up to the hype. Foodgasms were intense and the beginning of this show was way more erotic than I recall. Sound effects and the food was perfectly produced/animated. The clip after the ending theme was also hilarious. I'm looking forward to it.

It wasn't much baby!

Didn't realize it started already...gonna watch now

also is anyone doing a OT for Arsalan Senki?

It's unfortunate that a lot of people will be turned off by the fanservice early on (especially epiosde 1), because it gets toned down a lot later on (very noticably after the match with NIkumi near the end of volume 2 in the manga). The manga is fantastic, with really great character development, characters, a great underlying theme, and unpredictable and tense cooking matches. Not to mention one of the best shonen leads in years

The fanservice is definitely a constant but I think it's so over the top that it loops around to being hilarious most of the time. The metaphors and imagery used to describe the tastes of food just get ridiculous.

It remains yeah, but after volume 2 I'd argue it's toned down dramatically, and most of the foodgasms after that point really aren't even all that sexual

Best OST of the season (though we have Seraph of the End to hear).

I enjoyed this one, glad Sentai will bring us discs eventually.

ah did sentai already officially license soma? I missed that. Makes me a little sad as I was hoping funimation would get it so they could do it for their broadcast dubs and I could justify watching it twice over, but as long as sentai dubs this with not their what D team or so (what ever maid sama got) I will be happy to give them money for it.

So this going for 13 episodes or 26?
Cause then I'll try to figure out the point it will stop in the manga.

But yeah, this series is better than it has any right to be.

I also agree, "Food Wars" is the dumbest name.

I would assume 26, and I would prefer 26 over 13 because with 1cour they would probably stop before the first real long arc begins. There was a pretty obvious "Anime ends here!" part of the manga, but it's a lot of material to adapt.

Shokugeki no Soma - 01

Soon I will get my glorious goddess Megumi.

I wonder what the overall pacing will be then. I have a pretty good idea where I think they'll end based on how long they did this first episode assuming it's only 12-13.

Probably at the end of the tournament arc if they go 2-cour, and I imagine right before that otherwise.

Its basically comical fanservice Iron Chef the anime, so nobody should be surprised a tournament arc exists.

The first episode did the first chapter of the manga justice, and the rest of the chapters + the rest of Volume 1 will probably be the next episode. It was exactly how I imagined it to be, and even better in some ways. I'm so glad this got an anime series, the visuals are quite nice too.

Not sure on the OP song though, it might grow on me.

First episode was great. Everything I wanted is there. Full course is needed to do it justice, hope it gets it.

Still not much to talk about story wise. Can't wait for when it becomes full on JUMP mode!

I never thought this would be possible but its TOO over the top.

There's only like two of those completely over-the-top ones before they stop doing it because it gets old.

Good first eps!

kirito is god.

Real curious how the animation budget is for the rest of the season though.

they never confirmed anything.
I am personally hoping for 26 episodes with a finish right before
the big tournament arc
and an announcement for a second season next spring for another 26 episode season that will cover
the tournament arc
and then for us to continue to get 26 episode seasons every spring for as long as the series lasts like Major did.

13 episodes is easily enough to cover everything up to the end of the
training camp
and there isn't a whole lot of stuff between that and the
tournament arc
. I would imagine that if it ends up being 24/26 episodes long that it will cover the entire
tournament arc
and they'll just skip over some of the smaller stuff.

The
tournament arc
threw so many characters at you so quickly that I couldn't keep track of who was who half way through. I could see them making that a whole season by itself if they dragged a battle per ep lol

That being said, really liked this first ep, was a great adaptation to the beginning of the manga. Still shocked they kept the foodgasms :D

you could do it if you really wanted to rush it, but you could just as easily do it slower and take a bit more time to explain everything that is going on in detail and it would still feel good to watch.

I personally am hoping they take their time, as I want to watch soma for years to come, not burn through all of the material in 6 months and not have another season for years :/

That arc can be compressed really easily to be honest.

Don't know. Meat girl is walking service.

Manga story really isn't anything special. The selling point is the food porn and the orgasms. If you can't handle the first eps probably worth dropping.

I'd be interested in an intense cooking anime, but I'm reading these impressions about excessive fanservice (tentacle sex?), I'm looking at those female character designs (one in particular), and I'm fairly sure this just isn't for me.

It's actually a really good series, and the cooking aspect is actually pretty great. And the fanservice gets toned down a lot as it goes on. First episode is by far the worst stuff the manga had

It starts out that way in the manga too, but it really stops being about that pretty quickly.

I have a feeling Tosh (who was, and still is, a famous porn artist) was working off his previous experience. His art has gotten leaps and bounds better as he's been working on this manga, and it's actually pretty damn rare that there's a scene like that in the later chapters of the manga.

You know what you want best. The cooking aspect is good and the fan service is over the top, if that doesn't sound like your thing then you probably won't miss much by passing.

Would you agree with those above that the fanservice gets toned down as the series progresses?

Expect those ridiculous foodgasm shots everytime someone eats something. Guy or girl.

There is at least one every manga chapter. So probably 2-3 each TV eps.

From tentacles yes, it gets toned down.
I don't remember everything but most of the time the imagery and descriptions are completely outrageous.

Outrageous sure, but not always in a lewd way. I feel like starting from the end of volume 2 in the manga, the majority are no longer sexual at all.

Alright, well if that's the consensus, I'll give it a shot. Food induced fanservice might be ridiculous enough for me to handle it. I remember being put off by Space Dandy's first episode due to how it presented itself, but it soon proved that whatever fanservice it has was insignificant compared to everything else it has going for it.

There's no harm in giving something you are unsure about the 3 episode rule, at least.

Don't go expecting Space Dandy levels of quality here though, lol.
