Hey everyone!

It’s been a long time coming, and while a lot of Playism fans have guessed it was inevitable, everyone likes an official announcement: Touhou is officially coming to Playism EN (and sooner than you think)!

That’s right! With the upcoming release of Touhou 14: Double Dealing Character, we’re kicking open the floodgates and introducing Touhou to the English speaking world. This will mark the very first official release of a Touhou title in English speaking territories.

The Touhou Project, now helmed solely by creator Zun, was first started in 1995 with its first release: Highly Responsive to Prayers. After a three year absence following the release of the 5th Touhou title, Zun finally returned to Touhou, formed Team Shanghai Alice, and continued to work on the series independently.

Since then, the Touhou series has become a cult favorite among gamers around the world, has had countless games using the series’ characters, and become a veritable phenomenon in the doujin gaming scene.

We’re absolutely thrilled to be working with Team Shanghai Alice to bring Touhou to western shores, and we at Playism hope you’re as excited as we are to see Touhou finally see the light of day in the West!

I'll buy it if it comes to steam. Maybe if 14 sells well they'll bring over the other games. I can't see it not selling well if it's priced good.

What price range are we looking at? I'll dip to show my support but I haven't played Touhou past I think Mountain of Faith, and none of the spinoffs after Soku.

This can't come soon enough! Going to have to show support so that they'll hopefully do SA, as well.

Playism are truly the savior of shmups by bringing us this, Astebreed, Revolver360, and more. Big props to them!

Is this the first step for the PS3/4? Whatever happened to that project?
They're still being developed. Vita already has some Touhou themes in the JP store.

But yeah, someone asked via Twitter if they plan to do the PS4/Vita games too. But they didn't reply. So one can only hope that this will it everything goes well.

They and Degica have done great work getting STGs onto digital markets. I hope this works out well for Team Shanghai Alice, since ZUN putting his games up for sale outside Comiket is totally new, and Touhou 14 succeeding this way could set a precedent for other doujin game-makers.

It's a long time coming. If any doujin game can have success in the West, it's Touhou, and that's despite the fact that the game isn't quite at it's peak like it was 7 years ago. DDC Is nice because the gameplay systems aren't too complicated. I hope this is the start of great things to come.

Kancolle took too much of that doujin market share. Guess Zun was forced to open up to digital distribution and western release. Day 1 for everything they release.

I'm curious to see how the localisation is to be handled. Has it been confirmed how it's gonna be handled? (Whether it's just putting up the JP version on store, using one of the fan translations, or an entirely new translation by a different team).

I still remember for a (very) brief time, the fan translators were deciding between Princess Wakasagi or Wakasagihime. An official translation hopefully wouldn't change the names we're used to using too much.

Their JP site sells it for around 1500 yen, so I'm guessing it should be around USD$15.

Ehh I didn't like TH14's gameplay all that much (I really don't like using PoC for resources), buuuut I'm gonna buy to support it regardless

14 games later and the art for those Touhou characters still looks like Deviantart crap. What's up with that?

Because it's made by the same guy that programs and composes for the games as well

If it really bothers you, a few games don't use his art (those would be the fighting games but there was a spinoff danmaku game with a different artist)

I love playism so much, thank you based thetrin. <3

Once you've fallen far enough into the Touhou hell you'll start appreciate ZUN's improvements in the drawing department, I find DDC's portraits pretty charming.

Such a big news and the thread doesnt even have 2 pags.

We've got an OT, 99% of my posts on GAF are there. :P

I'll pass the thanks on to the ones who actually did the hard work. :)

How big are the chances of reaching back into the catalogue of older games? I'd love to see someone offer at least most of the mainline Touhou games in the west and would gladly pay for them on PlaySim.

I should mention I'm buying this regardless, but I hope the success funds further releases of Touhou games :)

I thought it would've never happened. I guess ZUN finally gave up. A collection of the older entries would be great, but for now I'll grab what I can.

Yeah the game should be in japanese (still downloading my copy) and it's a pity since I actually like the dialogues in DDC quite a bit but eh it's not like you need to understand what they are saying to fully enjoy the game. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That's nonsense. It even says on the site that they're hyping up the game's story. Why would you license a game and not even expend the effort to translate it? Touhou plots can be silly, but they're certainly more involved than the average shmup's. The dialogue's there for a reason.

"The story of the games are stand-alone, so you can enjoy the game without having played any of the prequels."

Well that's good.
Now I just need to learn Japanese.

I think ZUN didn't want to let someone translate Touhou without being able to supervise the process. I don't have any source on this, but it seems likely to me.

And as I already said I love the plot and dialogues in DDC, the A shot-types have hilarious dialogues and Seija is such a great character but I'm just grateful to being able to buy a Touhou game digitally without any hassle, if the game is successful in the west we can hope for the next games in the series and maybe to see them translated.

(wow look at all this bad english here I hope I wrote something comprehensible)
