I'm delighted to announce that Project CARS has now officially entered RTM (Release To Manufacture, or "Gold") status, with a street sale date of May the 7th in Europe and May the 12th in the US.

Congratulations to everybody for this achievement, and a huge thank you for your help in making it happen. Three years or so ago when this project started SMS were in a very difficult position, and without going in to the ugly details, it's only the funding and support of WMD members that allowed the team to carry on, and Project CARS to get made.

Don't underestimate the magnitude of what we've achieved together either - the game has had a comparatively tiny budget compared to most multi-platform games these days, with a much (much!) smaller dev team than most people seem to think. Clearly the addition of the WMD membership has helped massively in making it happen. The results are there for all to see, the game is already being spoken of very highly, and I'm certain will offer a lot of enjoyment to a lot of people. It's true to say we didn't quite achieve everything we wanted to, but considering the resources we've had, the end result is pretty amazing. And anyway, pCARS is very much a long term project/brand for us, so good that we have plenty to add and improve in future

Clearly the process hasn't always been a smooth one, and in the last few months especially SMS has faced massive hurdles in getting the game over the line, which has meant we've been much less involved at WMD than is ideal. In general too we've made mistakes along the way (natural in something so new, and which we can learn from) which has meant we haven't always made the most of what WMD offers, but there's no question it's been a success overall in terms of its effect on funding, game design and content, and QA.

So ... congratulations, and be very proud when you see our game on the shelves in early May

(And now, back to work - we still have the first patch to finish off, and DLC content to be worked on. Quite how some dev teams manage to take time off en masse when their game goes Gold is a mystery to me!)

Nice, these rare times when Europe gets something first. A proper WW launch would be the best though.

As someone that was there backing the development from day one and talking with the developers when the whole project started at NoGrip it feels really, really good to be so close.

They really shouldn't have promised that.

The point is that is still supposed to come later in 2015 (together with SteamOS version) and the Wii U logo is still there on all the trailers. So, if it's still scheduled, it's almost rude to start working on DLC before working on that version. I understood that the other version had priority, but this is going now into the third world type of attitude.

It's not really rude, because in most cases the DLC developers wouldn't be working on the WiiU SKU anyway and whatever bugs or additional features would then come with the WiiU version anyway.

I highlighted the DLC part, because the patch part makes sense. And I had the impression that SMS is not that big, do they really have a dedicated DLC team? Because the way the statement is worded doesn't make it sound like they have so many resources:

Edit: and besides that, he obviously cared more about mentioning the DLC than the remaining versions.

I meant that the Wii U version is mostly worked by render/engine programmers, a producer, an art lead etc. The designer, majority of the artists, the sound designer all can work on DLC without it affecting the development of the Wii U SKU at all.

The statement is worded like that because it's not an official press release, but rather something aimed at the team members. It doesn't mention the Wii U version because they can't be working on it just yet; it's just about what they are working on right now before the release.

Is this your speculation or info from SMS? Even so, he's not the head of the DLC team, he covers all the development, no?

Why? The reason for delaying the Wii U version was to focus on the other versions. Now that the other versions are ready for market, why can't they work on the Wii U just yet? Again I understand them working on patches, but even more if this is aimed at team members, the Wii U version has even lower priority than the DLC. Not only for resources, but also for communication. In the mindset.

Which I can understand for financial reasons, but not from moral point of view. It's a commitment that keeps being broken. And at this point this is really comparable to how the Watch_Dogs version was treated. I surely hope we get at list some images of the Wii U version before the 2016 release for this one.

My speculation derived from the way how others and myself work with regards to DLC. I mean how could 3D artists even work on the Wii U version when the models already scale, the materials will be the same etc.

Because there will be bugs, missed features, improvements etc. that need to be developed for the upcoming patches. I didn't mean that the period is long, but right now it would incredibly stupid to focus on something that isn't coming in months. That doesn't mean it's a different priority from DLC, it's a separate product altogether developed simultaneously. As for the reasons, the reality is that SMS does not have the necessary resources and thus it's much, much wiser to focus on something that benefits more customers and the studio themselves and off course us who have invested in the game. As for communication regarding the version, well there are reasons that can't be disclosed even to us. It's a reality when working with multiple stakeholders.

There is no good reason to release the Wii U version after the others. There's just no point unless it comes out heavily discounted in price. People will only buy the Wii U version if it comes out on the official release day. Any time after that and you're really testing people's patience - they'll just get it on the other platforms instead.

We can't know for sure, but there could very well be; we don't know what kind of deals SMS might have regarding the Wii U version, we don't have very good statistics regarding the userbase of Wii U (audience should be at lest somewhat different), we don't know what is resource investment needed for the version.

Most people with multiple platforms wouldn't opt for the Wii U version anyway, dude.

Whenever it releases it will be the best looking and playing sim racer on the platform. For the Wii U owners who care, it won't matter when it releases. More people are going to buy it on the other platforms, which is right the devs prioritize those versions.

I just watched the 14 minute clip of PS4 gameplay and at one point the commentator said "I didn't have damage on..." and I started to wonder, how much of damage to the cars take? Is it just cosmetic or more?

Like Watch_Dogs was the best looking open world?

There might be a small market, but it got smaller when the version was delayed (even if there is reasonable explanation for it) and it will be even smaller if it's treated as a third world market and it has a lower priority than DLCs and it will launch quietly when no one else will play this game anymore.

Well I've lost wheels whilst playing and with the brake disc scraping along the tarmac it takes a long time to get back to the pits!

Ah, good to hear that there's at least that (probably more I'm guessing). Thank you.

Yeah cars can get pretty beat up. To be honest I've not spent a lot of time deliberately crashing to know how extensive but you can certainly do enough damage to ruin your race (assuming you have it turned on of course, in PCars everything is customisable including damage settings).

Big congratulations to all involved, especially our small NeoGAF backer community who was with the SMS since the first months of WMD.

WMD was a kickstarter before the Kickstarter and despite 5-year long journey and numerous obstacles, it is amazing to witness a game of this scope - especially in the driving genre - to be released as an amazing finished product.

I still remember when SMS announced the project that will become the Project CARS once they were released from EA because EA was not satisfied with sales of the Shift 2 Unleashed.

In the meantime, they managed to finish the amazing Ferrari Racing Legends, game that was in the works for 7 years before actual release and that is one of my favorite racers of the past generation. I find great satisfaction to see how much resemblance the career structure of Project CARS have regarding one introduced in Ferrari Racing Legends, which was beautifully crafted structure of career design in racing games.

It will be beautiful springtime for all racing games players on consoles and PC and finally the genre is starting to heat-up properly.

It was a long wait. Congratulations to everyone.

If your rationale is that people are just going to buy it on other platforms, how is that negatively affecting the devs again?

Project Cars is not a cog in the gears of console wars, it's just one multiplat game. Whether it releases in May or December, if you only have a Wii U, it's the only game in town for that kind of experience, one of the best games on that platform if it lives up to expectations, and one of the only third party releases of the year. If people enjoying it before you spoils the idea of playing it, the problem is with you, not the game. PC and PS4 players don't seem to have any trouble buying and playing late ports of good games.

Honestly, that "third world" comment makes you sound like Phil Spencer.

No, my point is not that people will buy it on other consoles, those people were already lost with the delayed launch.

My point is that Wii U owners are barely buying even Nintendo games outside the big hits. It's a big mistake to expect the market on Wii U to behave the same as on PS4. Or to compare a late and obviously worse port (for objective reasons) with HD remakes.

Of course it matters when it releases, the further away from the launch you go, the less hype and the less people are in contact with the game. It matters also what kind of marketing will be done for the Wii U version (which I can estimate to be 0 for obvious financial reasons and as I said I wonder if we will see at list some footage of it before launch) and what will be the price (and I will be pleasantly surprised not to be a full price). Only the fans of the genre will follow the game if it's delayed too much and the there is a very big chance that those fans have already a PC or another console to satisfy their passion.

Again, a worse (for objective reasons) and late (for reasons I can understand) version that has a lower priority (something, something, Phil Spencer) than the DLCs has everything against it.

Configurable. You can also configure mechanical damage, tire wear and fuel usage.

What happened to Nürburgring? I've seen it in Project Cars videos, but it doesn't seem to be part of the locations anymore.

There's Nordschleife and there's Nürburgring. What there is not is the full wombo-combo of Nords+Nürburgring

Amen, I've been there since Day 1 too! It's a bit surreal to think that the game will be in store soon.

Why does the developer keep talking about Weapons of Mass Destruction?

WMD stands for World of Mass Developpement. It's the name they gave the website/forums where all the people who funded the game can discuss and report issues.

Guess it's only PC, because the European PS Store pre-order page only lists the 3 cars from the standard version.

I got the Limited Edition upgrade DLC pack waiting in my games library for download from PSN preorder. The discrption in the store is just missing it.
