DS Lite Game Recommendations

[MOD POWER ABUSE] Go ahead and use this thread to solicit/recommend games, as these "DS Recommendation" threads have been quite prevalent lately, what with the upcoming DS Lite and all. [/MOD POWER ABUSE]

I'm hoping to pick up a DS Lite on launch day as well, but am having trouble deciding what games to get with it. I've got a list of things I'd like to get, but I am going to limit myself to just three for now. (All your impressions of Phoenix Wright make that a must-have for me when it is released, although I haven't been observant enough to know when that is.)

Higher Priority
-New Super Mario Bros.
-Super Mario 64 DS
-Advance Wars: Dual Strike
-Brain Age
-Metroid Prime Hunters

Lower Priority
-Super Princess Peach (some of you seem to enjoy it, though you say it's too easy)
-Nintendogs (shut up, it looks entertaining in a way)
-Tetris DS

So, what three would you suggest?

So NSMB is definitely a better pick than SM64DS, even if I've never played the latter? Out of curiosity, how poorly did the controls translate given the lack of analog on DS?

SM64 DS is totally worth it. The controls aren't a problem at all, and the mini-games are fantastic. I played the hell out of that game when I first got my DS.

Yes, it's a better pick - the finest game on the system bar none. As for the controls, it hampers some of the fun, but since you've never played the original you probably won't notice the difference. That is unless you played Mario Sunshine. Pick up Mario 64 DS somewhere down the line if you can nab it cheap, but NSMB is a priority for right now.

Does anyone here actually play Nintendogs, or is something horribly wrong with me for being interested in it?
 
SM64DS works 100% fine on the D-Pad. The fact you walk by default makes it easy to position yourself, it's not like you're always running with the stick at 100%.

Jesus Christ you care too much about what people think. What about YOUR tastes?
Do you like tamagotchi type of games and dogs? If your answer is yes then buy it. And please stop caring about anything else really.

It's a good game no doubt, but you'll most likely lost interest after a month or so. Also depends how much you enjoy the genre.

I recall enjoying Monster Rancher way back on the PS1 very much, but I imagine there's no gladiatorial puppy fights, so I was kind of fishing for feedback on what made the game enjoyable to others.

The key word is "taking care". You play with your dog, learn him tricks, walks him, etc.
He can enter beauty competitions and what not.
Monster Rancher was a bit less "tamagotchi". You only did train your dude to fight there.

Advance Wars DS lasts approximately forever and is my favorite game on the system. However, I'm recommending this on the assumption that I'm not going to end up seeing you have an avatar with Sami or Rachel getting hanged or something.

Tetris DS also lasts forever, is my second favorite game on the system, and has the least connection problems with Wi-Fi.

Then go Super Mario 64 DS. Wins out against NSMB in my opinion just for reason of lasting longer, although if you have anyone to play multiplayer with, then NSMB overtakes it. And I had no problems with the D-pad control.


As for prioritizing the others, I'd go:
-New Super Mario Bros.
-Super Princess Peach - Yes, it's really fun. And if you really want it to be more challenging, don't buy the upgrades... I have no idea how I'd manage to beat the last boss without them.
-Brain Age

Haven't played MPH or Nintendogs, so I won't say.
 
I found myself interested in Nintendogs and willing to replay it a little while ago, but I keep forgetting, and it causes me to lose interest when I have to spend ten minutes getting them happy again.
 
Oh, GOD, fine, if we're going to have three of these things going at once, I might as well contribute.

My favorite DS games:

Advance Wars
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
Phoenix Wright
New Super Mario Bros.

Those are listed in no particular order.

I also like Trauma Center, Lost Magic, and Super Princess Peach quite a bit.

I'd highly recommend "Mario and Luigi: Partners in time"...

I got it for a (long) plane ride later in the month, but I can't stop playing it. It's supposed to be long, so hopefully I'm ok.
 
Well, thanks for all the suggestions. Since I was really only at all interested in the ones I mentioned initially, I think that this has helped narrow them down. (Perhaps I might get Castlevania eventually, but the last one of those I played was III on the NES).

I'm pretty sure that for now, it'll be Advance Wars DS, NSMB, and SM64DS. Advance Wars seems to be getting a nearly unanimous recommendation. I once borrowed a friend's GBA AW and loved it, but I've never been able to find a used copy anywhere unfortunately, so this will solve that problem.

I didn't realize though, that there was already a Phoenix Wright game released in the US, so I'll have to look into that as well. I think I had somehow come to the strange conclusion that everyone recommending it had somehow imported it.

The Japanese version came out first obviously, and since that had English text option loads imported.

I would recommend: Bleach DS, Phoenix Wright and Castlevania.
All masterpieces.
 
The best game in the system is Mario Kart. Everybody has kind of fogotten about this gem, but you should not miss it.

Super mario 64 is a great port of one of the best games ever and includes also some mini-games that are a lot of fun and show the "touch" gameplay very well. I am one of those rare bitches that plays this game with the touch screen analog control. Much more fun this way, though a bit difficult sometimes. With the d-pad I just can't forget about how good this game was with the analog stick on the N64. With the touch screen control I can, most of the time at least.

Castlevania is also a must, even more if you have not played anything anything after Castlevania III.

The fourth and last must-have is NSMB. I am a bit on the "it is short and too easy" camp, but the game is still very good.

The rest is optional, though Animal Crossing, Phoenix Wright, Kirby, Mario&Luigi and Metroid Prime Hunters are almost in the same league.
 
Argh, the waiting just got all the more frustrating. I just saw a case of DS Lites being carted to the back in a local store, but no luck convincing them to sell me one, due to the big orange sticker stating the 6/11 street date.

Are the Mario & Luigi game really that good? It's the only game that I don't have on that list. I like the Paper Mario games, but I never played the M&L games. I'd get the GBA one before I get the DS one.

Yea, it's tough for me too. I was walking through the mall today and the NSMB ad kept coming on some weird television billboard thingys around the mall. The old-school music playing over and over. I was flipping out. I need a DS Lite now. I need NSMB.

The GBA one is way better anyway.

I mean, Mario and Luigi 2 feels more "Mario-ish" and its Bros. Items are one of the coolest ideas in any RPG ever, if for no other reason than that in most RPGs items are completely irrelevant... but M&L2 is extraordinarily linear and has no world map, just a small hub.

Anyway... yeah. I could call M&L:SS a must-have. M&L:PiT, not so much. Maybe after it hits $20 like its GBA partner. Either way, I say if you like Paper Mario there's at least a reduced chance that you wouldn't like M&L. Paper Mario has a deeper and more complex battle system due to the badges, but M&L has better exploration elements--at least, the first one.
 
My top 3 are New Super Mario Bros., Mario Kart DS and Resident Evil Deadly Silence, although that last one obviously is just the RE fan in me.

Here are my favorites:

1. Mario & Luigi
2. NSMB
3. Animal Crossing

Tried but didn't like: Phoenix Wright, Age of Empires.

NSMB really is too short.

Mario & Luigi gives you about 20 hours playtime, probably my favorite game. It doesn't use the stylus, I like that.
 
One question, should I pick and play the Castlevania GBA Double Pack before I pick up Dawn of Sorrow for DS? I got up to Dracula in Circle of the Moon, but then I lost it. I don't know how the fuck that happened.
 
Top three:

1. Advance Wars: Dual Strike - the only possible reason to not get this, much like with Castlevania, is that the sequel will probably be even better. Only strategy game series I like.
2. Tetris DS - best online experience on the system.
3. Meteos - best use of the stylus--and unlike Kirby, which had the second best use, this game actually has replayability.
 
My "if you like", "you'll love" suggestions:

NSMB: if you like 2D marioplatformers, you'll love this one. Quality is between mario 3 (best) and mario world

Phoenix Wright: if you like (text) adventures, investigating etc, you'll love this one.

Tetris DS: If you like tetris, you'll love this one

Age Of Empire & Advance Wars : DS: If you like strategy games, both are must-haves.

Mario Kart DS: It's mario kart, it's online, and it's great

Out of category: Brain Training & animal crossing both deserve to get the sales and hype they are getting, great games that can easily capture you and make you come back day after day.

Also for puzzle games: meteos is a nice alternate for tetris. It looks a bit the same, but plays totally different. Not everybody will like it though.

For Castlevania: Personally I wouldn't buy the GBA versions first, because if you play them all one after another you might get burned out on the genre.
