Windows Phones turn into PC with Windows 10 Continuum

During its Build 2015 keynote today, Microsoft announced that Continuum will be built into Windows 10 for phones, allowing users with "select premium phones" to connect their phone to a keyboard, mouse, and external screen for a desktop-like experience.

When users connect their phone to an external monitor via HDMI, along with a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, they'll essentially be working from a desktop environment. The UI will adapt to fit the larger display, start-menu and all. As far as apps are concerned, it looks like this is where the universal model is going to pay off. During the demo, Microsoft showed off Office running from a phone on an external screen, and it looked very much like the PC app.

Overall, this looks like an amazing use of Continuum, showing off the universality of Windows 10 across devices. Given the right equipment, you're basically carrying a PC in your pocket at all times. It is important to note, however, that Continuum for phones will be limited to "select premium phones." So it's unlikely to come to low-end Lumia devices.

You will need a new device, but essentially you can plug your Phone into a monitor or your PC and it mirrors the desktop version of all of your apps which you can use on the PC with a mouse and keyboard. You could also just use the phone as a Bluetooth Mouse/Keyboard

That part was killer. Now we need to see the hardware dammit.

So will they actually be x86 phones? (like those x86 tablets that are promising)
If not they still can't run x86 progs and they're hardly a pc in any meaningful way.

Incredible stuff. They double down on the whole productivity thing. Today was the first time I got hyped for windows 10 a little. They have the right ideas!

Having to carry around an HDMI cable seems like it'd be a semi-hassle though? Unless there are HDMI cables around the monitors people would be hooking up to?

Still, a pretty neat idea and it's getting to that "powerful PC in your hand" future people wanted ages ago. Once you're able to run Civ 5 or more newer games from a phone with a good battery life... oof.

I think a lot of people could get by on something like this. My sister does not even turn on her PC unless she has something to type up.

USB-C?

Well they did say "select premium phones". I think this is the real deal.
Hoping anyway.

For charging? I could probably see that.

.

So wait. I can play league of legends on my phone? Sweet, my team is gonna hate me.
no
we don't know what it can and cannot run. for all we know its could be even a worse version of windows RT. thats no reason to be pessimistic. but just keep expectations in check and don't get too hyped =P

I've wanted this since my first phone with a built in keyboard.. I think it was the NV by Verizon.

Anyway, I'm with Apple but not under any contract. looks like I'll be jumping ship to Microsoft.

I'm not a fanboy so idc what product I use as long as it's awesome

All phones should be x86 in the future, it's the only way to get compatibility with desktops and laptops.
It's the only real way to have a pc in your pocket.

Software ports are not interesting, they're just inconvenient.

If samsung and apple and the others could've gotten their hands on the x86 patents (they can't because only intel and amd have access to them) then they would've never had to reinvent the wheel and start over from scratch software wise with this ios/android shit to begin with.
Instead what we know as android phones would just be running some form of google made linux build instead, and for apple phone users the shit on their laptops and macs would also run on their phones.

If ms aren't retarded they'll figure out that their way into the phone market will be x86 phones that run the same software (not ports, the same executables, and all of it,not just MS shit but third party stuff too) that people are already using on their laptops and desktops.
And once the hardware and battery is up for it the phone will be an actual desktop/laptop replacement for non power users/gamers.

And then people will carry their computer, hard drive and data with them in their pocket (phone) or as wearable technology ;and instead of having laptops/desktops/htpcs you'll just have dumb displays in the house (and in coffee shops and cafes and libraries and whereever) to fill whatever specific need you have at the moment (big living room display for video content, office room medium display+ k/m for productivity and work, bedroom display for entertainment etc)

Google will either have to do the same (or somehow make android replace windows and linux on laptops and desktops (and that is not going to happen for many different reasons)

I wish a court with some foresight would have forced intel to license their x86 patents to all these phone manufacturers back in 2008 or 2010 or so. Things would be a lot less backwards today.

Ah, right. Forgot about that. Thing is: Monitors would need USB-C for the HDMI standard, yeah? That'd still be a slow roll-out when there's available HDMI ports right now in the wild. Unless there's some USB-C to HDMI cross-over?

He said only universal apps will work with this. Don't expect x86 apps to work with this.

Remember that the universal apps they showed running on the phone appeared to be literally the same full-featured apps running on the Desktop.

Meaning that the "mobile" versions of Word / Excel / PowerPoint / Outlook that ship with Windows Phone 10 are truly universal apps that can become the full-fledged full-featured versions shipping on the Desktop.

Yeah definitely. But was just saying not just anything that works on a desktop will work on a phone. Needs to be a universal app downloadable from the store from the phone. It is a fantastic feature to have on a phone.

I feel like a time is coming when we won't even need PCs. Our phone will literally be the hub for our electronic existence.

Hell, they already fit full featured PCs inside a memory stick....why not do a phone?

Might get a WP when I get bored of Android.

WPs don't seem to be too expensive for what you're getting. Just need to see a little bit more.

Would be great to hear SOMETHING on when new flagship phones are coming.

My 925 is getting a little long in the tooth and I might jump ship if a replacement isn't announced soon.

Wouldn't this be rather called Windows 10 lite since it only can run the universal apps on the App Store and not 99% of the rest of the apps for windows?

I hope everyone doesn't get their expectations up about how powerful of a desktop experience this will be.

I don't think anyone would go far, but there's no reason a supported phone couldn't act as a Chromebook-equivalent.

Couldn't this be huge in cheaper/emerging markets?

Was thinking of getting the 930, so I hope that classes as premium. Else I will wait to see if they announce a new flagship phone down the line.

Combined with Microsoft stating that devs can compile iOS, Win32, .Net, and Android apps into Win10 universal apps it's pretty damn compelling. Pretty desperate but still really compelling.

Might as well try something drastic if the rest of the industry stays pretty flat.

Since the fist iPhone I dreamed of a phone that works like that.

When you are home,. You plug it into a dock which is connected to a monitor and suddenly you have a desktop pc. When you are finished just take it with you again.

Would be perfect for office use/university. I have already everything I need for my studies on my iPhone.

Belfiore mentions Qualcomm and qualifies the PC experience with "almost" in the video. If compatibility and a desire for a PC in your pocket were legitimate problems for entry, then Apple, Samsung, Android, ARM, and so on would not be where they are today. The main company that seems to have a problem starting over is Microsoft. Unfortunately, they had to lose share and adapt.
