Mario Maker's online interactions detailed (Treehouse Live)

I thought this was big enough that it should have its own topic. Treehouse went over some details on how Mario Maker's online functionality would work (sharing levels, finding levels, etc.)

Note: I haven't been able to watch the whole thing (it's pretty long), so it's possible I've missed stuff past the 1st 20-30 mins or so. Let me know if there's anything that I missed and potentially a link to the time in the video. Thanks!

[*] Can see how many people have played each of your courses.
[*] Nice pictures showing an overview of the course.
[*] Can name your course whatever you want (Nintendo will have fun with this one)

[*] Star Ranking - essentially courses ranked by popularity, give stars to what you've played depending on how much you liked it
[*] Featured - levels picked by Nintendo to be featured
[*] Up & Coming - things that haven't been ranked, or just came out

[*] Can filter by difficulty (easy, normal, expert), by time period or by location
[*] Difficulty determined dynamically by how many people completed the course

[*]Can see clear rate (both percentage & # of attempts and # of completions
[*] Can leave comments on level at any time (while playing or after completing it)

[*] Shows you where other people have died once you die

[*] Example of in-course comment - Can be toggled on and off
[*] Can also have comments just display on the TV (and not the GamePad) so that your friends can see the comments, but you possibly won't

    [*] Seems like there's a search option
  • Note (thanks Zyphersan) - you are not allowed to upload a course until you've beaten it yourself

All my levels will be five stars and show Nintendo how great Mario could be so they'll hire me as a level design consultant and totes make the greatest Mario game of all time

It should be noted that you are not allowed to upload a course until you've beaten it yourself

Expected. Chu Chu Rocket had the same process back in the day. I know people like the idea of making a completely impossible course and then somehow 1 person in a million has the skill to beat it but that just isn't reasonable.

It is a little limiting that I can only make courses that I have the skill to beat. I suck at 2D Mario.

Being able to follow specific creators is good. It would have been really hard to sort through all of the pixel art and Kaizo wannabe levels otherwise.

That's cool. It'd be nice if you could attach comments Souls-style to specific areas of the level, to leave tips for other players. Even cooler would be if you could scrub through a preview of the whole level and have comments pop up as you do, a la SoundCloud.

On the other hand it's possible that someone could be a great designer but terrible player. But I guess it's proBably worth the trade off.
I don't think that's possible. You can't design a course well unless you've mastered the controls and understand the game.

The world championship levels better be there day one. Single-handedly turned this game into a purchase for me.

The NWC levels are already some sample courses including the NWC ones in the Treehouse segment just sitting in the list.

Looks great. This is exactly what Mario Maker needed, a really solid, easy to use online sharing feature. Could be game of the forever right here!

100% meta score incoming. :P

You can?

Am I the only one that's upset that there's overview pictures of the entire stage? A preview image of the beginning might be nice, but how are you supposed to have surprise/discovery in your level layout?

I loved that the players had to go in blind to the championship levels...but would hate it if I had to have people download levels for me in order to do so.

Are the in-game level comments made by creators or other players?

If they can be left by the creator, I could see people making cool story-based levels with those. That's gonna be super neat.

Noticed that each level is tagged with which SMB graphics its using. Was I mistaken in thinking that the graphics sets are swappable according to player preference? Or locked down based on designer choice? I'd prefer the later and would prefer even more if each game came with its physics 100% intact but that seems unlikely at this point.
