Executive Editor and EIC of Gawker resigning - too ethical for this hateful world

New news, new thread?

Tommy Craggs, the executive editor of Gawker Media, and Max Read, the editor-in-chief of Gawker.com, are resigning from the company. In letters sent today, Craggs and Read informed staff members that the managing partnership’s vote to remove a controversial post about the CFO of Condé Nast—a unprecedented act endorsed by zero editorial employees—represented an indefensible breach of the notoriously strong firewall between Gawker’s business interests and the independence of its editorial staff. Under those conditions, Craggs and Read wrote, they could not possibly guarantee Gawker’s editorial integrity.

The article, about the Condé Nast CFO’s futile effort to secure a remote assignation with a pricey escort, had become radioactive. Advertisers such as Discover and BFGoodrich were either putting holds on their campaigns or pulling out entirely.
Respect. Love my discover card.

Oh my god from the title I thought they'd be resigning as an apology for running the story. They're actually resigning in protest at it being pulled?

What a bunch of chucklefucks.

They're pissed that they didn't have total freedom to sling shit like they thought.

Two down, now just shut the whole thing down.

Good job Gawker editors publishing a story that probably ruined a guys life and turning it around and making themselves the victims.

Just take the L and move on

The level of unprofessionalism on display from the editorial guy in that text message thread is staggering. These people are children.

what are the actual job prospects for these guys? I'd hope this would shame them out of the industry, though I'm sure smut mags and tabloids would be willing to take them.

lol so not one person on the editorial staff thought they should take down the story?

I gather that was a kind of "we have to present a unified front" type thing. I'm sure a few editors thought it was scummy, but once it went up, they needed to speak with one voice because now it's out there, and now it's a matter of edit vs. ownership (in their perception).

What a surprise: a Deadspin alum (Tommy Craggs) is front-and-center in this shitshow.

Deadspin is utter shit. It's "Ira and the Douche" shock jock radio levels of dickbaggery and stupidity but with the pretentious multipliers that they're 1) different, 2) better, and 3) can therefore devote time to ridiculing those they're better than. That they're less shit than Gawker on-the-whole doesn't mean much.

To hell with them.

It's just amazing how self absorbed and utterly self serving Gawker's editorial is coming across as. Even Denton is almost made sympathetic when reading that article.

It is, but the unified front that they're pushing is ridiculous and earning everyone of them deserved scorn.

It really is.

The original dead spin was amazing when the actually talented Will Leitch was involved. After he left it become were holier than though even though were basically a celeb tabloid for athletes.

What actual good would it do? Appease advertisers? The info is already out there and is still out there even though the store is "down".

It would at least acknowledge that they know it was a mistake. It's like arguing I should be able to host an illegal file because the file is already out there on the internet.

Let's predict to see how long it will take for Jason to coming in here to defend their decision.

you gotta put in certain keywords for him to appear and defend whatever ethically shitty thing gawker is doing.

hmm let's see:

kotaku sucks
gawker media is trash

those two should be a good enough signal

What other tabloid would be fine with blackmail anyway? Gawker editors look like an amateur hour parade. This isn't Lois Lane vs Lex Luthor, it's a lack of awareness and ethics 101

Yea it's ridiculous. I suppose that's the price you pay for unions...

My guess is that Tommy Craggs will join Bill Simmons for some website project

Gawker needs to be shut down.

This is really the heart of the matter, isn't it? 99% of the people acting self righteous about this issue don't actually care about it -- they already hate Gawker and finally have a cause to rally around and look morally superior in the process.

Gawker's not going anywhere.

These people really live in their own little world, I can't believe they can't see what they were doing is wrong.

I don't know if it's their ego, or a fucked up sense of morality, but it really is fascinating.

I don't think Simmons after successfully launching grantland on the backs of amazing editors and actual journalistic pieces would be dumb enough to undo all that good will and hang around Craggs.
