She shows that homosexual contact has been a regular feature of heterosexual life ever since the concepts of homo- and heterosexuality were first created — not just in prisons and frat houses and the military, but in biker gangs and even conservative suburban neighborhoods. Given how prevalent this behavior is in so many different sorts of settings, Ward suggest it’s time to stop explaining it away — and argues that society’s conception of male heterosexuality is an unrealistic, expedient one.

Pretty interesting interview with academic Jane Ward about her book Not Gay: Sex Between Straight White Men.

I've never known any straight men who had sex with other men. I think the author is either deeply confused, or has a book she wants to sell

Didn't Kinsey explain this decades ago? There's really no such thing as completely straight or completely gay. Or if there is, it's rare.

It just like those gay-for-pay pornstars. Straight men go and fuck each other, then turn around and say "I'm not gay at all".

You can tell who the "fake" straight guys are. But theres definitely some straight guys in gay porn. It apparently pays more.

I have a hard time believing this. In my country I've seen a lot of gays claim to do this. Maybe they are straight, I don't know. I know I couldn't have sex with a woman.

I don't understand how we can live in a society where it is so easily accepted that women can fool around with each other without compromising their sexuality, but if a straight man takes a booty beat-down from a glorious 9 inch he must be gay...

I've heard there's this thing... It's called being Bisexual and supposedly people can be attracted to both genders.... it's just a rumor tho don't @ me

Dear Straight Men, Come Out Already

Here's another article centered around the mentioned book. I prefer it because it has the term "bro-job" included.

I was discussing this article with some friends last night, and it's definitely something else. This passage, in particular:

Everyone should go through this process of self-identification. Think about what you prefer. Why do you prefer it? Are you OK with that? If the answer is yes, keep going. Keep questioning it. Keep rethinking what it is that you like and how it changes. And if and when you're ready to tell the world, do it, unabashed and unashamed.

I'm in disbelief about the notion that one cannot be settled in one's heterosexuality seems very problematic to me. The author calls on the reader to problematize their sexual orientation, effectively saying, "if you think you're straight, suck a cock. If you don't like it, suck another cock. Suck cocks until you like doing it."

Yes, precisely. Ward is arguing that men's sexuality is not any different than women's and is looking to do away with this perception. She also considers this notion to be sexist, insofar as it perpetuates the desire for women always being sexually available.

When straight women hook up with other straight women, no real explanation is required; when straight men hook up with other straight men, it’s a different story.

A-yep.

It's funny, "straight but experimented in college" is definitely a thing with women, but with men... they refuse to see anything like that. Bisexuality is way too broad to just completely hand-wave away with, "Nah that means you're gay, bro."

No explanation is required, but the explanation is they're experimenting with bisexuality.

Why are people so afraid of the label bisexual?

Hannibal is pretty much about this, let's be honest

If they have sex with men, they're not straight... they're Bi

Here's what the author says:

First, I want to say that I’m not in any way interested in calling these men bi or gay. These are men who — these are just average straight dudes like all average straight dudes who either in adolescence or at boarding school or in the military or in a fraternity or in any of these contexts have these experiences and it’s just part of their heterosexual past. And they go on to date women, marry women, so in no way do I think it’s productive to call this bisexuality, which I understand as its own significant and important queer identification in its own right, and that’s not what I’m describing.

Personally I could not figure out what the distinction she was making was, aside from self-identification.

Bullshit, sexual orientation is about attraction, not action.

Let's say someone gets raped, does them being raped change their sexual orientation at all? If you think it does, that's fucked up.

That is not what this article is about. It even excludes locations like prisons or the military. It's specifically about consensual encounters that cannot be attributed to environmental necessity.

As a straight man, I never had sex with another man. And as far as I know, no one of my straight friends had any experience like that.
