SOMA PC performance thread | Hopefully not as scary as the game

Someone wanted one in the OT, so I figured I'd make it.

Head here to get your latest Nvidia drivers.
Head here to get your latest AMD drivers.

Keep in mind, there are no Game-Ready drivers for SOMA from either company.

JaseC has kindly provided images of the settings menus here!

Reserving this for benchmarks, menus, etc as soon as I can throw them up!

I just ordered a Gigabyte R9 390 8gb GDDR5 (lol cerny) and an Acer 1440p IPS monitor. Cannot wait till Friday to rip into this game.

Reposting it here from the OT. Thanks!

Has anyone been able to downsample with DSR or otherwise? I can't get it to scale properly for some reason. Tried various scaling settings in NVCP and disabling/enabling "DIsable display scaling on high DPI settings" but no luck as of yet. The only in-game AA is FXAA and that's just not going to cut it unfortunately.

Thank you very much! Lets see what you need to get a good 60fps on this one. Hopefully my laptop will be able to do it. (960m)

DSR is working fine for me.

I'm on Windows 10 64-bit, Titan X w/ latest drivers, HDMI connection, and I can't get DSR to work. Not the first time it happens with an OpenGL game to be honest. The issue I'm seeing is related to fullscreen not being "true fullscreen."

Strange. I've the same configuration as you albeit with a 980 instead of a Titan X and didn't have to do any fiddling -- I selected 1.5x, 1.78x and 2x and all three work fine in-game (I generally can't stand FXAA).

That's good to know. I'll keep trying different things until I conquer this thing. Thanks, JaseC! :-)

EDIT: Manually editing the CFG file under "C:\Users\user\Documents\My Games\Soma\Main" with the desired resolution might work for some.

Anyone found a way to uncap the fps past 60? I have vsync off and the hz set to 144 but it's still only 60fps.

Edit: nvm set vsync to adaptive and it worted it out

Mmmh...
- disabling V-Sync caps the frame-rate at 60 FPS while having 120Hz as refresh rate
- borderless window is stuttery
- no DSR, no ShadowPlay

[GTX 970, 355.82 drivers]

780
2600k
8gb ram
windows 8.1
Installed on my SSD.

I get some very strange slow downs randomly, I'll be pulling 60 fps just fine, then look one way (even if it's at a wall or something) and can drop a lot of fps.

I figured the game would be fine, since it's mostly closed interiors and I've been playing MGSV on max settings with 0 issues at a rock solid 60 fps.

I got a crash with this window result

Twice in the same spot.

VJ5y8dg.png

After
train crashes.. going up the ladder, and shutting down the valve door to load the next area.
Crashed twice.

Running an i7 + 970 and 16gigs of ram
Running on Win10

You can find the configuration file under Documents/My Games/Soma/Main/steamid_user_settings. Edit Engine LimitFPS="true" to false to fix the 60 fps cap when not using in-game Vsync.

Before I did this I was also having problem (injecting) getting 1/2 refresh Vsync to work through Nvidia Inspector, but after doing so, and swapping to Borderless and back to Fullscreen seems to have fixed it. At least it did for me.

Edit: DO NOT REMOVE THE ENGINE FPS LIMIT. It appears to cause terrible stuttering.

i7 4790k
R9 290

Running very well for me, max settings, maybe a few hitches every now and then but mostly all good

Seems like no solution so far except rolling back to an older save.

Anyone getting some weird random slowdowns? It's like for 3 seconds or so it drops down to very low FPS and GPU use.
I'm not getting slowdowns but there's a ton of stuttering from time to time. It'll say it's running at 120 FPS but it clearly doesn't feel like it.

Heavily fluctuating 30-60 fps, stuttering and tearing despite having vsync on. I have 2x 7950 - same problems with crossfire on or off.

i5 2500k
7950
8gb ram
ssd

get random drops to 30-40fps. Usually from an odd light source. For instance in the first room of the game, I hit the bathroom light and framerate dropped to 30. Settings are basically maxed out except 2nd from the highest shadows.

It's pretty rough in quite a few spots for me when it comes to framerate. Maybe it's vsync related, forgot to check honestly.

Whatever you do, DO NOT USE IN GAME V-SYNC.

Seriously, enable it via control panel. I was getting HUGE dips and stuttering all the time, and enabling triple-buffering and nVidia v-sync fixed it for me. There will still be stuttering when it loads a new level, like in an airlock, but it's really not a big deal. The v-sync issue is what caused the big drops when turning around quickly.

A 2.4ghz FX as the recommended? Wow that's some low specs, I have a 3.5ghz FX6300 and it's doing fine with most new games so that's cool

So it's like Alien Isolation then? Vsync on, drops down to 30ish, off; 80-120 FPS :lol

Done. had to reload a previous file. but here is the thing. i guess i was too smart for the game
first time around i picked the omnitool, went and crashed. this time i forgot about it. went back and saw this weird black shadow watching. so i guess that was supposed to happen or it will crash?

anyways. back into the game.

DSR seems to work if you disable DPI scalling in the game's EXE. At least it seems like fullscreen right now regardless of my resolution of choice.

How do i disable Vsync from in-game and enable it elsewhere? AMD GPU here.

Alright I figured it out.

turn off vsync in game, go to catalyst control panel ( I just rightclicked the thing in my taskbar by the clock) . Make sure OpenGL settings are set to "triple buffering". and this may or may not make a difference but make sure Wait for Vertical Sync is set to "Always On".

No tearing, no framerate drops (fingers crossed) after about 30minutes of play.

I really don't understand why more devs don't have triple buffered vsync. This dev claims adaptive vsync is better (which it likely is) but for me it makes my game drop to 45fps, where as with triple buffered vsync through CCC is a locked 60. No noticeable input lag for me either.

Gonna try this later....cheers!

Anyone get stuck in hurt mode? Not sure if a PC specific bug or general game bug. Kinda annoying limping and dealing with blurred vision 5 minutes after escaping danger.

Until you find one of those things you put your hand in it's like that I'm pretty sure. I turned off the chromatic aberration cuz I couldn't stand it. Can't remember what it's called in game.

I thought that was intended? I have to put my hand in the WAU to get my vision corrected. When I do that after getting hurt instant back to normal.

BTW I have a few random stutters when it saves but nothing more. Stable 1080p 60 within vsync and max settings.
GTX 980, i74790k, 16GB RAM, Win 8. Still on Witcher 3 driver.

Oh, ok, I guess I've just never been hurt in an area without one for so long I didn't think it was intended. Kind of tedious if there's none around for a while.

I've just been sticking my hand in them just because really. Didn't think I should save them.

Oh and there's also apparently a patch live now.
