Inspired by the 31 Days of Horror Movie Marathon thread, it's time to see what GAF's favorite horror movies are.

Rules:

- List a minimum of five and maximum of ten choices for your top horror movies of all time.
- Rank your movies with numbers in order starting with your top choice (lists without numbering won't be counted).

* 10 points go to your #1 choice, 9 points to #2, etc.
* You can add some comments with each entry if you'd like, but if you do that bold each movie title or otherwise make your rankings easily discernible (like this or this).
* Feel free to include honorable mentions or rankings beyond the top 10 (these don't count toward voting), but again make sure your top 10 stands out clearly (like this or this).

- Specify years of release when possible - there are plenty of remakes in the horror genre that have the same title as the original. Adding the year clarifies the movie for which you intend to vote (e.g. "Dawn of the Dead" could mean the 1978 original or 2004 remake).

- Make only one top ten list. You can edit your list as long as voting is still open.
- Voting will stay open for about at least a week...probably longer (2+ weeks). I'll bump the thread with a warning a day or two in advance depending on when the rate of new ballots slows down significantly.
- After compiling the results I'll make a new thread.

Also, please be respectful of other people's rankings or Freddy's going to come after you on his skateboard.

2) Shaun of the Dead
3) Trick 'r Treat
4) Tucker & Dale vs. Evil
5) Gremlins 2
6) Scream
7) From Dusk Till Dawn

I might come back and edit if I think of some more, but that's unlikely. I'm not really a big horror guy. As you might be able to tell by my list, I enjoy horror/comedy more than pure horror.

1) The Exorcist
2) Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
3) Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
4) Halloween (1978)
5) Alien (1979)
6) The Thing (1982)
7) The Evil Dead (1981)
8) Night of the Living Dead (1968)
9) Ju-Oh (2000)
10) The Shining (1980)

My list is pretty heavily weighted towards newer horror as opposed to the old classics (No "The Haunting," no "Night of the Living Dead," and no Japanese horror (which is a bit of a blind spot with me I know I need to rectify)

I've seen some Argento, but it doesn't work on me all that well (although Suspiria almost made the list) Not the biggest fan of Fulci, though.

Sorta surprised that of all the directors to get two movies on my list, it's not Craven, or Carpenter, or Romero... it's Hooper.

I've seen The Haunting but it's been a while, which is actually why I'm holding off on the second half of my list as I rewatch that along with The Conjuring and some others. I honestly don't care much for Japanese horror, some are good but it's not really up my alley.

Heh, true. I turn 38 in a couple months. I guess I meant that I was kinda neglecting some classic horror stuff from before the 70s. And even during the 70s. I have NO Hammer horror on my list, either.

Edit: I decided to remove Silence of the Lambs, mainly because the movie is in a category of it's own :P

1) Nosferatu (1922)
2) Alien
3) The exorcist
4) Hellraiser
5) A nightmare on Elm Street
6) The Omen
7) The Ring (american version)
8) The Blair Witch Project
9) The Shining
10) Witches ( probably considered a "kids" movie, HELL NO, it's a horror movie in my eyes :P)

Honorable mentions:

Creepshow. I loved this one as a kid. (and I mean I was terrified about it, it seems so silly now :P)

Return of the living dead. Again very silly, but completely horrified me as a kid.

The orphanage. Fantastic ghost movie.

Night of the living dead (90s remake). Great remake, probably hated by purists, I have yet to see the original which I will for sure.

Cube.. Scifi horror, it was pretty great.

I'll probably add more later.

Edit: I can't believe I forgot Alien and Nosferatu... this list is going to be hard.

edit2: Added more change some :P

1. The Shining
2. Dawn of the Dead
3. The Cabin in the Woods
4. The Evil Dead (1981)
5. Nosferatu
6. The Silence of the Lambs
7. 28 Days Later
8. Noroi
9. Re-Animator
10. Hellraiser

1. Repulsion (1965)

2. Vampyr (1932)

3. Nosferatu (1922)

4. Eraserhead (1977)

5. Eyes Without a Face (1960)

6. Possession (1981)

7. Kwaidan (1964)

8. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)

9. Alien (1979)

10. Let the Right One In (2008)

And ten honorable mentions, not really in any particular order:

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)
Suspiria (1977)
The Thing (1982)
Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (1970)
The Innocents (1961)
Rosemary's Baby (1968)
House (1977)
Cat People (1942)
The Evil Dead (1981)
Shaun of the Dead (2004)

That was extremely difficult and I may very well change it a few times. I didn't include Mulholland Dr. (2001) or The Fall of the House of Usher (1928) because I wouldn't quite call them pure horror, otherwise they'd probably at least be honorable mentions if not in the top 10.

I'm looking forward to seeing the results. I have a feeling Halloween will come out on top, but I can't hate on that too much.

Edit: Guess I'll add some screens because all of these movies are nice to look at.

1. Repulsion (1965)
2. Vampyr (1932)
3. Nosferatu (1922)
4. Eraserhead (1977)
5. Kwaidan (1964)
6. Eyes Without a Face (1960)
7. Possession (1981)
8. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
9. Alien (1979)
10. Let the Right One In (2008)

A+ list. I very strongly considered putting Repulsion as my number 1, since it is the scariest movie I've ever seen (and you'd think would count the most in something like this) but I had to go with my gut and a combination of other nebulous factors.

I knew it was comin...

Had to be that guy.

Also your gif list made me swap Halloween and TCM's spots on my own. Texas Chainsaw is just so god damn gritty and "real". Halloween is really fun and frequently has chilling imagery, but TCM just makes me feel all squirmy and dirty inside, which I have to give props to.

01 Halloween (1978)
02 John Carpenter's The Thing (1982)
03 It Follows (2015)
04 Alien (1979)
05 A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
06 Jaws (1975)
07 Trick 'r Treat (2007)
08 Evil Dead 2 (1987)
09 Scream (1996)
10 Sleepaway Camp (1983)

Tried to get a broad representation of my horror tastes. Could easily add 20 more.

My list is pretty boringly predictable and safe. I'm not much of a horror buff but I do have some faves

1. Alien (1979)
2. The Thing (1982)
3. Jaws (1975)
4. The Exorcist (1973)

7. The Evil Dead (1987)
8. Halloween (1978)
9. Audition (1999)
10. Re-Animator (1985)

Man, now I feel guilty for leaving out some of the other greats. Such is life.

this list consists of movies I've watched multiple times and still enjoy.

2oPvM4Z.jpg

1. From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)
The first half of the movie isn't horror at all. It pretty much like any other Tarantino movie until the second half where it suddenly becomes a vampire movie. Not actually scary in the slightest but still a damn good monster movie that is a ton of fun. Both Tarantino and Rodriguez were firing on all cylinders.

2. Evil Dead 2 (1987)
This beautiful movie manages to pack so many genres into itself that I can't imagine how anyone could hate it. I don't necessarily love it for it's horror aspects but I think it counts as one so therefore I am placing it here.

3. Club Dread (2004)
Super Troopers and Beerfest get so much love that I feel like I am the only one whose favorite Broken Lizard joint is Club Dread. It is basically their formula placed in the horror genre.

4. The Cabin in the Woods (2011)
Once again, not really a horror movie in the traditional sense but I still enjoy it for what it is. It is a fantastic homage to all those other horror movies.

5. Aaah! Zombies!! (aka Wasting Away) (2007)
A parody of other zombie movies, the entire movie takes place from the perspective of the zombies. A must watch if you love yourself some zombie movies.

6. Slither (2006)
Still James Gunn's best movie to date. Full of wit and humor along with a very grotesque looking monster. It stars Nathan Fillion, Elizabeth Banks and Michael Rooker who are all fantastic.

7. Cloverfield (2008)
Of all the found footage movies made out there, this one remains my favorite. I love how we never get a good look at the monster and are instead given tiny glimpses of its horror.

8. Deep Blue Sea (1999)
Jaws always felt too slow to me. Deep Blue Sea moves a lot quicker and also has Samuel L. Jackson and a bird.

9. Evil Dead (2013)
I feel like this movie nails the feeling that the original was going for. It matches similar beats to the first film with its own spin on it.

10. V/H/S/2 (2013)
I really didn't like the first movie. Outside of the haunted house story the rest ranged from mediocre to downright boring. The second one has a much better batch of films with "Safe Haven" (the Indonesian cult one) being the stand out of the bunch that puts it on my list. Honestly, that short wouldn't have needed much to get stretched into a full length film.

Looking at this list it really is a lot of newer stuff. The first Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Streets were close to making my list as well. There was also plenty of other movies I wanted to put like Tucker & Dale and Return of the Killer Tomatoes but those are even deeper into the comedy genre than the ones I listed. Also shout out to Stay Alive, I recently rewatched it and it is just as dumb as when it first came out.

1. The Night of the Hunter (1955)
2. Repulsion (1965)
3. Suspiria (1977)
4. Scream (1996)
5. Psycho (1960)
6. Day of the Dead (1985)
7. Rosemary's Baby (1968)
8. Shaun of the Dead (2004)
9. The Exorcist (1973)
10. Re-Animator (1985)

1. The Thing, John Carpenter
2. Dawn of the Dead, George A Romero
3. Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Tobe Hooper
4. An American Werewolf in London, John Landis
5. The Descent, Neil Marshall (UK ending)

Honourable mention: Blair Witch Project, Sanchez / Myrick

Blair Witch could almost be my number 1, but I put it as an honourable mention because I can't separate the film from the experience. I happened to be in NY when it was just getting word of mouth and went to see it knowing nothing at a late night showing, with a whole bunch of filmgoers in the same boat. I came out terrified, so did everyone else. Sometimes, a film just catches you at the right moment to really leave an impact.

I choose one of each genre and try rank them.

1. Alien (1979)
alien_3.gif

Sci-fi horror, no contest here.

2. Repulsion (1965)

I'm not a huge horror guy, so I haven't seen a lot of the iconic films from the genre (same reason why I skipped the action thread). I got nothing against horror, but I personally enjoy horror elements more than film based entirely in horror. The peppered in bits of horror from Mulholland Drive have probably affected me more than most of this list, but I tried it make as much as a horror list as I could with what I've watched.

You might enjoy something like Rosemary's Baby (1968) and Angel Heart (1987).

I'm such a wuss when it comes to horror, so I've barely seen any.

You might enjoy something like Rosemary's Baby (1968) and Angel Heart (1987).

I actually have copies of Rosemary's Baby and Repulsion but I haven't gotten to them yet. XD

I don't know much about Angel Heart though, I'll definitely have to check it out. Thanks!

Rosemary's Baby is a classic, and in my opinion it beats The Exorcist and The Omen hands down by how it handles the religious themes. Like Ira Levin, the writer of the book the film is based on, said:

The movie of Rosemary’s Baby attracted some of the hostility I had worried about while writing the book. A woman screamed “Blasphemy!” in the lobby after the first New York preview, and I subsequently received scores of reprimanding letters from Catholic schoolgirls, all worded almost identically. The Legion of Decency condemned the film, but the film turned around and condemned the Legion; when the film became a major hit despite, or because of, its C rating, the Legion, already on its last legs, was disbanded.

Lately, I’ve had a new worry. The success of Rosemary’s Baby inspired Exorcists and Omens and lots of et ceteras. Two generations of youngsters have grown to adulthood watching depictions of Satan as a living reality. Here’s what I worry about now: if I hadn’t pursued an idea for a suspense novel almost forty years ago, would there be quite as many religious fundamentalists around today?

Angel Heart is more of a noir thriller, featuring Mickey Rourke and Robert De Niro. Repulsion is definitely worth a watch as well.
