We are always interested in getting to know more people with the same hobby. If you share our love for Indies, let us know! We talk about anything Indie, want to talk about the block design in Braid? The character design in FEZ? Need recommendations? This is the right spot to ask! We'd also love to read more impressions :)

| 3.5 Quick Note about Formatting |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you want to suggest a game that has recently released or that looks interesting, but hasnt released yet, please follow the following formatting structure so the post is picked up by Toma-Bot:
Released games:
TITLE - PRICE (PLAT)
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Not yet released games:
TITLE - PLAT
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Copy the appropriate content and add the proper information for the black writing. Please only include 1 link and 1 image. I tried making it a bit failsafe, so it should be able to deal with 2 links or images as well, but 1 is safer.
If the game is free, then put "Free" as the price, otherwise please use $ or € for the price. You can also include more than one game per post (like the Screenshot saturday posts), but please stick to the above format for every entry.
If someone posts a non-proper formatted post, I'd appreciate if you could repost the game with the same info in the proper format.
I talked to the guy from Pixabyte and MetaVendetta and both are very enthusiastic about the things they love and figured you might appreciate the shoutout as well. If you enjoy anything here or want to give feedback, let these guys know via their websites or also here in this thread. If you appreciate something, let people know. A heads up can sometimes very valuable.
i like indie games
they're pretty awesome
So weird. There are developers making games about oil management sims and cooking games. So much weird stuff. Crazy people.
Great opening post as usual Toma. Cheers for doing this every month. Also very happy Ravenmark got onto the games of the month list.
Awesome work Toma!
I liked Bit.Trip Runner 2 when I played it on iOS, but now, with the bigger screen and a pad is beyond fantastic. Along Badland (need to buy it for Steam soon), the best auto runner there is. Confirmed with the Steam version.
you all seriously need to play The Beginners Guide. I cant remember the last time a game kept me coming back to thinking about it so much... 3-4 weeks after I played it.
Been following this for a few months, game's on Greenlight now
Played an early demo a while back, and it was already pretty solid then
Wizard of Legend
Looks like a cool combat system, how good was the demo with the level/ enemy design?
The demo was really focused on the combat, it only had a small dungeon with a few enemies.
The game has really expanded since then. More areas, more enemies, more spells, etc.
Game seems to be getting a pretty mixed response. Any other impressions? What makes a love it or hate it game?
I would need to look closer into the negative comments, but from 2-3 hours of playing its a very solid Roguelike with quite a lot of content. You have 17 (<3) equipment slots, 3 different game mods (highscore, roguelike and story), several mini games, good loot feeling, a rather engaging combat system with challenging combat, magic, projectiles and whatnot. Its also rather pretty to look at.
Its possible the game drops off later on if the challenge significantly decreases (which I cant imagine in a roguelike), but for now the only issues I could see are the UI, which is a bit cumbersome, the difficulty (people complaining about hard games) and maybe the cutesy dialogue.
But seriously, how can you dislike a game where you can heal yourself with zombie juice malt liquor.
Edit: Dug some more. Its mainly the UI that bugs people. I would agree with what this gentleman is saying:
The UI is not fantastic, but it's not horrible, either. Press a key (U) to open up the high-level menu, then navigate between inventory, equipment, crafting, etc. Sometimes it's easier to use a mouse within some of those sub-menus. I don't understand how this is all that different from Skyrim. It's not the pinnacle of user interface design, but I don't think it should be seen as a show-stopper.
People are also complaining about the pet AI being bad. But again, to me, part of the fun is trying to predict the AI, which, like real intelligence, isn't completely predictable. I've found that with some careful consideration, I've been successful in making things align such that my pet is kicking ♥♥♥ with me most of the time. Again, it takes some strategy.
In my opinion, this game is suffering from the same problems that many roguelike games are suffering from: some gamers just don't "get" these types of games. They expect something different. These types of games are not for everyone. But at least this one has a Classic Mode that allows you to save your progress to learn how it works before going hardcore.
The game is far from unplayable and I think people are incredibly nitpicky about it.
Dragon Fin is getting some mixed responses, but I gotta give the developer some credit, they are replying to like every single bit of criticism and analyzing the core complaints. If they are as proactive with their patches are they are with their communication then that game could turn into a rather respectable roguelike sooner rather then later.
It already is on the "respectable" side in my opinion. Not saying it cant be improved and I am looking forward to the patches (a Cross save roguelike for ps4/vita, :-o), but it doesnt deserve the "mixed" reception at all.
Great work at putting everything together as usual Toma.
Kudos to everyone else that is taking part.
Maybe i am suffering from game overload but i didnt see much else worth putting up from steam that wasn't already getting mentioned by others.
It's not as if there isnt much to look at this month with over 30 new releases.
Its less entries than usual, but whatever. *shrug* 30 is still a ton and we usually neglect some games anyway. (All you go play Beginners Guide!)
Put some time into Vertigo Void (which was a bit of an impulse buy) and I think I can recommend it although know going in that the UI is a little rough. The gameplay itself is a full on Kula World clone but it is a fairly competent one and I must admit that as a Kula-fan I am getting rather nostalgic playing Vertigo Void. If mind pending 3D puzzle landscapes shake your fancy it is worth checking out on steam, bonus to the game itself being dirt cheap.
More people need to know about Sublevel Zero: http://store.steampowered.com/app/327880/
It's such a cool game. If you ever had any like of Descent or other 6dof shooters you should definitely check it out. Other games like Galak-Z seem so barebones in comparison when Sublevel zero has just so much more stuff and full 3d environments, and is cheaper also.
Two completely different games. Sublevel doesn't have Galaxy-Z's stealth or dynamic combat with different factions. Can't really call it barebones in comparison IMO. Sublevel is more about fast-paced arcade-y action
Yeah, Sublevel Zero is awesome.
Somehow I missed that each monthly iteration of this thread had almost totally different games. I was flipping through them and ran across Boss Constructor which apparently just came out of Alpha and looks really interesting. Especially the part where you can have a huge number of AI ships (like 64) fight each other and iterate the design using natural selection.
I don't see why they aren't comparable. They are both action flight roguelites with physics based flight models where you go through procedurally generated environments.
The different factions which fight one another is one of GalakZ's pros, but the stealth really isn't that robust. It just means enemies have a detection radius and start unalerted, which is the same in Sublevel Zero although in that case you really don't stealth around dudes and generally take out everyone in a room.
Playing a lot of GalakZ and seeing the same two structures over and over really does make it feel barebones. As well as the upgrades and items not really feeling that impactful, some are outright bad. The great part is the flight model and combat is just really fun, and the mech mode is great too.
The problem is talking about the game without... talking about it. Not every game that resonates with me, will resonate with others as well, but its quite possibly the most emotional experience I had with a videogame in quite a while. I guess the reason for that is not the actual "topic" that is discussed, as all kinds of videogames can have sad/touching/emotional topics. However, the way the game is structured is quite... interesting as, for me, it resulted in several topics that I thought about on a deeper level than I usually would. I am STILL contemplating how the game made me feel and what I think about it, how this shapes my current actions. I know this all sounds terribly pretentious, but I think its probably one of the most important games released this year.
Btw, "game" as in the way we would define "game" here. They called it virtual theatre (instead of the negatively connotated "walking simulator").
One more thing that maybe helps emphasizing the point above
Compared to Dear Esther:
Dear Esther was a pretty game with a subtle narrative and an engaging story, but thats where it ended for me. The Beginners Guide had me second guessing not only the narrative, but also my thoughts on it, my behaviour in general, people I meet daily. This wont happen to all people, but IF it works for you, this is quite a powerful experience. A friend of mine had a similar experience to me btw.
So it's November already (doesn't feel like it over here, 70 degrees!). Looking at what's upcoming on Steam, there are some more cool games planned for 2015 - Hard West, Slain, RIOT, The Banner Saga 2, maybe Ghost Song - but it's probably a good time to start thinking about the best indies of 2015
So many good games came out this year. That's going to be hard. I know some games that are definitely going to make my list, but ranking and such is going to take a lot of thought
Off the top of my head, SOMA, Ori and The Blind Forest, Infinifactory, Duskers, and Rocket League are all easy shoo-ins for me
Full list of IGF 2016 entries is up
Edit: Quickly browsed through the entries and a lot of cool games I hadn't heard of before. Will post some later
Besieged is pretty fucking amazing. And yes, most of the best outcomes come from exercises in overuse of the equipment. One of my favourite devices I have made in it is this multi-firing catapult that can unload a hail of rocks at an aimed target and then rips itself apart from the force of the swinging arms. I love it.
Stardew Valley Update!!!!!
Concerned Ape posted it today:
I spent October trying to finish the single-player game. My daily routine involves playing the game for several hours and taking note of any bugs, game balance issues or details that I want to improve. Then I spend the rest of the day fixing everything on the list. I guess you could call it an in-house beta. I rarely encounter serious bugs anymore… most of the work I’m doing involves tweaks in gameplay, prices, progression… small graphical problems, etc. Everything is pretty solid and every day it gets closer to being a finished product.
So I’m thinking about doing a closed beta when single player is ready, while I simultaneously work on finishing multiplayer. Then, when multiplayer is finished and well-tested I will release the final game. I can’t make any promises or give any details about a beta version right now, but it’s something I want to do.
Here’s what I’m thinking for a release timetable:
1. Finish single player (November)
2. Closed Beta (December)
3. Finish Multiplayer (December - ???)
4. Full Release
Also, the complete OST is being sold via the Humble widget on the game's site.
