i dont think i need to worry about this being hard to find since its now NIS america publishing whew

I liked Disgaea a lot but never finished it. For whatever reason.

Same thing with La Pucelle.

Same thing with Phantom Brave, except I didn't like that as much.

I didn't bother with Makai Kingdom. Should I? And will Disgaea 2 be just a lot like Disgaea 1?

I've been playing through the extra stuff in Disgaea again as I wait for this. Is there an art book out for this game like they did with the last, or are there any plans for it?

If you ordered at NIS America's site previous to August 2nd, you would have got an artbook with it. But if you still pre-order from the site, you get a soundtrack, the manual data, and the Prinny cursor. So it's still worth it :D

I've been reading a sampling of some of the additions..this game is going to be frigging deep! I can't wait! Disgaea is addicting enough as it is.

BTW, double jump's guide for the game is over 600 pages!

nice to see the summer drought is over! ^_^
anyway... are you sure this is published by atlus because i don't see the atlus logo anywhere and instead i see a big nis america logo

Hey, you're right... I guess it's being published by NIS America themselves. I really didn't think to check hard because the first game was published by Atlus.

The reason Atlus published the first one is because NISA didn't exist when Disgaea came out. The popularity of the game caused the opening of NISA and the pumping out of N1 goodness.

I've never played the first one, but I bought it like two years ago or something. Should I try it?

It's definitely for an extremely small niche of gamers, but if you like it at all you'll really love it. I'd certainly try it out. Disgaea I is one of my favorite games of all time :D

Already ordered the gamer set from NIS (the one that had everything but the manga) and got in with the artbook. It's sad that I own all of these games (Makai, Disgaea, La Pucelle, Phantom Brave), and haven't beaten any of them :( I got a ways into Disgaea and it was great, but it's just time consuming, since I keep getting distracted. I should at least force myself just to get through the main game on that one.

why is it getting so-so scores from the better sites?

Probably the fact it appeals more to the niche gamer (anime stuff, stat grinding, etc). Sequels that are very similar also seem to sometimes score not as well in print mags (see DW, etc), which maybe the case here since there's been several NIS games out now that look and play (somehat) similar.

Edit: See what I get for having a more wordy post? :lol

I thought Disgaea did really well with the press though, and none of the follow ups really were as compelling. I hope this is more like the first released game.

Ohhhh shit. Gotta get this one. I only rented the first one and I'm kicking myself that I forgot about it. I'm definitely going to pick this up.

This game can't come out soon enough--I've already cleared my schedule and pre-ordered it from Amazon with two-day shipping. With any luck I'll get it on August 30. (I didn't know about the bonuses for pre-ordering from NIS America--on the other hand, by the time I put in the hours I'm planning to, I'll have heard the music so much that a soundtrack CD would be useless to me.)

I liked Phantom Brave fine enough (though it's arguably even more broken than Disgaea 1), but I want my grid-based gameplay back.

That's what it appears like from the reviews i've read so far

Thanks Ami. I'll look into that.

I'd like to see less of an emphasis on grinding as a necessity, and more of the exploration of the item world and leveling coming naturally. Cave of Ordeal 3 HAD to have been designed with grinding in mind.

Atlus does, however, still distribute all NIS America games.

I'm on the fence with this game. I bought Makai Kingdom, played it for a few days, but just couldn't fully get into it. Also, I don't think I was playing the game right. But I think i'll be renting this game and give it a go.

New english language screens from IGN in anticipation of this awesome games release:

Hmm, I think I'll pass on Disgaea 2 one for now. I haven't had time play through the first one, and from what I hear it's a very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very long game.

But the screens definitely make the game look more promising.

Btw, as an aside, anyone know what happened to Odin's Sphere? Shown behind closed doors at E3, and still not revealed. Supposedly it had like the best 2D graphics ever!

Eurogamer is reporting that the PAL version of Disgaea 2 (due out in October from KOEI) is going to have some preorder bonuses too:

Eurogamer said:
Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories is also due out on PS2 this autumn, and the UK version will offer a choice of a Japanese or localised Western voice-acting track, and will also come bundled with a soundtrack CD. Pre-orders will net a limited edition artwork book.

So the sequel features d00ds, Rangers, grid play, attacks while stacked, 600 page double jump book, more dark councils, geopanels...

sold.

And I agree, the followup games (and prequel) were fun but never matched Disgaea's charm.

It's hidden away like Disgaea PSP.

That 600 page doublejump figure may be a bit inflated. The few doublejump guides I've seen use page sizes significantly smaller than, say, your average Prima guide.

Even accounting for that, it's still an enormous number.

I forgot about this game. So many good PS2 and DS games coming out this fall and all are long and depthinous. I might as well put my 360 in a closet until January.

Disgaea is only long if you decide to do the post-game content. The game itself can be easily beaten in 30-35 hours.
