Three in January - New Year, Old Games

(and new games too!)

The challenge is to finish three or more games in a month. You didn't need to start the game this month, as it's the finishing that matters. And what counts as finishing a game can sometimes be a matter of opinion, so go with what you're happy with.

Please post your goals for the month, and please share your triumphs and setbacks and impressions of the games as the month goes by.

How Long to Beat is a big help, giving me get a good idea of how much longer a game will take.
Backloggery can be used to catalogue the games you have and haven't finished, to prevent a game from falling through the cracks.
Does anyone have other tools they use?
52 Games. 1 Year. 2016. is a thread for if you're looking for a bigger challenge.

I find that having this goal can be a good reminder to pick up some old saves, and motivation to continue games through the occasional frustrating times.

Good luck to everyone chipping away at their backlog. :)

___________
As for me:

I finished:
Tales from the Borderlands: Episode 3 to 5: Platinumed (finishing the game is automatically a platinum). Episode 5 finished on the 3rd. I wish dialogue options weren't timed but that is the main complaint and it is otherwise great with its character interactions. It could make its way somewhere around 10 on my GOTY 2015 list, for its fun characterisation and the dramatic directions it can go.
The Wolf Among Us: Episode 3 to 5: Platinumed. Finished episode 5 on the 13th, platinumed on the 16th. It's interesting playing different types of these games close together as it shows there's a difference in how I role play the different characters. I played Bigby as an ethical sheriff, though to get the platinum I had to go back and make some bad decisions.
The Walking Dead: Season 2: Episode 1 to 5: Episode 5 finished on the 22nd. I had heard it wasn't as good as the first season, but it was very good. Maybe as good as the first season but I played that too long ago.

I counted each episode as a game but also tried to finish the three full seasons.

I'm also playing:
Tales of Zestiria: I'm probably over halfway through the game. I like the characterisation and have fun with it despite not liking how many systems they put in place. I have a lot of the iris gems.
Yakuza 5: This is probably biting off too much, since I am just up to Part 1, Chapter 3. I'll have to go through the main story more directly and not worry about not doing every last bit of side content.
Time Clickers: I've been playing this for a few days. I'm seeing if I can get all the achievements. It has some strategy to its upgrades. It's a very addictive game and that is a bad thing. I have it under control now.

This will be easy. I am very close to finishing 3 games right now. I expect to finish Rise of the Tomb Raider and Life is Strange today. Soon after, probably metal gear solid 5: tPP.

Edit: aaaaaaaaand done. I knocked out all three of the aforementioned games on the first day of the year.

I currently own the Telltale Games Collection (WD S1&2, TWAU, GOT, and TFTB) and Life is Strange (bought that on the Xbox sale because 10 bucks). Despite buying the Telltale Game Collection over a year ago (as well as owning TWD S1 in one form or another on like 4 platforms), I have yet finish a single one of those games. In fact, I haven't even start GoT and TFTB and I've only gotten an episode into TWAU and TWD. I aim to finally fix that. I've already started, in fact: I'm playing through E1 of TWD right now. I believe.

(PS: the reason I own TWD on 4 platforms is really dumb. I originally bought it for PS3. Was gonna play it with my parents. That didn't end up happening. Then I got it on PC. However I quickly found it was gonna run like shit on my laptop, so I abandoned that idea. Then I won a copy of the PS Vita version in a Destructoid contest. Never bothered with it. And then I bought the Telltale Games Collection when it first came out on Xbox One. It was half off. 55 bucks for 5 Telltale jams? Hell yeah.)

This month, I need to beat:

Halo 5: Guardians
The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing
Adventure Time: The Secret of the Nameless Kingdom
Uncharted: Golden Abyss

Some months can be easier than others. :)

I've had months like that, and went on to finish 9 or 10 games in those months.

Here's the games I'd like to beat this month:
  • Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky FC
  • Resident Evil Zero
  • Talos Principle
  • The Witness
  • Yakuza 5

But in reality I'll be lucky to finish three of them.

1. Beyond Two Souls (PS4) - Started this already, but it will be my first game I complete this year.

2. Steins;Gate (PS Vita) - Been looking forward to trying this out for a while, impressions seem to be really good.

3. Fire Emblem Awakening (3DS) - I never finished it, going to try and do that before Fates releases.

I've been playing The Wolf Among Us and Tales from the Borderlands over the last month. I'm two episodes into both. I should have played TWAU earlier! And TFTB is great too. :)
The Walking Dead S2 came with PS+ a few months ago but I only played the first scene, thought it was very dramatic but just haven't continued it yet. I liked the first season a lot.

I will try with these:

Yoshis wooly World (nearly complete)
Batman Arkham Knight (nearly complete)
Darksiders 2
King Quest episode 2

I'm attempting the full-year challenge, so I suppose I'll be visiting the monthly threads throughout the year. I have widened my backlog substantially during the steam sales, so I'm confident I have the material to get a decent start in the new year.

The first game on my list is a replay of the first Witcher (in conjunction with a re-reading of the books), and I should probably be able to finish that one this week. I might get straight into the second one after that to set myself up for a fresh attempt at beating Wild Hunt.

Other than that, I'd like to get into Life Is Strange and Ori and the Blind Forest for the GOTY thread, but it's possible I'll let myself take more time with those (wouldn't want to spoil the experience).

Edit:

Completed:

* The Witcher
* Her Story
* The Beginner's Guide

Guess that means I'm done.

I have been working on Tales of Zestiria since October. Maybe this month will be the month!
I need to pick some short games. To many rpgs in my back log.
Uncharted 3
Freedom Planet
Xcom Enemy Unknown
Dark Souls 2
RE :0
Planescape Torment
I don't even remember what games I chose last month.:(

I started this so well last year and then fell off around the Summer (I wasn't in much of a gaming mood then). But 2016, let's get back on track.

For this month I want to finish Dragon Quest Heroes (just got the last 2 super bosses to go), Life is Strange (I've only finished the first episode so far) and Uncharted Drake's Fortune 'cause I need to get through the NDC before UC4, so I'm thinking one a month.

Then there's all the bricks I'm sitting on that I'll keep chipping away at like Tales of Zesteria, Fallout 4, Witcher 3 + DLC and Bloodborne + DLC.

My three for this month:

Until Dawn (PS4)
Just Cause 3 (PC)
Back to the Future: The Game (PS4)

Also Life is Strange is a possibility with the physical release.

I've finished a couple of extra things so far this month:

XCOM: Enemy Within (PC)
Anno 2205 (PC)

Right. First time I've attempted to challenge myself. Whether this will happen or not I don't know - work consumes ALL my time, even what is nominally free - but I can at least aim for something!

Trails in the Sky - First Chapter - I've told myself I can't buy Cold Steel (which is out here end of January) unless I beat at least FC. I should buy and beat SC as well I guess, but that's what's in my head. Just started Chapter 2 today, been for a wander around Ruan.

Ys - Memories of Celceta - this will be harder. I tend to only play handheld stuff when I go away, hence over the Christmas period I managed to get a bit stuck into this. I'm about 2/3rds through I reckon, I've got to Duran I think.

Dropsy - a point and click game shouldn't be too hard to finish. I don't really like this very much, I find the pictorial dialogue irritating (i like to read, dammit!), but I've spent the money so I had better try and beat it. Also, it's the highest icon on my desktop, so there's that...

Already have my three for the month. Had little left in the games when I beat them after waking up.

Prune (iOS)
Lara Croft Go (iOS]
Tales from the Borderlands (PS4)

But I have some additional games I want to beat.

Ys: Oath in Felghana (PC)
D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die (PC)
Monument Valley (iOS)
Lit (iOS)

Halfway through the last two so they should be done soon. Ys shouldn't take too long either.

Dark Souls II Scholar of the First Sin - I've played and beaten Dark Souls and Bloodborne, figured I need to knock this out before 3 is out.
Life is Strange - I've gotten my girlfriend to agree to playing this together since its a little more grounded than most. Very excited to jump into it.
Fallout 4 - I love fallout, and have fallen out of 4 for some reason. Gonna change that this month.

Backup in case I fail on one of them... Wolfenstein: The Old Blood or The Order 1886. Both still in shrinkwrap from Christmas season shopping.

Halo 5: Guardians - on chapter 9/15.
Yakuza 5 - on part 2/5.
Wolfenstein: The New Order - getting this in the mail soon, plus the expansion.

For IRL reasons I foresee a real tough year for my backlog busting. My goal is to finish my 2016 games in 2016. Thankfully January is pretty clear, but then half the games I want this year come in or near Feb.

This month:

  • Batman AK (already a few hours in)
  • Metal Gear Solid 2 HD (1/3 in; had trouble getting TV time lately)
  • Undertale

I also have a plane ride coming up. Have four or five (3)DS titles I can draw from. I'll likely try the special world in Mario 3D Land or maybe on of the DS Castlevania games

I aim to finish 26 games this year, the 52 games a year is too much for me.
For this month:
- Undertale
- Bloodborne Old Hunter, need to resub to ps plus first to get my back up save.
- Wndwaker, only played about 4 hours and have been sitting on it since, or maybe I'll give Wonderful 101 a spin.

Having never gone past Disc one of FF7, I will aim for that. I also have FFX to finish.

If untried really hard I could maybe finish black ops 3 campaign

Witcher 3
Batman: Arkham Knight
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Already started all 3 of these so this should be quick and easy. Almost at the end of the game for W3.

1. Dust: Ely. Tale:
2. Batman: Arkham City
3. Brothers

Will use this to cut through my backlog.

Dropsy I find the pictorial dialogue irritating (i like to read, dammit!).

Just a quick tip: It isn't dialogue as much as it's just Dropsy trying to understand what the person is communicating. We knew people wouldn't understand all of the icons. It's designed to work with the character animations & environmental details as a clue regarding how you can satisfy them.

I'm going for a lot this month. I think I can do it!

Rise of the Tomb Raider (Xbox One)
Need For Speed (Xbox One)
Call of Duty: Black Ops III (PS4)
Assassin's Creed: Syndicate (PS4)
Yakuza 3 (PS3)
Shadowrun Returns (PC)
Persona 4: Dancing All Night (Vita)

Starting the year with a Pokemon marathon and finishing off my backlog.

Games beaten:
Teraway Unfolded

Currently playing:
Pokemon Black Edition

Planned to start
Assasins Creed Syndicate [PS4]
Rise of the Tomb Raider [PC] (if this comes out before the 25th i should be able to beat it)
Call of Duty: Black ops 3 campaign (heard its meh, but for completions sake)

Bought a PS4 for Christmas, so I have even more games to add to the backlog, joy!

Games I would like to complete this month:

1. Bloodborne: Already started and beat the first couple of bosses, really enjoying this game a lot, and I look forward to playing it all the way through.

2. Transistor: Picked this game up a long time ago and never played through it. Gifted it to a good friend, and we plan on playing concurrently and sharing our thoughts.

3. Yoshi's Wooly World: Left off in World 2 and always seem to be putting this one off, maybe this is the month I actually finish it?

Bonus Round: Finish Witcher 3: Left off at around the 30 hour mark. To be completely honest, playing this game is like pulling teeth for me (hate the medieval dung hut setting), but due to the praise it has received I feel obligated to complete it.

Hopefully Destiny doesn't suck up all my playing time though...

1- DmC: Definitive Edition
2- Wolfenstein: The New Order
3- Dishonoured: Definitive Edition

Kudos to the January Sale.

For me, my possible candidates are...

Yakuza 3 (PS3) - A few chapters into this one, and I'm loving it! I usually end up starting these games very slowly and then by the midpoint of the game something clicks and I power through it, and I'm positive that this is going to happen once again.

CHAOS;HEAD (PC) - I've been streaming this one nightly and reading it to a few internet people and it's been such a blast thus far. The story is starting to pick up and I find myself wanting to play it more and more because having to stop at 6am or so always leaves me hungry to find out what happens next!

Dying Light (PS4) - Been running through this one, and although I may not hit 100% completion or anything like that this month, I'd definitely like to at least finish the main story and perhaps the side quests.

I also have a few shorter games that I'm considering like Her Story and Everybody's Gone to the Rapture.

Fallout 4
I've already dug over 60h into it in the past two weeks and I'm certain I'll get it done this month. Maybe even this weekend. It's starting to get a bit tiresome, so I decided to approach the main quests more determinedly now. Not planning to go for 100% in this game. It's just not interesting and rewarding enough for me.

Super Mario 3D World

My copy arrived at few days ago but I'm planning on playing this exclusively in coop, just like Rayman Legends. I may end up liking this game too much though and just go through it on solo if coop doesn't work out on a regular basis this time.

The Cat Lady
One of those many indie titles I've always wanted to try and now that I've finally got a build for pc gaming, I'm ready to dig. Got it this night from Steam winter sales for not even two bucks.

Those games will most likely not be the only ones I'll finish this month.

- A Link to the Past(I was lost since a stoped playing a while ago)
- Silent Hill (I can do it, it's just a matter of commitment)
- Rayman (PSone, it's easy at first and then...man)

December was a good month at 3 off the backlog, should be able to push on and deliver at least that this month.

1. Sleeping Dogs : Definitive Edition (PS4)

I'm about two thirds of the way through, should be able to mop the rest up this weekend if schedule allows. Great story is pulling me through some so-so missions and technical issues.

2. YS I (PC)

I've always wanted to play an YS game, think this month I'll break my duck with a view to pushing through all of them in Q1 2016.

3. Wolfenstein : The Old Blood

Picked it up on sale, loved New Order so hopefully this will at least match that experience.

As time allows I might make a start on Satellite Reign but I've heard its kind of a long game so it depends how much other hobbies and life intrude, and how long the above are.

I'm absolutely terrible at finishing games nowadays, so this should be a good help. That and I'm on vacation until the very end of January.

Jeanne D'Arc (PSP)
Had been wanting to play this forever and finally got it. Seems like I'm about halfway through.

TIS-100 (PC)
Probably the hardest game I'll be playing this year since it's basically little challenges based on psuedo-assembly language.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen (PS3)
Was having a lot of fun with this, but put it off when the summer started. Probably won't finish but we'll see!

Yoshi's Wooly World (Wii U)
On World 3 out of... not sure actually. Playing Co-Op so while it's not a long game, it's dependent on if my partner wants to play too

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel
Until Dawn

Should be easy enough, I'm probably halfway through all of them. Though Until Dawn might be tricky since I've just been playing it with my family and letting them make the choices. Dunno if we'll get together again this month.

Let's do itttt

Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga

I don't know if I can do three, but maybe the follow game allows exception.

Phantom Brave: The Hermuda Triangle. I've always wanted to get into NIS's games, and I figure I would go through them in release order. With Rhapsody, La Pucelle, and Disgaea under my belt, this would be the next game to go hunker down with.

The reason why I think this counts as three games instead of one is because of the volume of content it has. There's the main game, the sequel story mode Another Marona, and then the usual NIS postgame jazz. That'll probably take me the whole month, if I can get it done even in that timeframe. :P

Two big games and one little one this month:

1. SMT: Strange Journey - Grinding my ass off to beat Mithra. The first Mithra, in the second dungeon. I suck at this game, but I can't stop.

2. Brutal Legend - What stopped me from playing this the first time around? This thing is incredible. My neck is about to fall off or get even stronger from all the headbanging.

3. Tormentum: Dark Sorrow - I haven't touched this yet but the art style is Giger bait so I can't not play it.

I'm also replaying the Blackwell series to get the achievements that didn't exist in my first run through and I love it even more this time around.

I picked up N++ during the flash sale, have about 5 hours into it, and I'm loving it. I'm commiting to at least finishing all of the single player content (don't know about all gold, tho!)

Other than that, I'll maybe finish off gauntlet, and the platinum for rocket league (only need the 500km driven trophy).

Should be able to get these done considering it's my current game rotation.

Rise of The Tomb Raider
Halo 2 (MCC)
Uncharted 2 (Uncharted Collection)

Hoping to get these done:

Wolfenstein The New Order - no idea how much more is left to go in this one lol

Alien Isolation - right at the halfway mark for this one

Fire Emblem Awakening - just beat chapter 11 and I've been binging like hell on this game since I got it for christmas lol

Here's hoping! Got a bunch of stuff to finish
