Atlus and VanillaWare have released a new video for Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir introducing the game’s post-clear elements.

After clearing the game, “Xtra New Game” is unlocked. Through this mode, you can choose from your save data and play the game from the beginning while inheriting your items and ability level. If you select the “Hell” difficulty, you can play the game in a super hard mode where your HP never increases from its initial 200-point value.

Enemies are more difficult on the second playthrough. Even if you play on normal, if your characters aren’t sufficiently leveled, then it’ll be tough. There are also new enemies and weapons.

There is also a 30-round special boss rush mode where you can battle all of the game’s mid-bosses and bosses with your favorite character. They’re all set to level 50 and there are no checkpoints or opportunities to use items boxes.

Additionally, Atlus announced a PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PS Vita demo will launch tomorrow, January 8 in Japan. You’ll be able to play all five characters through an action stage selected and configured for the demo and battle the boss “Belial.” There won’t be any story parts, so you won’t be able to use the demo save data for the full game.

This was all in the PS2 version.

Except, IIRC, "Hell" had you permanently set at something lower than 200 HP:

Can't wait to sink my teeth into this game's beautiful, oddly slightly unsettling art in HD

I 100%ed and platted Dragons Crown and Muramasa (including DLC)

I will continue my trend of playing through all the content of Vanillawares games.

Am I crazy or does that combat look way better than the original? Much more responsive, more moves, faster speed, etc.

Recorded video of me playing the game for the first time as Gwendolyn (PS4).

Never played the original, but the more I've been following Leifthrasir, the more compelled I've felt to play it. The demo's pretty short and it seemed to be pretty easy, but I had a great time with it. Bummer that the English version's looking to come out in June.

Edit: Also, all of the JPN PSN links:

- PlayStation 4
- PlayStation 3
- PlayStation Vita

Man I can't wait for this game. Looks so good.

Really looking forward to playing this finally, I think it's the only major Vanillaware title I haven't ever gotten a chance to play with yet.

Nice. No plans to import the game anytime soon, but "PS4 or Vita?" has been my question to my self when it was announced. I would think portability would be preferred, but I've wondered if 1080p could really make an impact or not on my experience with the game. Now I can download both these demo's and find out for myself how I'd prefer to play this.

Loved the Original but was blown away by this short demo,

Combat is much better and no framerate issues that plagued the PS2, One of the prettiest games I've seen in some time.

Also seemed to be more variety in the stage design since most of the originals were on a flat plane, but they took some of the vertical movement that Muramasa had and seemed to be awesome.

Mercedes still op though, not quite as much as the original though.

Gonna set this to download from PSN while I'm at work right now. Looking forward to dipping into the demo tonight.

Most of the things I disliked about Odin Sphere should be fixed in this version (slowdown, etc.). Looking forward to checking out the redone combat, too.

Sounds like this isn't just an HD rerelease. Excited to try it out when I get home. :D

That looks fantastic. I am really excited for the new gameplay. Can't wait til it comes out in the US. I'll probably double dip on Vita and PS4.

I've always loved Vanillaware's outputting, and Odin Sphere is no exception. It's absolutely gorgeous in motion and the demo was fun to play overall; definitely picking it up when it hits the U.S.

Shit! I didn't realize this was coming out so soon in Japan! Crap, I'm in the middle of Tomb Raider, and DQ Builders comes out on the 28th. :S

Combat is greatly improved. A combination of Muramasa and Dragon's Crown. Muramasa (on Vita) has this weird input buffer. That's gone in Dragon's Crown and this. Combos are great. Stages are like Muramasa now with vertical areas to reach.

Captured some gameplay off the PS4 when the demo finished downloading:

Gwen
Oz
Velvet

Definitely interested in this game as I never played the PS2 version. Now if only Atlus would release 3D Dot Game Heroes and Dragon's Crown on PS4, I would be one happy camper. :)

Alice is their kid. YOU CANNOT MAKE ME FEEL OTHERWISE ;_; All these years and i won't give up the dream

how do you open the movesets menu?

My friend and I already found some broken combos on bosses. The staggering works the same way as it does in Muramasa; the first hit that removes a segment of a lifebar puts the enemy in a juggle/stagger state. Carefully planning when to use moves that will trigger this is how you do big damage to bosses.

The only thing holding me back from importing this is the price (around $80 with markup on PSN Yen cards), the language barrier for the customization system, and the small community that might lead to a drought on translation guides.

nice. the hype is real.

Running great on the Vita, will probably stick to its version as Muramasa and Dragon's Crown were great travelling partners.

The background of the mid boss battle stage ownz if you fly up high.

Also Mercedes is weird but cool.

Real tempted to download this via my JPN account, but I wonder if I should wait for Atlus to put out an US version if there's a bit of a language barrier to playing this.

Just played through the PS4 demo and checked out all characters (I completely missed OS when it first came out). Looks and plays great, will be grabbing it next week.

I have zero experience with original Odin Sphere so I can't comment on the difference but this demo is totally amazing.

I urge everyone to try the demo for themselves, it's beyond amazing what they've done to improve their combat from the original and even the simplicity of their other games! Seriously people, this game is FUN.

February is a nightmare month really.
