Just started a new play through. Going to do Leon A scenario, then Claire A scenario, then B scenario for both characters.

Core gameplay still holds up very well though i can see why tank style controls pit people off, really miss the quick turn they introduced in RE3 it's good for getting out of tights spots.

Last time I played the game I beat Leon's scenario in about 6 hours, I should be able to do a lot of it from memory.

BTW anyone else read out the files aloud? Even when you're playing alone? Maybe that's just me who does that.

No, no. You're doing it wrong. You should go Leon A -> Claire B, then Claire A -> Leon B. That's how the game was meant to be played. The B scenario provides you with additional information about the story and mixes gameplay things a little bit (different bosses, different starting point, different events etc.). By playing both A scenarios first and then both B scenarios later would be like starting a new game, stopping at the middle of it, restarting the game (and e.g. making different choices), stopping at the middle again and then continuing from the point you stopped your first playthrough.

I have done all four before so I know this but I am going to do it this way this time.
 
Repeat. The self destruct sequence has been activated. This sequence may not be aborted. All employees proceed to the emergency car at the bottom platform (platform... platform...)

As far as I know the canon way to play through is Claire A then Leon B but who knows Capcpom always go back and fourth on what they actually treat as canon.

The Claire A and Leon B route is considered canon. You can see it even in the cut scene were Claire and Leon are separated.

Fun fact: the N64 version actually has the same analog controls as REmake HD and RE0 HD have :)

Just replayed this at the end of December. Does Claire's first scenario all the way through in one night with my best buddy. Stayed up all night remembering the good ol' days of 1998.
 
I can't freaking wait for the remake. I have played this game every few years since it released, and it's like Ocarina of Time in that it is designed so well that it remains a great experience filled with fantastic atmosphere.

Ah, sorry. I mistook RTTP for LTTP and thought you haven't finished the whole game before, just Leon A scenario.

Just like with RE1, there isn't a true canon version of RE2. Capcom can take whatever they want from both LeonA/B and ClaireA/B scenarios. From RE6 we know that Sherry was infected with the G-Virus (ClaireA), yet Wesker's Report says that Leon threw the G-virus away (LeonA).
 
I could never even get past the first scene. The notion that you have to kill all the enemies before moving on had been so heavily ingrained into my mind through years of video game conditioning, that it never even occured to me that I just ought to run away.

Lol when I first played RE1 as Chris I was determined to knife the first zombie before continuing on for the same reasons. After several attempts, I just walked out the door and...wha? Progress??
 
This game is special for introducing the best woman in the series: Claire Redfield <3
 
One of the first 3D games I played back then.
Getting to the police station, the first licker, Mr. X, the jump scares, ...


One of the best experiences ever. The game kept on giving from beginning to end.
I really hope Capcom doesn't screw up on the remaster.
 
As someone who missed out on this franchise most of his life---I have been grinding so many of the games the past month.

Only RE I played was RE5 and I platinumed it. In the past month I have added Revelations 1, 2, and am currently playing both 4 and 6. 6 is almost complete, but I have to force myself to play 4.

GAF would hate me due to 4 being the GOAT, but those controls do NOT withstand the test of time.

If/when RE2 remake happens this year I hope we get control updates. That's all I ask.

I see REZero is doing that, and I'm thinking of grabbing Origins Collection to experience those games as well.

I'm fairly sold on it already.

My biggest reasons for staying away from RE games growing up is that my folks, and myself included, did not want me to play games that I wasn't old enough and ready for... strange now that 10 year olds are playing games like GTA and CoD lol.

Another reason I stayed away was RE5 was...not what I expected. A buddy at the time hyped the series to no end being amazing survival horror, etc. I played RE5 (having come off Dead Space as my first survival horror game), and felt very underwhelmed. I liked RE5 plenty, but as an apples to apples to Dead Space as a survival horror title? I thought it wasn't in the same league.

I would say The Evil Within is my favorite survival horror title at this point as it was my GOTY 2 years ago when it released.

How would you compare RE1 and Zero to say Dead Space and Evil Within ? It has to be about atmosphere and gameplay more than anything. Stories can be junk IMO, but when a game oozes atmosphere I'm in heaven. (Souls series excels at this like no other)
 
Replayed this a few years ago, was shocked at how barren Leon A actually was. No challenge at all. This was Biohazard 2 even, with Japanese text. Shit gets good with the B Scenarios. Dat save room theme doe.

Usually have no problems with Tank controls. The AI is suited for it as well. After 10 minutes I forget about them. REmake HD was masterful still.

All four scenarios are canon, it's a mash-up. The game was written and intended to be played that way. Just because some major scenes from certain scenarios are canon doesn't mean the other scenarios are completely invalidated. Degeneration shows that Claire B is canon because Claire fought G-Birkin's first form, for instance. Darkside Chronicles' files also confirm that Leon encountered both Marvin and Kendo.

There are even events that occur but aren't seen in the game, such as Leon taking the G-Virus from Ada and throwing it away, while it's never actually shown what happens to the G-Virus that Ada took after it was dropped by Sherry. He takes it from Annette and throws it away in Leon A. This is what's meant by a mash-up. You're meant to play from all perspectives, and subsequent games define what truly happens while you have all the information available to you.

I really hate correcting this. Especially when Kamiya himself made it clear.

Q3. "Leon A & Claire B" and "Claire A & Leon B." Which scenario combination could be considered the true one?

A3. Both of them, of course. To digress, we really wanted to show off the merits of the zapping system, so we cut out elements of diversion from this game. We did this because by having 4 different zapping story scenarios, we felt that players would have to play through the branching story a number of times in order to see everything. Should players have time, it would be interesting to see where things differ among scenarios.

You're doing yourself a total disservice if you view BIO2 as just "Claire A/Leon B."
 
The first 3 RE's are games I have to play atleast once every year even if it was for an hour or two. Unmatched atmosphere thanks to the soundtrack and level design that only leaves the player satisfied (mostly in 1 and 2) when you figure out how to reach places quickly. It's the kind of game design that makes you feel as if you got better in the game without upgrades being part of the gameplay. Sublime.

Man, the remake is going to be damn good if they follow what REmake did to the first game.
 
I love this game as much as anyone, yet I would rank as the 4th best RE. That's how good this series used to be.

It pains me to see what it has become.

I had no idea the controls were like that. Awesome fact. I thought REmake HD was the first. I see why people would use these controls, but also I think if you use them you are not considering the game was built around the tank controls. Enemy attacks, the fixed camera's, the level layout... all balanced around the tank controls.

Haha I still get this sometimes as an auditory hallucination. I really need to go back and replay this. I remember beating the game in just over 2 hours for the rocket launcher, judging from my complete RE amnesia playing the ReREmake, my next playthrough will probably be pitifully long.

Two different characters really taking two completely different paths and experiencing two different narratives that together formed a complete, comprehensive account. It really demanded the player play it twice to get everything out of it, which might be why nobody will ever do this again.

I really wish Capcom would release RE2 and RE3 on Steam or GOG.

Gameplay-wise, DS and TEW are RE4 "clones" and thus have nothing really in common with RE1+0 since they heavily rely on backtracking, puzzle solving, slow-methodical movement and a very restricted form of inventory management (though you can just drop items on the floor in Zero). Atmosphere wise, RE1+0 are absolute god-tier thanks to the amazing production values they threw at those games back then.
