So is this confirmation CELL/RSX can decode high bitrate AVC/H.264?

And PS3 can playback dual layer 50GB Blu-Ray discs?

After all it has been rumoured that the lack of 50GB dual layer Blu-Ray discs and AVC has been because PS3 is unable to play them :D

http://www.homemediaretailing.com/news/html/breaking_article.cfm?sec_id=2&&article_ID=9606

High bitrate AVC/H.264

...a number of Fox titles take full advantage of the format’s high-definition technology and Java-based interactivity, with AVC (MPEG-4 compression) and HD “Lossless” Audio.

Fox titles with AVC are Behind Enemy Lines, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Speed.

Dual layer 50GB Blu-Ray

Also on the list: the director’s cut of Ridley Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven, due Nov. 14 in North America, Australia and Europe and June 10 in Japan. The release will be one of the industry’s first dual-layer BDs, to accommodate the nearly four-hour running time.

“I reviewed [the film] on Blu-ray Disc, and I was astounded,” Scott said. “It was like looking through a window of clarity. It was the most impressive thing I’ve ever seen.”

Good to hear more titles using better codecs and 50GB. Amir on avs keeps insinuating that PS3 won't be able to handle the high bitrates

Totally stupid, both IBM and Sony demostrated how Cell has the power to decode more than 10 HD streamings simultaneously.

Well as you know he works for MS so it's in his best interests to spread as much FUD about PS3 and Blu-Ray as possible.

Oh and anyway wasn't Sony supposed to make an announcement too today about Blu Ray?Fox has announced the first titles as scheduled.

Yes, where ist that major announcement? Give us plx. :)

MPEG2 though - much less computationally intensive. But yes, it should be a cakewalk. I'm surprised Amir would make such suggestions while being confident that the Xbox 360 can handle the same + TrueHD audio

He's not really that funny. Unfortunately he uses just enough cold fact to woo AVSforum readers who then take the rest of his spin quite often as gospel.

Well his point was that it took them a lot of effort to get the HD DVD working perfectly on the 360 and since BR's specs require a higher bitrate that it'll be extremely difficult on the PS3.

I'd eat my modem if the PS3 has any such issues though.

Good lord, sounds like someone was actually starting to fall for DM's FUD campaign at OA. :lol

amirm at AVS has been running the same one...

...amirm = Deadmeat?

Would explain a lot :lol

Not being able to decode high bitrate video would kinda contradict what sony is going for here, which is why im not suprised by this "news"

On several occasions, Amir supported DM's ramblings while he was still able to post on AVS...

Sony wasn't due to make an announcement, but the BDA announced the new format partner as Sun Microsystems. There have been announcements from MGM also, and Warner re. European releases, and I think some new Disney titles for the end of the year are expected to be announced. It's all in the OT thread :)

That might have something to do with the whole solution being tacked on, instead of being engineered to support it from the inception.

Thank you gofreak,I'm going to take a look in the Ot zone.

Forgot to mention about Kingdom of Heaven

KINGDOM OF HEAVEN (Director's Cut): To accommodate the full 3 hour and 42 minute run time of Ridley Scott's Director's cut version of his epic masterpiece, KINGDOM OF HEAVEN is one of the industry's first dual-layer BD releases and is authored in HDMV presented with DTS HD Lossless Master Audio.

KLee will be happy.

I think you are getting amir confused with deadmeat

I only recall Amir saying that it was difficult to get AVC decoding done on the 360 CPU and that he would be surprised if Sony were able to do it easily

There is a different Microsoft employee that worked on iHD for HD-DVD who suggested Cell couldn't decode AVC I think based on calculations derived from IBM's MPEG-2 numbers but his numbers were debunked

I'd like to see a source of Amir claiming the PS3 can't decode AVC

Kingdom of Heaven DR cut is supposed to make the movie ALOT better reading all of the reviews. Much, much more character development and better reasoning for various choices seen in the movie.

Is it confirmed if that movie will have the AVC codec?

Did he say anything along the lines of "Oh but it'd decode AVC fine, because its programmed by angels"? I think I remember the thread.

They didn't mention the codec in their press release but I believe this one will be MPEG2 video @ ~25-30MBit/s and DTS HD Master Audio.

Pretty damn bad decision not going with AVC from the get go but I guess all companies will start using it as standard around the time the year shifts.

I'd love - again - to know what was actually in their invites to suggest that, but as I said in the last thread on this, I think at most we could expect an announcement re. titles and marketing for Blu-ray around PS3's launch. We've already had MGM/Fox announcements of releases that pivot around the PS3 launch (with both explicitly saying that they're targetting the PS3 purchaser - they obviously see PS3's launch as the real beginning for BD), and perhaps Sony Pictures will announce titles for around PS3's launch too..

Kingdom of Heaven is one of the few fils I would consider buying as I enjoyed it in cinema (and I could profit to see if Blue-Ray is worth, is not like I see lot of films, but it would be nice to check how crisp it is in my Bravia).

He didn't say it can't, just that he thinks it will be a major challenge. He also mentions encoding instead of decoding, so I don't know exactly where he's going with this:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=8286187&&#post8286187

I don’t know what article is and where it came from. But my statement is not FUD. My team is an expert in MPEG-4 AVC (we chaired the standards group that created and have patents in it). We just went through what it takes to optimize it on a game console, with multiple cores and GPU. Remember that BD format has higher bandwidth than HD DVD so the job is much tougher than it was for us to decode AVC. We also know a lot about PS3 -- more than most people. Given what we know, we think it is a major challenge. Didn't say impossible, but major challenge.

If you think it is not a challenge, then please provide valid technical data. Getting unhappy about the issue doesn’t add to the discussion.

Question has been put to insiders to answer if PS3 can encode full rate AVC. No answer has come back. Granted, we don't have Sony people here but some of the BD insiders are quick to back and defend PS3 strategy and architecture on many other subjects. And their Sony contacts are one email away. But are quiet here.

Since Sony has not even shown any commercial BD disc playing on PS3 using any codec, the doubt remains. Of course, they could stop all of this and make a simple statement and demonstration. And that would be it. But they have not yet.

The transfer on Kingdom of Heaven is really spectacular. I've seen it on HBO-HD, and i can only assume the Blu-Ray version will be even better.

(when's FIGHT CLUB coming to blu-ray!?!)

am i missing it? where does the article say anythign about ps3?

i thikn the ps3 has blu ray limitations that are specific to ps3, arent they?

Do you actually want conformation, though?

I could easily whip out an SCEI press release that states PS3 can play Dual Layer BD-ROM disks but somehow I don't think that would satisfy the disbelivers anyway....

I wrote that again, sry I didnt know teh internet belonged to you and I didnt meet its standards ..

I dont care about decoding high bitrate AVC, I just need assurance that it will play back BD50s fine. Thats all. So far I dont see anything in this thread even remotely close to tying the information with the PS3. However most of the guys here are obsessed with people like Deadmeat/amirm and dont even bother to post on topic. sigh.

Yes any confirmation direct or indirect will be quite helpful. :)

Given the fact that Fox is releasing these titles in direct synch with the Playstation 3, do you honestly think that the PS3 won't be able to play them?

The point is that your portraying the OP's post like he was providing confirmation, when in fact he was asking if we have confirmation yet. When you asked "Where do they confirm this?", you obviously missed the point of the thread in the first place.

How fast is the BD drive in the PS3? I thought It couldn't read up to even 25Kb/s, so how would it manage a film running at ~30Kb/s? ...Legitimate question.

Amirm is the king of FUD @ avsforums....everyone knows that :)
Well that's too brutal. He's a VP of a next-gen-HD division of Microsoft, and is a very good viral marketer. I mean he is really, really GOOD(TM). You need to go through the avsforums archives to see how a top-notch viral marketer operates. If he was a GAF member half-a-year ago, he would have been perma-banned for open bull**** to the community. But with the edge HD-DVD has over BD now(for the time being) to the AV-enthusiasts, there are less 'doubtful statements' coming from him now (no need - for now).

There is a lot of good info from him though, he is a VP of a MS division after all. However you need to learn to filter out stuff...

Granted there is one marketer for BD as well, but he seems more on the software side, so not much good info from the guy. And he really can't handle the marketing as good as Amirm can.

Personally I root for posts from kjack and Tom McMahon. Both are insiders and are neutral to the warring formats - since both formats need to purchase from them. I recalled several months back when Tom pointed out Amirm was "misleading" the forum community, then both got into a public argument there. After that they no longer 'talk to one another directly' on the board anymore.

Its a 2x drive (72Mbps). Blu-Ray movies require 54Mbps transfer speed.

Coincidence? BD50s are not mature yet, current roadmaps have them mature by then. If they were mature by Dec 2006, would that mean PS3 would not play them? I dont see the release of certain codec/titles around launch equating to PS3 will or will not be able to play them.

I read this a couple of days back and I hope it gets resolved.

http://www.thedigitalbits.com/mytwocentsa126.html#oh
And get this: Sony STILL can't get their 50GB dual-layered Blu-ray Discs to work right on the existing and prototype players. The current Samsung player, as shipped, will not play them.
What I think does not matter as my wishful thinking always gets the better of me. A direct/indirect confirmation would make me a very happy camper.

Its part of the Blu-Ray spec to be able to read multiple layers. Yeah, the going-news is that dual-layer BD-ROM are having a hard time ramping up, but there's already dual-layer recordable media for sale at retail.

The Samsung drive that's already available will be getting a firmware update this year to enable dual-layer playback.

On the defensive already? You clearly missed the point of the thread, not just exemplified by the way you quoted a question as a statement but in how you basically asked the same question yourself.
