Here is the methodology behind the survey and rankings (there's also a bunch of videos where they explain the rankings):

http://www.usnews.com/news/best-countries/articles/methodology

Behind a country’s wealth and success are the policies that create possibilities, the people that drive the effort and the history that shapes the environment and perspective.

Globalization has expanded a country’s presence beyond its physical borders, and the 2016 Best Countries rankings seek to understand a nation’s worth beyond hard metrics.

The 2016 Best Countries report and rankings are based on how global perceptions define countries in terms of a number of qualitative characteristics, impressions that have the potential to drive trade, travel and investment and directly affect national economies. Sixty nations were measured in the inaugural report.

I'd love to visit germany again - last time I went I was 11 and I don't think I had the capacity to appreciate it. Although it is the first time I saw boobs (accidentally took a family walk through a clothing optional park or something, I don't know).

Nice to see Canada in 2nd place - here's hoping that we can do a bit better financially in the upcoming years. Damn that US dollar and Oil valuation, fucking us pretty thoroughly.

*sigh*

Indeed

I've been in 8 of those, living in one of them at the moment. Nice. :)

Ehh, I'm not confident that our economy might improve unfortunately. If Trudeau is anywhere near the level of the crapshow that his Liberal friends in Ontario are, then we are screwed. You would have to be something pretty special in terms of incompetence to run Ontario as shitty as they have so far. Games rumored to go up to 85-89$ once again, hitting that 100$+ mark with tax. :( I just raised CAN prices at my work online compared to our US prices for one of the websites, difference is 20-25% raise on the Canadian products that were already about 20% more expensive than the US counterpart. Our economy is :o

'US' News. It would be unbecoming to put yourself in the top 3 even if you're obviously the best. Nah, best to let others have some shine as well. Way to go America.

Countries where you get mugged in broad daylight and people go "welp, that's how things go around here. Shit I should hide my phone and necklace before somebody spots me with it" don't deserve to be top 20 on any list. Brazil *ehem*

Not even top 3, we suuuck. Canada stays winning though...time to move(?)

Honestly, if you were American, you really should think about immigrating bringing your money in and converting it. You would get close to doubling your assets and live in a better country (assuming you aren't a Republican because this country wouldn't be a fit for you).

All the dollar fear is less about the job economy (as that's actually rebounding healthily with the lower dollar) and more just increase cost in import goods and traveling. There's a surplus of jobs happening right now in cities like Vancouver which should help drive up salaries over the year to balance the increased cost of things like video games, food not made in Canada, etc.

But for people stuck in their current role or working for a company that doesn't sell to the US, it will hurt them. New jobs will be driving up salaries though.

Plus unless you live in cities like NY and San Fran, the salaries you get in Canada are higher then what you are used to. Of course cost of living is more then you're used to too.

I just can not believe the UK is 3rd!

This country is shit

It's funny, I know so many people from the UK who hate it and want to move to the US or elsewhere. But the UK is one of my favorite countries I've visited. I guess the perspective is very different when you live somewhere. :p

US news is a traitor.

I'm actually shocked US is in top 10, let alone top 5.

Despite what Gaf tells you, the US is quite awesome in a lot of ways.

Complaining is one of our national pastimes.

Yeah my company is doing Banana's with the dollar difference. We're a software consultancy and Canadian companies who would often consult with US companies are now staying local, and US companies who want to consult but save some money, are coming to us.

The missus and I were recently discussing our next vacation spot. I was already pushing Germany; I can use this list to my advantage. :P

No kidding. I don't think I've never met a Brit who had a nice word to say about their country or their politics when it happened to come up and I spent a good amount of time in Britain...granted, most of that time was spent in Scotland, so...
