Resident Evil 5 is so good

I'm on a huge RE kick right now, thanks to the HD remasters of REmake and Zero. This led to me following the texture mod progress on RE4, which in turn led me to replaying RE5. I'm hoping to show both REmake and RE5 to a non-gaming friend, playing the latter in co-op. I figure these two do a good job showing the different extremes of this series. :-)

Unfortunately, my save data for RE5 was corrupted when my old PS3 went belly up. The upside to this is I'm playing RE5 from scratch on Veteran difficulty — no supplies, no upgraded gear. Aside from the impossibly difficult Ndesu battle (turret fight against El Gigante), it's VERY well-balanced.

I'm actually scrounging for supplies and running on fumes half the time, which is refreshing since I don't usually do this in action RE. Defending Sheva on torchlight duty and then surviving the mob in the mines was a harrowing affair. And the battle against the bat/silkworm boss took a while. Fun stuff!

My appreciation for this game continues to grow. Maybe it's the benefit of time and distance from the narrative at the time ("It's not RE4!"). Looking at RE5 with fresh eyes, I feel it does a good job with contrast. You have quiet moments searching for supplies and soaking up details, punctuated by light skirmishes with two or three enemies at a time. Then you have the large-scale set-pieces that feel like frantic mosh pits. They occur with back-and-forth regularity, but it's a good balance that keeps things fresh.

Also, I appreciate the focus on environmental hazards — power boxes you can shoot down, walls you can destroy, oil slicks you can set on fire — and the wide variety of context-sensitive melee attacks.

And while not as gloomy as RE4's Spain, Africa is a unique setting with manmade environs that feel lived-in and natural spaces that feel, well, natural. Exploring the wetland with the hovercraft is one of my favorite scenarios in the series. Even though it's in broad daylight, the cloudy skies over the croc-infested swamp create an unsettling atmosphere. At the same time, it's cozy! Maybe that's the fond association I have with exploring in co-op?

(Also gives me an excuse to quote Van Damme's Guile from the Street Fighter II movie: "Imma git on dis boot; Imma gonna go down writher...")

RE5 Wesker is also the best villain the series has ever had. Steals every scene he's in — and he has plenty of scenes! So many memorable quotes, delivered with cheesy bombast. So many well-choreographed fight scenes — throwing his sunglasses to a befuddled Chris and then Matrix-ing our heroes to the ground being my favorite. He's like Neo and Agent Smith rolled into one. I adore RE5 Wesker.

The game also gave us BSAA Jill and Battle Suit Jill, two designs I really like. Chris is also the best he's ever been. A lovable lug with a heart of gold. Endearingly dopey and random with his social commentary on capitalism at the start of the game (wait for about five minutes at the onset of 1-1). Also, the character models and animation are amazing. The subtle facial expressions and body language, the way skin glistens with a sheen of sweat. The cinematography, lighting, and color correction should also be noted. This game still looks incredible.

Oh, and the soundtrack! "Winds of Madness" and other pieces are RE's equivalent of Star Wars' "Duel of the Fates." Orchestral pieces that actually stand out with distinct melodies, giving the game a tone and texture that sets it apart in the series.

Single-player is perfectly solid, but the game becomes transcendent in co-op. One of my all-time favorite multiplayer memories is removing Jill's mind-control device with a magnum at point-blank range while my friend restrained her. Delicate surgery, indeed! RE5 is possibly the best co-op game I've ever played. A riot in Mercs, too.

Oh! And the figure gallery! The best it's ever been in the series. I was disappointed how the gallery in RE6 was set in a dark garage where you could hardly see the models. Here they're well-lit and easy to see. Helps me appreciate the finer detail, like the corpses on Ndesu's loincloth.

Now I just need to unlock everything... again. I tried downloading a 100% save file but it didn't work. I think save files might be tied to PSN accounts? That might explain why the game still prompted me to create save data. Guess I'm gonna have to do this the hard way, but that's fine. Game doesn't feel like work when it's this fun. :-)

People were disappointed with RE5 because RE4 was such a paradigm shift, but it is still very solid regardless.

I know people keep telling me RE6 has merit to it as well, but I dunno, might need to give it another shot at some point.

I liked it more though I get why many would disagree.

I'm in the very vocal minority on this one, but Amen to that.

It's pretty alright in coop. But after obsessively following its progress since its initial teaser in 2005 I couldn't help but be disappointed in it overall, and I think a lot of people felt the same.

Still the best version of Mercs tho!!

Awesome game. I got all achievements completely solo. Never played coop.

...ouch

Yep, I enjoyed it playing with human coop.
AI coop is trash though

What who doesn't like No More Mr. Nice Guy or School's Out??

RE5 is the best co-op campaing game for me surpassing Halo. I'd go as far to say that RE5 might surpass 4 as a game when playing with a buddy.

That said it lacks stuff I'd hope from a RE experience for it.

Criminally underrated. It's not as good as RE4 (which is why people probably shit on it so much), but it's so much better than RE6. I would love for RE5 to get a remaster.

RE5 was a good game, it just had the impossible task of following RE4.

It was basically the FF8 of RE.

Underrated game imo. I think if it had come out later in the gen vs when it did a lot more people would have been more receptive to it's cooperative oriented focus than otherwise would have been. It's probably my favorite multi-player game of all time, honestly.

And I totally agree about wesker. Cheese ball wesker is best wesker, and the VA totally nailed that roll.

Yeah I liked it
the weapon upgrade system was not as good as 4
nor was the enemies/stage design (especially in the later stages)

RE4 still king
RE6 second place
RE5 # 3

I should add, RE6 probably has the best combat mechanics once you master them, and they shine brilliantly like a thousand suns in Mercs. But I have no desire to replay any of its campaigns. Whereas I'm always down to replay a level in RE5.

For that reason I'd say RE5 is overall the better and more balanced game. But I appreciate all of them. :-)

RE6 is better to me because at least that game knows what it is.

The most memorable things from RE5: that shitty fucking turret boss and punching rocks. Not a good look. At least in RE6 I can do front flips and slide into cover. Fully embracing the stupidity is the only way to go since it's a summer blockbuster action series and not a horror series.

I played the shit out of this when it came out. Solo, coop, multiplayer, got most of the collectibles, etc. Great game.

Probably one of the best examples of "great game, but not that great X series game". Sure, it's just a shooter and even less of a horror game than RE4 - but damn, it's an awesome shooter and actually one of the best one of that generation.

And I didn't like Sheva and her AI much, but still had loads of fun.

One of the only games I platinumed. I had a blast with it. Co-op is great... Sheva AI is some of the worst shit ever in gaming though.

I've been on a massive RE binge the last few months.

Went from only doing RE5 ever to:

Beat Revelations 1
Beat Rev 2
Beat RE4
Played a good chunk of RE6 then ditched it (this game is dog shit in a lot of ways)
Beat REmake.
Working on RE0 now.

Fantastic franchise. I would say right now my favorite is tied between REmake and Revelations 2.

I'm excited to see how RE2 Remake pans out. I hope we get RE7 this year too.

My favorite Resident Evil. Played co-op with my wife several times, and we had fun every single playthrough.

One of the best times I ever had in Co-op

My cousin and I laughed so many times
Seriously. I had a blast and it was solid gun porn too.

Never played RE4 though so I'm not claiming its better or even a halfway decent follow-up, just that it was a great time, solo and co-op.

RE5 is a horrible, awful, horrendous, insult of a Resident Evil game.

... It's also the best time I've had with my roommate. It's a hysterical, joyous, laugh-a-minute thrill ride that's an absolutely blast in co-op.

I both hate it for being the total opposite of what a "good' Resident Evil game should be, while loving it as one of the most nutty, incomprehensibly silly co-op shooters ever made.

If you accept it for what it is then yes it a fantastic game. I really enjoy it. It only ever becomes disappointing if you want more of Resident Evil 4. I have been on the Resident Evil 5 defence force since the first demo on the 360 and PS3. I really love that game.

Yeah, I really do like Resi 5, in co-op it was a real blast. Certainly not as good solo though. The mercenaries mode is great fun too.

RE 5 is a fantastic co-op action game but the Lost in Nightmares DLC was the cherry on top. Playing that on Professional is nerve-racking since one hit can almost kill you or your partner.
I...I think i'm going to boot up my PS3 and create a session on the DLC...

I played it solo and enjoyed it a lot although by the time the credits rolled i remember i asked myself "was that really a Resident Evil game?"

Who would have known that RE6 was going to deviate even further from the series roots...

I agree it's probably the least "RE" title in the series, at least in terms of overall tone (daylight! explosions!). I also agree it's an absolute blast to play.

In fairness to its heritage, though, it pays respect with lots of fan service. Chris, Jill, Wesker... Lots of cool stuff happening here with our favorite characters. :-)

RE5 felt more like a Diablo-esque loot game in the best way, especially with coop. Looking for items, and upgrading them with a partner for survival made playing through the whole game a great experience.

it's also interesting that people said having a partner with you all the time took away tension but RE0 did that first and people didn't really hate on it that much for it.

Pretty much

RE6 says "fuck it, let's go all in" and i loved it for that tbh

RE5 is currently up there for one of the worst RE games ever It's worse than RE4 in every way that matters. It suffers from constant combat that also happens to have little to no improvement from RE4 with some miserable encounter and level design.

It also has some just poor changes like the absence of puzzles and changes to the inventory.

Toped off with the atmosphere that has no tension at all and it's also a very short game.

Note the lost in nightmare dlc was ok.

W-w-w-w-wh-h-hat? Resident "Gears of Left 4 Vanquish Dead of Duty: Among Thieves" Evil 6 knows what it is? That game is the poster child of game design schizophrenia. Not trying to mock, just really shocked to see that sentence.

Resident Evil 5 is at least basically "RE4 with co-op" and not much else.

Uh, re0 got quite it's fair share of shit piled on it back in the day, to be fair :p

I only ever played it in coop. My friend (who wasn't even a big RE fan, i.e. unbiased) and me had the most fun laughing at how bad this game was, plus how dumb the locations and enemies got. Killing ourselves during that laser puzzle was fun too.

This... does not compute. So because you can do more moves RE6 knows what it is? RE6 was panned for having an identity crisis across the board. I'd say RE5 is precisely what you're saying it's not. It has full blown big dumb action all over the place and completely embraces its stupidity, just look at Irving or Wesker. Or Excella. Or... well everything.

Haha, I love RE6, but this is so true :-)

I disliked it, especially with how they downgraded Wesker to the level of a James Bond Villain. Let alone this...

I loved it. Played the demo many, many times and played through the entire game in co-op multiple times with different friends (both online and offline). Great game.

I wish it had more bosses though. :(

Also, that turret section with El Gigante was hard as hell.
