Overview:
-For the new progression system, you have an infinite global level-up system that works like Paragon Levels in Diablo 3. Playing any hero puts experience into the same level-up bar.
-As you level up, you unlock things like portrait borders and character portraits, and you also get loot crates.
-Each loot crate has at least four cosmetic items in it. These include skins, emotes, new voice-over lines, sprays, and more.
-You can crunch duplicate loot items for credits which you can use to buy cosmetics directly.
-All loot crate items are purely cosmetic.
-Eventually you'll be able to buy loot crates for real money, but at launch that system most likely won't be ready.
-The new mode is a King of the Hill type game mode, but modified to fit Overwatch better. It's a best of three system where there is only one control point at a time, and whoever gets to two first wins.
-There are two new maps for this mode.
-You can also have custom games where you can change all sorts of settings either for competitive minded events (think character limits) or just to make the game more unusual (think an All Genji mode).
-There is also now a Versus AI mode.
-There are a bunch of other beta improvements like the spectator camera and balancing and etc.
-They're working on things like ranked play, but they might not be in for launch.
-As is probably obvious, it's a service game and will be updated continually based on fan feedback and their own objectives.

Here's some of the cosmetic items:

Didnt like the modes in the closed beta, so i hope this new mode will be more up my alley.

I also hope they fixed performance.

I'm not a fan of micro-transactions in full priced titles.

Not a fan of the pictured cosmetics, but I'm sure there will be a lot of variety.

does anybody know what kind of servers will this have on consoles?
dedicated or p2p?

it will be my main selling point.

I'm not familiar with those systems, so that might very well be.

basically you earn enough points from matches (more points for winning and skill-based stuff). once you hit a certain number or a certain milestone, you get a free chest you can open for free RNG cosmetics.

you can also buy a chest for the same RNG cosmetics you would have earned over time.

you don't need a key or anything to open the chests.

Why does this bother me?

-Eventually you'll be able to buy loot crates for real money

it shouldn't. You use credits to buy additional crates, you get credits from duplicate items or just from the crate. You get crates from leveling your profile, no cap as far as i know of. right now you can get everything in the game just by playing it enough.

Would be better if it was f2p, and then have that microtransaction system, like TF2 and Dota 2. Kinda dumb to pay full price for a multiplayer only game AND have microtransactions on top of it..

Ah well, the gaming world we live in I suppose :(

some people felt the game was boring and pointless by itself, so they added some progression/loot system
if it's just cosmetic, it's not a big deal

if it was free to play, then it would almost certainly be pay to win instead of just cosmetic

since i don't care about cosmetics, i still feel the game is boring and pointless unless you manage to gather a team and play competitively.
i just cant see myself enjoying payload compared to the matches in enemy territory / tribes ctf / natural selection / quake ctf

Plenty of people buy shooters just for MP every year, so people may as well get over that. A campaign, microtransactions; including or not including anything to satisfy some false principle is stupid.

Buy it, if you want it. Don't, if you don't. *shrug*

Can't read the article at work, but what's a "spray?"

Is it just like a "shader" in Destiny? Or is it what they're calling alternate costumes i.e. skins?

Its not full price, its 40 bucks. And launch will not have microtransactions. And when they do, it will be to buy crates for a chance at what you want. EVERYTHING is available to everyone. How is this not the best system?
Will you be able to buy skins outright or will it be a random roll for everything?

You can earn credits from crates or duplicate items to buy the item of your choosing.

Right out the gate, they seem to be tripping up on the "keep the silhouette of your character consistent" philosophy. That Hanzo barely reads as Hanzo.

Other two look fine tho.
