Todd Howard: Fallout 4 sold more digitally than at retail on day one

Gameinformer
GI: I was in your studio 25 days before Fallout 4 released, and it was very much the calm before the storm. Talk me through the game’s launch.

TH: It was pretty amazing in retrospect. I think you lose a little perspective when making games, and you’re happy that it got done. You hope that when it comes out, it’s really good, and sells like crazy. That’s what’s in your head. One of the things that is amazing: Fallout 4 sold more day one digitally than at retail. That’s a big change.
Related to this, the game shipped 12 million copies worldwide for launch day alone.

Lock if old.

I guess I was a part of that. I buy most games digitally nowadays. Mostly to keep myself from trading stuff in and regretting it later on down the line.

I guess this means digital price gouging in EU will never end. Steam is going to stay 50% more expensive than retail, console stores around 15-25% more.

Presumably the bulk of the digital sales were on PC. Probably still did well digitally on consoles, but I imagine more than 50% of console sales were discs.

Edit: Particularly given how much more expensive digital console games are than physical copies in many regions.

that or we could get a weird situation where digital pricing goes lower in the us due to higher sales but stays high in the eu because people dont want to pay outrageous prices

Thank god we have Steam refunds nowadays.

true but you only have 2 hours to make that call and that does nothing for xbox or psn sales

Some people will not be able to accept this. Digital is the future sadly. People will be dragged kicking and screaming, some poeple might quit gaming etc but it will be the future, and the younger generation will just accept it.
Im all in I dont need plastic tat

once collectors editions contain digital codes im all in :)

How can you guys even afford to buy so much digitally?
At least in the UK, the digital prices on PSN are absolutely forkin disgraceful.

For me Fallout 4 was the first game I bought physically in the last couple of years for PC simply because for some reason the local store had it for 40% cheaper than Steam. Games are much cheaper here physically but I usually still go digital because for convenience and it's not too much of a difference (it depends, can be anything from 10-15% cheaper to 30-40%), but for Fallout 4 it was just a way better deal.

Third party code stores with PC games. You can get keys for the majority of new release AAA games for $40 at launch. And after launch stuff like the new Tomb Raider is already $17 I think.

Green Man Gaming was selling CD keys for the game for a little over $40 but I imagine GMG sales make up a very small percentage of PC sales.

GMG might be a minority, but I'm sure CD key sellers make up a big chunk as a whole. TW3 sold as much on GoG as it did on Steam (if not slightly more) and that's because places like GMG were selling gog keys.

Digital is only *part* of the future. Not the whole future. Discs aren't going away anytime within the next few decades, just like DVDs and Blu-rays haven't and won't.

I bought digitally and I never regretted it so much, because I really, really wanted to return this game.

PC must have contributed a lot to that but our digital overlords are here to stay.

You know what I've come to realise is us forum gamers can be a frugal lot.
I think a lot of casual players now just want the ease/convenience of downloads and they've been nicely conditioned to do so thanks to Apple and Android.

Weird side story, I listen to this Arsenal podcast by a 40 something bloke (far far removed from being a hardcore gamer) and all through 2015 the guy was buying shit like Bloodborne/Fallout 4/Fifa 16 all off PSN because he couldn't be arsed to go to a store to just save an extra 10 quid.

I suspect they are many out there like him.

Welcome to digital :-).

Not ideal but Steam has a no questions asked policy on refunds when it comes to purchases with less than two hours of playtime and two weeks old or less. I think if you email support, they're flexible with it.

In the case of a game like Fallout, it's not ideal because two hours is not nearly enough time to try before you buy.
