im kidding. I was never out

but holy god damn shit yeesssssss

this is what I wanted 2 to be. I thought that without some big changes to the formula the next entry at this continued pace would be a bit hollow, or tiring

but between they obviously teasing Terror from the Deep, and The Council gettin fucked by the Advent, they pulled me right back in

Terror from the Deep took place in 2040 (2 takes place in 2035), and the repercussions from it actually fall more in line with what already happens in 2 and the Advent

I wonder where they'll go, but it sure as hell it'll be deep down below

Terror from the Deep was awful. Really hoping this is just a red herring and the next installment ignores the ocean...

even tho you are wrong and your opinion is bad :p

it aint like Firaxis' crack at that concept will be anything like the original game in anything other than possibly plot and maybe name

I think they could take some cues from TFTD, but remove most of what made that game inferior to the original game. I didn't hate TFTD, but it's underwater theme was a lot less relatable than its surface version.

hmmm.

I'm sure someone thought it would be a really significant change in the concept, fighting in undersea bases and on the surface of the ocean floor though. even though we air breathing surface dwellers probably can't relate in general.

I feel like it's more likely they just go hard on Lovecraftian alien horrors (the Cthonic Elder God type things the Elders are on the run from) from a completely fresh angle, rather than crabmen and lizards and such.

Expecting more full space horror with a Cthulhu theme than fish this time around. More akin to Mass Effect's Reapers than Innsmouth's Deep Ones.

If the stability/design of the interior levels in the first two games are any indicator, the idea of undersea facility combat makes me worried

Terror of the Deep was the best X-Com IMO. This will not happen though the director said he disliked TOTD and didn't even play it for long as he saw it as an inferior version of X-Com.

The idea of TftD was fantastic - aliens having been with us for millenia, slumbering in the deep... the ocean, hostile and alien an environment as outer space... the Cthulhu Mythos flavour... - but the game was too punishing and missions were extended to the point of frustration.

A fresh eye on the themes and setting with a better balanced game design could make for something quite special.

I don't really care for TFTD. Maybe that's inextricable from the brutal experience of playing TFTD as a pre-teen, but I also just don't like the aesthetic.

If XCOM if gonna be to Firaxis what Civ currently is, then I would expect sequels to be spaced out with a couple of major expansions in the middle.

I think (and personally hope) the next full XCOM game is going to be another reboot in terms of the settings and theme, not mechanics and gameplay because those are excellent for the most part. We'll be back to modern day earth, fighting ETs in the suburbs, farms, downtown back alleys and what have you. They'll just need to figure out how to make the superior mobile Geoscope from XCOM 2 work in a world that is not fully invaded yet, because I really liked the choices and sacrifices you had to make with each decision.

It's a cool concept but, fucking shit fuck lobstermen terror missions, and fuck cruise ships in general.

Regardless of their actual plan, they have to be enough fans of the original games to know that an underwater tease -would- draw comparisons for the fans.

It's either intentionally a tease, or intentionally a red herring. There's no way they could have sat through putting that together, looking at the finished product and thought to themselves "yup, no one's going to link this to TFTD".

i don't know why people think they were teasing terror from the deep....to me it just seemed like they were implying that the avatar was still alive

exactly

the "avatar is still alive" idea could have been done a number of other ways

they even adressed TftD when people were asking about the sequel to Enemy Unknown

gunna cop out and just quote myself from the OT, sans spoiler tags.

I think mechanically, TFTD really didn't bring anything new to the table. It's pretty much a 90s version of a COD reskin. If a potential TFTD were in the works and brought as much change as XCOM -> XCOM2, or heck, XCOM -> EW, I think the premise itself holds enough creative opportunities to be something special, because a lot of deep sea life is already freaking scary to begin with. XCOM 2 already breaks a lot of molds which XCOM EU held fast on 'out of respect for the classic', so I don't see why a fully reimagined TFTD couldn't work.

But hey, throw me in the camp who wants to hop straight to Apocalypse which I think is an even more awesome premise, both in terms of location and scenario. Even though the ADVENT cities are enemy territory rather than friendly, the premise of XCOM 2 is kinda already 33% of the way there, not to mention the final mission being going through a portal to an 'alien dimension', similar to Apocalypse, notwitstanding that it actually ended up being under the sea.

The more I think about it, the more I think it -can- be pulled off. Heck, even XCOM 2's geoscape plays differently from XCOM's geoscape. There's no reason to be shackled to making TFTD a carbon copy of X-COM a second time with water and land flipped around.

Agreed. If they make an overarching canon that keeps going on and on from the aftermath of Enemy Unknown and 2, they seriously risk making XCOM a parody of itself and/or becoming the very same insanity as the UFO: AfterKusoge series.

I mean, I'll take an XCOM 3 that properly tackles Apocalypse, but after that the clock needs to be set backwards a few hours ala Interceptor (Why does noone talk about that game?)

I wonder if Firaxis would even consider swappin the geoscape for mega primus

I didnt particularly like it but its the type of change a third entry would need. It did back then.

I have the least memories about Apocalypse for some reason

Alternate history XCOM.

With the robot suits from Silent Storm.

O boy.

Man, this really makes me want X-Com 2 to have a Wolfenstein: The New Order overhaul mod.

Like its 1946 and shits already fucked, but you capture the German tech and use it for yourself and fight back.

Necrobump!

Having just finished 2, put me in the camp that the ending was a pretty forward nod to Terror from the Deep. All it was missing was an alien hand reaching out from the chasm like the boxart to solidify it IMO.
As weird TFTD was, I believe there's enough modern convention to make it a worthy third entry in the reboot line.

Or just skip to Apocalypse, I'm down for either.
