TTP

Have a fun! Enjoy!
Man, I'm having a blast. Oh, and the "Homeworld-like" background music is so fitting.

EDIT: Oops images perhaps too big. fixed.

Reminds me of this movie

Yep, Introversion.

And of course it reminds of WarGames. It's inspired by that movie. I feel so Mattew Broderick playing this game :lol

I'd SO buy this on XBLA for $20. Frankly, though, it's very likely I'll buy it regardless.

Honestly, this game NEEDS a mouse. I can see it on Wii, but the low resolution of that machine would hurt this beauty a lot.

WTH, HOW are you able to play this, the game isn't supposed to be out for another 10 days!!

I want to play it toooooo!!!

It's the review code.

BTW, look at this mode :lol

Office mode
DEFCON will run in a Window with no Sound, and in real-time for no more than 6 hours. If the boss appears press Esc twice to hide the Window. Doulble click on the DEFCON taskbar icon to resume command of your country!

I just pre-ordered this bad boy the other day, and it occured to me: I have absolutely no idea how it plays. Like, what is it? RTS? Turn based? Do you have to accumulate resources? Do you start flinging nukes from the get go or is that a last 2 minutes of the game thing? Are there units that can move around? I see planes and ships and stuff in those screens.

What is Defcon?

:(

But the wait will be worth it.

The music.... man I hope I can somehow rip the OST onto my iRiver. That way if I'm walking and bombs start dropping, it'll be... almost poetic.

RTS?
yep

Turn based?
No

Do you have to accumulate resources?
No. You are a given a set of different types of units and you have to stick with it.

Do you start flinging nukes from the get go or is that a last 2 minutes of the game thing?
Yeah. You can launch nukes when you get to DEFCON 1. There is a countdown.

Are there units that can move around? I see planes and ships and stuff in those screens.
Yep.

I'll quote the manual cos I'm lazy:

DEFCON is a multi-player strategic game of thermonuclear war, where you assume the role of a military leader in charge of one of six world territories.

Protect and survive
The common aim in DEFCON is to wipe out the population and units of other territories whilst protecting your own. All games start with the placement of ground and sea units and as the DEFCON level escalates, more and more deadly attack options become available, until DEFCON 1 whereupon you can launch your nuclear missiles. A game of DEFCON ends with a victory timer, giving players 45 game minutes to carry out any remaining attacks, before the scores are tallied and the player with most points is declared winner.

[...]

When a game is started, you must first place your units. Units must be placed within your
territory, and once placed, land based units can’t be moved. Naval units are placed within groups called fleets, which can be moved after placement. Air units are launched from ground or naval units. Each game starts with a finite number of units, and once destroyed, units cannot be replaced.

Unit Involvement
Naval units and silos are smart enough to defend themselves against enemy units automatically, allowing you to focus on a high level strategy. However, if you wish to engage enemy naval units, you will need to issue orders to units in your fleets. Air units behave differently and will auto attack other air units and naval units.

Sphere of Attack
In DEFCON, airborne units are limited by range. You will see a red circle on the map when issuing orders to a unit, which shows its maximum attack range. Meanwhile a blue circle shows the maximum fuel range of aircraft, and if you send an aeroplane beyond its fuel range, it will crash and you will lose the unit.

About Defcon levels

The DEFCON level
DEFCON stands for DEFence CONdition, and the DEFCON level dictates what can happen at any point in the game according to the table below.

DEFCON 5
No hostile actions. Can move naval units within international waters

DEFCON 4
Radar coverage will provide information on enemy units within range

DEFCON 3
Can no longer place units.
Can engage enemy units in naval and airborne combat

DEFCON 2
Continued and more aggressive hostile actions

DEFCON 1
Nuclear attacks allowed

What is Defcon?

IS awesome.

This is a game I can walk into a store and buy?

I'm in an RTS mood these days no thanks to Company of Heroes.

I'm definitely a nostalgia-driven gamer and really liked Wargames as a kid for some reason.

Dabney Coleman was Jack Flak!

Eventually it'll be available at retail, but if you want it ASAP, you'll have to buy it from either Steam or Introversion's online store, download it, and then patiently wait 10 days for it to be unlocked.

EDIT: I am weak and just bought it on Steam for $10.

BOUGHT a few days ago, waiting on the day, for then I will kill all of Gattsu's people.

ooo-face homeworld like music.

pure sex!!

i'll hopefully be playing with some of you guys within the first hour of release.

Damn you easy to purchase online and download within minutes games!

I wish it had the sound effects from 'wargames'. Just the sound of the bombs impacting...

They generally (as track record has shown) release the game on Windows/Linux/Mac and while I dunno if they'll get it out when the roadmap hopes, it should happen.

I just went trough a couple of online matches. Holy god how much I hate the Alliance mode. Basically, in this mode, players can ask other players to join in an alliance. I'm USA, you are Africa: we join, we see each other units on the map and we cannot fire to eachother. That's fine.

Problem is any allied country can decide to break the alliance anytime (GamerGuy, I'm talking to you :lol). This means you gotta check what the "friendly" guys are actually doing 'cos if they are ammassing fleets around your coasts rather than attacking the enemy (or just sending "weak" attacks) their intentions might not be good.

I lost a match cos I wasnt paying attention to what my ally was doing. I had already fired all my nukes to the opposing force (a Eurasia alliance) thinking he was doing the same but then my "ally" backstabs me braking the alliance and firing at me all the nukes he didn't spend for attacking the common enemy. He did this like 50secs before the timeout and won the match. :lol

Wont play this Alliance mode again unless I get a real friend by my side. :lol

Lol, I feel such a n00b.
