A sudanese soccer player for the Deinster SV (Germany) was attacked by racists on Saturday. On Tuesday, the team decided to show solidarity with the Sudanese team mate with a special Facebook post - the response has been overwhelming.

The special Facebook post was a picture of all team members in blackface.

Apparently the Sudanese player decided to quit soccer after the attack, but was convinced by the display of solidarity to not leave the team.

For the non-germans:

Black german football player Emad was physically attacked for his skin colour and wanted to end his career. The entire team than black faced a team photo digitally to show that they are all together as a unit.

Not to excuse the use of blackface, but it's way less controversial in Europe compared to the US. Zwarte Piet and what not.

Minor point, but all they did was digitally alter the photo. It's not like they "blacked up" with shoe polish or whatever.

At least that's what it says in the BBC version of the story.

Edit:

Damn you Chariot

Yeop, this is going to be bad.......

Americans kind of like to think everyone espouse their view on what constitutes racism based on their specific history with this sort of thing. This gesture is going to be really turned on its head.

Why are Europeans so racist? Like, how could they possibly think this was appropriate?
ALTHOUGH the team member liked their gesture and decided to stay on the team and that's all that really matters, isn't it?

That's one funny picture though.

It seems kind of misguided but I don't think it's fair to call this racist. Their hearts were in the right place.

Still a hilarious pic.

Now I gotta reexamine the picture of the Spain players doing the Asian eye thing to make sure they weren't just paying tribute to the one Asian player on the team.

They did it digitally. The photo is edited, they didn't physically apply the black face.
It is.

That makes it 100000000x times more cringeworthty o_o

Zero effort was made by anybody lol. The team showed solidarity by "allowing" a digital artist to darken their skin on photo shop lol

they are stating that they all are the same and sending out the message that any issues you have with one of them, you have with all

great message with an unfortunate application

The principle of face-colouring is known as "blackfacing" and is often associated with discrimination. In your case it was the opposite.
Exactly. When our coach told us about the idea we were interested and wanted to do it. On facebook we posted a comment so that everyone understood the meaning behind it. Nobody of us expected such huge media attention from this however.

Rough translation.

I knew that something was up by the way the thread title was worded, but I was not expecting photoshopped blackface.
