I mean this movie had a reason to do it related to how the whole movie is done as tasteless as it looks out of context.

There was a very clear story purpose to do that in Cloud Atlas, and it wasn't exclusive to just Asians at all

Like, they used the same actors for every scenario presented so when it was set in Asia they made everyone asian. They didn't replace asian actors with white actors and they didn't make fun of asian people using stereotypes.
What Cloud Atlas did isn't even close to blackface even if it might appear so with a still image out of context.

And men played women and women played men and Halle Berry was an old asian doctor. And an Asian woman played a white woman. As stated above it has context in the movie that it's the same soul over centuries.

It's the same people in multiple different instances of existence. In one instance he happened to be more Asian. You wouldn't know it was the same guy if they just got a different actor.

Yeah, Robert Downy Jr got away with blackface not that long ago. If it isn't coming from a place of ignorance and hate, and if it has a logical place in the story being presented, people are usually okay with it.

A very tongue-in-cheek view of method acting and improper cultural appropriation and poor casting choices. The whole film is a parody on blockbusters. RDJ actually being full-on Aryan kind of drove that point home.
