Why is PAC-MAN on PS4 834.2mb (and more questionable game sizes)

So I decided to give PAC-MAN a purchase on PSN only to find it accumulates to a little under a gigabyte. Nintendo's virtual console games also come to a considerable amount with Super Mario 64 on Wii U measuring in at 54mb compared to the N64 originals 6mb. Whats with the huge jump in memory? I understand PAC-MAN on PS4 has a few overlays and extras but hardly enough to justify its size.

On the flip side games like Super Mario 3D World only clock in at 1.7GB which is outstanding for a game of its visual polish and variation, so why is PAC-MAN only half the size of it?

In the case of Virtual Console games they have to bundle both the emulator, and the PDF style online manual with it as well. I'm not sure how high-res it is, but I'm sure that takes up space.

In Pac-Man PS4's case, that could explain some of it, but it does seem excessive. Maybe you have to include certain libraries and such with it too and they are huge, or perhaps there are some video files for credits or bonus features or something.

I would've figured its because you're downloading an emulator and the game. Or maybe you're downloading the complete emulator and all its games but its only granting you the license to play one of them? Those are my guesses.

Not sure about PSN, but for the Wii/WII U, I would think controller support would be an issue.

Some games need to be able to work with

Wiimote
Wiimote+Nunchuk
Classic Controller
Classic Controller Pro
Gamecube Controller

Also, as others have said. We're not just downloading the ROM, we're downloading the Emulator that goes with it specifically.

Thanks for the heads up on this. I was going to pick up all 4 of the Namco releases when I got home. I wonder if they have it set up like the Museum, where they all combine into one file? If not... 800MB+ for each Arcade Classic is pretty excessive for them OG graphics.

Multi-language audio tracks, uncompressed UHD videos, developer commentary, lossless FLAC OST and a plethora of dynamic themes for your PS4.

That didn't stop NES games on the Wii being a few megabytes - Super Mario 64 was roughly 12MB on the Wii - 4MB more than the rom itself. I don't know where the Wii U version got an extra 50MB. Let alone Pac Man on Xbox 360 being something like 20MB which included a GUI for the options, credits, leaderboards and now the PS4 version is 800MB bigger because?

they are different files.

Pac-Man is 838.1 MB.
Galaga is 828.2 MB.
Dig Dug is 828.2 MB.
Ms Pac-Man is 834.8 MB.

It's not trophies. There are games with trophies that are sub 100MB

Wait..pac man is on ps4??

Is the championship edition that was on ps3?

No, original arcade. Love that CEDX version on the PS3.

Only thing as to why it is large I can see is this...

This latest port comes with scanline and sound settings, and the option to play with the Round 256 bug - perfect for PAC-MANiacs!
Experience the masterpiece that charmed the planet!

Wonder if they were .iso rips with the added wrapper?

Instead of rendering Pacman eating the white dots, they've pre-rendered every single possible permutation of the game board in play. So 835 mb is actually pretty small.

I have no idea

You're treading a fine line here, OP...

i'm guessing like the space invaders collection on PS2 years ago it'll have a 3D arcade model maybe that's what takes up all the space

also op once you download it could you tell me if you can turn off the graphics that fill the space so you can have a black area where the game doesn't fit?

BTW, this is on the Credits section of each game, so apparently they are made on Unity? Maybe that's why makes them a large file? This shit is weird.
OOOOOKKKKK. Good thing you brought this up before I clicked purchase button, lol

So these are not even emulated but re-made or something? In unity? Yeah, I'll wait until someone else buys this first.

I'm almost afraid to ask, but are they rock solid 60FPS? No frame drops... ? Do they even feel like the originals?

It's classic Pac-Man (from 80s)

Oh god, I need to buy this.

Welp, noooooooo.

Guess it's packed with an incredibly oversized emulator like with the Xbone BC games (Which bloated Galaga XBLA's size from 1mb to 500mb)?

I know they are $3.99, but Pac-Man is one of my all time faves. I want to jump on all 4 games released, but I also want to know if the performance is solid as well.

You get a choice of those two but there doesn't seem too be any option to just turn off the overlays.

Theres also a few gameplay settings but nothing crazy:

Feels completely solid, I'm not a PAC-MAN expert but I can't notice a difference.
