Pachter: Doubtful Nintendo NX Will See Much Third-Party Western Support

Famed industry analyst, the one and only Michael Pachter, has discussed the Nintendo NX in his recent Pachter Factor episode on Siftd. Pachter, who is known for his criticism of Nintendo, is convinced that the Nintendo NX won’t get much third-party support outside of Japanese developers, but he does say this could change if the system proves to be a success with consumers. The Nintendo NX launches globally in March 2017.

“When last I looked, which was in the last three months, Nintendo has something like $10 billion in cash. I think that the worst case if the NX is a bust, they will lose half a billion,”

“Every time I have ever criticised that company and its management, including its late president, it wasn’t because they were running the company into the ground and about to go bankrupt. It was because I didn’t think they were generating enough profit on the phenomenal assets that they have. I’m not critical of these guys in the way that you should be worried.”

“As long as they keep producing great content – and they have never wavered – they’ll be fine. I just don’t think they are going to maximise their profits without having a good hardware strategy and a good software strategy.

“And, I frankly think that handhelds are challenged because mobile has become the way that most people play games, and console is challenged because they have been underpowered the last couple of generations and they are trying to be cute with these different kind of hybrid devices. Like, a GamePad instead of a controller, and nobody really liked it so the Wii U didn’t work. Their failure in hardware has cost them third-party support, because third-parties can’t afford to make a game for a 10 million install base Wii U that could be discontinued at any time.

“[With] the NX, I think you are going to see very low third-party support outside of Japan unless the thing is a hit. And so, I mean my criticism of them is just that they have squandered a big lead that they had in hardware and gone from first-to-worst, quickly, on the console side.”

What do you think, could the NX have low 3rd party support?

I don't believe it, I think Nintendo sure will put all their energy to get 3rd party support for the nx, even if they need to pay for it.

**Lock if old**

They will but from...

"Western"

Oh...yeah ok sure that's honestly believable. Don't think they'll pay much attention. I mean why port something when you could use that $$ to make more DLC?

Cant argue with that - he is right. Western publishers wont support the system unless its a success.
Nintendo cant get SE, Bamco, Capcom etc. to support the system out of the gate because they dominate the japanese market and they likely wanna get their games on the NX handheld as well. They dont have that kind of pull in the west.

The most important point:

“When last I looked, which was in the last three months, Nintendo has something like $10 billion in cash. I think that the worst case if the NX is a bust, they will lose half a billion,”

“Every time I have ever criticised that company and its management, including its late president, it wasn’t because they were running the company into the ground and about to go bankrupt. It was because I didn’t think they were generating enough profit on the phenomenal assets that they have. I’m not critical of these guys in the way that you should be worried.”

It isnt about "Nintendo is doomed" but what Nintendo could achieve if they finally played their cards right.

He's right.
Does it matter though ? Not really. Western 3rd party support won't help Nintendo. At least, not traditional one. Nintendo can't afford to try to position itself on the same market as the other two, especially since it's not really worth it.

It's a foregone conclusion Nintendo's third party support, particularly Western third party support, is gonna be nearly nonexistent. Way to really draw on the power of that crystal ball, Pach.

As long as they get Japanese third party support, I'm cool with that.
90% of Western 3rd party available on PC anyway.

Can we stop giving this dickhead the oxygen of publicity (or oxygen)?

Wowowo calm down, he have valid points, they own the most classic iconic videogame and still negatives numbers, is weird and surreal for me, they need upgrade his company and modernise it.

That a Nintendo console will have low western third-party support is one of the safest bets one can do. Specially now that the only companies that remain in the console business are the biggest ones (Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Take-Two Interactive, Activision Blizzard, etc.)

By the way, if we exclude portable consoles, the Japanese support has been even worse for Nintendo consoles.

Pachter always knows how to play into the latent Nintendo dislike in the industry and it's community to get his much wanted attention.

Seems like no one is actually reading the statements in the OP - i am not surprised.
I doubt the indies are supporting the NX this time. nintendo will make sure it will have worse 3rd party than the Wii U

Please stop...just stop lol.

It's Nintendo.

Shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that the console is going to have a gimmick, will not be that powerful to match the Sony/MS consoles, and will lack western 3rd party support.

As long as they get Japanese third party support, I'm cool with that.

I think we'll see a ramping up of them financing games from third parties - like Platinum - and partnering with third parties to make games with their own IP - like Team Ninja.

They won't get much Western 3rd party support. Maybe a little at first, but once those early games flop on the NX that support will vanish just like the Wii U.

Can you explain to me how 3rd party games being available on PC helps Nintendo in any way? It sure didn't help the Wii U??

I think western third party devs will support it out the gate as long as Nintendo gives them a console that they want. Nintendo's been pushing consoles that they want onto third party devs since the N64 and have just expected them to go with it. And that's just not happening. If Nintendo doesn't give them a console they like, then they aren't going to support it not matter how successful it is.

But if they do give them a console that they like, then I think they'll support it for at least the first year or so. They'll get CoD, EA Sports, and UBI games. But if the sales aren't here, then they'll bail out after that.

How does this guy still have a job? The way he explained PS4 Neo's hardware was just embarrassingly bad. He's made it abundantly clear he doesn't understand console hardware.

I think he's right. They are in a tough spot, a lot of voices around here seem stuck in 1999 (millenium bug?) saying all they need is a 3rd party AAA dream machine to turn everything around.

Explaining hw is not his job.

But Nintendo likely won't see support from the likes of Bethesda or Gearbox unless a proven core gaming audience is on NX. And even if Activision & EA support the platform at launch, it'd only be with games that you see ported everywhere like the ones you mentioned.
