Hugs are the worst

When did hugging people you barely know become a thing? Yesterday, I was catching up with some friends, some of whom are at best recent acquaintances and one of them tried to hug me to say hello.

I backed away before the embrace and put my hand out of a handshake. Everyone thought I was being super rude and unfriendly, but I just really don't enjoy being hugged by people, unless I'm really close to them. Double that if I barely know them.

It's not like I'm unaffectionate to people I care about, I hug and kiss all members of my family all the time, but someone I've known for at best 3 weeks? Get off me! Is it some American thing? I'd be content with just a wave and greeting, or if they really MUST touch me, I guess a firm handshake would be acceptable. Even then, it's not a business meeting, just stop wanting to touch everyone.

On a side note, this is the problem with the "Golden Rule." It's a bad rule.

Is it some American thing?

No. Girls hug each other. Guys hug girls. Guy-guy hugs are pretty rare unless they're really drunk or haven't seen each other in years or something.

But, regardless of the hugging scenario, we always clap at the end. That part is set in stone.

I can understand not wanting to hug this person if you barely knew them, but there is pretty much no way to back out of an embrace that's being initiated and not look like a rude dickhead to everyone else.

Hugs are the only good thing on this Earth.

I've never been a fan of hugs until recently, when some nurses at the hospital wanted to show me some sympathy.

Of course the fact that they were young, attractive and perky young ladies had nothing to do with it you understand and it was purely for medical reasons.

Everything about this post is correct.

I love giving hugs and getting them, it feels great. Like everybody actually cares about each other, if only for a moment. I wish hugging was more casual and not just something close people do with each other. But I won't force my hugs on you, OP :P

Nah son I like it when guys hug me with their big arm muscles. And girls who have boobs so we can have a boob off. Hugs are great.

I'll always hug someone if they offer, but I'm rarely one to initiate it. I like it as like a genuine rush of emotion sort of thing instead of something that just replaces a casual wave goodbye or hello.

Wow that was very rude of you.

Hugging is a two step process. First you open your arms which shows vulnerability. Then you lock arms with the other person which shows security. You're basically shutting someone off who is opening themselves to you.

I wish hugging was more casual and not just something close people do with each other.

Indeed.

omg, what is this? My asshole inverted itself from the cringe.

It's from a youtuber called Andrew Hales. He's one of those people that do "pranking" videos except they revolve around awkward, cringy interactions instead of the usual mean or sexy pranks (well, mostly; his recent videos have been rather disappointing).
