When did hugging people you barely know become a thing? Yesterday, I was catching up with some friends, some of whom are at best recent acquaintances and one of them tried to hug me to say hello.
I backed away before the embrace and put my hand out of a handshake. Everyone thought I was being super rude and unfriendly, but I just really don't enjoy being hugged by people, unless I'm really close to them. Double that if I barely know them.
It's not like I'm unaffectionate to people I care about, I hug and kiss all members of my family all the time, but someone I've known for at best 3 weeks? Get off me! Is it some American thing? I'd be content with just a wave and greeting, or if they really MUST touch me, I guess a firm handshake would be acceptable. Even then, it's not a business meeting, just stop wanting to touch everyone.
On a side note, this is the problem with the "Golden Rule." It's a bad rule.
