Need For Speed Carbon demo impressions.

So, the 1.06 gig demo is up on Live marketplace, and it gives a decent sampler of the new Carbon features. You can choose from 3 car classes, and use the "Autosculpt" function to custom design the car to your liking (think character creation morphing sliders from Saints Row).

The demo gives you the option of either choosing a Circuit race, or Drift comp. Both have to be completed to unlock the Canyon race.

Circuit shows off the crew system. As you race, a "Crew meter" builds up, and once filled, you can call for a crew member to take out someone in front of you, or someone on your tail. Also, your crew will communicate with you, and will shout warnings if someone is boosting from behind. You can also opt to help a crew member win, by sacrificing yourself to take out the competition yourself. I think this adds a very cool twist to the standard circuit race.

Drift is back and controls pretty nice. Only took me a few laps of the demo track before I was doubling the drift scores of the competition.

Canyon race was awesome. It is basically broken into two rounds. The first round, you chase a car down a winding canyon road, trying not to drive off a cliff. You score points by staying close, get bonuses for crashing into them, and can win instantly if you manage to stay ahead of them for 10 seconds. The second round, you start off with the points you earned from the first round, and they tick off as your opponent tries to keep up with you. This mode was pretty intense. There's nothing quite like drifitng around a canyon corner, shattering a guard rail with your tail and managing to boost out of the drift to safety at the last second.

Nice, solid demo.

Dammit hope I can download it before I head to work in the next few min!

Ok that demo must be getting beat up hard I'm still waiting for the info to come up.

I was left feeling lukewarm... didn't really feel like I was controlling the car. Felt like I was on a rope going through turns and such. I swear, so long as I pointed the stick in the right direction, the car did exactly what was necessary. I shoulda been slamming into stuff!

jesus, i don't want to sound like a frame rate nazi but christ....

this game is holding 30fps SOME of the time... and i need to know... WHY?!

because it's not like the game is stunning looking or , seemingly, doing anything technically stunning, so i'm not sure why on earth it's in the sort of state it's in.

It might be early, but i expected the frame rate to better than this on second iteration games. Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

The NFS games (since the underground series) has always controlled like that. I like these "simplified" controls since I suck at driving games.

Any idea for a PC demo as of yet :) Gotta decide what system to buy it for.

I had a chance to try the PS2 demo, and since they're identical in terms of content, the outcome is pretty similar to the XB360 experience.

I like the idea of the new speed drifting, but the fact that you do not lose the drift score (as opposed to NFSU1/2) makes it far too easy. Anybody, who can control the game normally, will probably beat the drift stage by about a ~150,000 score difference.

The circuit race was pretty much terrible and why the hell do they use those monstrously ugly "speed lines" when you're nearing higher speeds? It felt like I was going to hit some magic speed barrier and then travel back in time like in that movie with Michael J. Fox. The scenery was too blurred out and the blurring effect got worse the faster your car went, so in the end you couldn't see a thing. I hope this turns out better on XB360 and PS3 and PC.

As for the downhill battle, I like the idea of it, but the score system seems kind of meh.

As for the autosculpting feature, then I didn't use it at all. It seems like a boring concept, and I imagine that most gamers will go either for 0% or 100% on all options. It makes no difference in terms of gameplay and the "maxxed out" bodies look bloated and shallow.

Im a demo whore and will download this but NFS has been dead to me since they started that exclusive tuner BS. TDU has replaced it in my heart. :)

The framerate sucks ass this is true. It's especially bad at the beginning of a race when all the wheels are screeching and creating smoke.

I hated the look of the game... It's like they wanted you to throw up. Everything looks so cluttered and blurs incredibly. It feels like the whole time the camera is just... vibrating and shaking and the blur is going and the fps is dropping. I wanted to rip my freakin eyeballs out.

The game is almost entirely focused on it's 'image' and presentation... and it fails in those departments.

Yeah the FPS sucks hard and the graphics look like shit too..I mean Most Wanted looked much better than this crap, I felt I was playing a Ps2 game...

This series needs a breather and some fresh ideas...

30FPS at this stage is inexcusable for such a game!
It's not EVEN 30 fps (as it can't hold it).

WTF is wrong with you, EA?! This game is *NOT* impressive looking. It should be f*cking 60 fps or even a solid 30 with fancy motion blur. They need to scrap their piece of sh*t engine that is still based on NFSU and start over(The game still has a number of issues that point to it being nothing more than a modified NFSU engine).

Most Wanted had a poor framerate as well, but it at least looked fairly nice most of the time. It was an early title too, so they got a LITTLE slack...but this is just crap.

I just left my home theatre room to pop onto GAF and vent over how FVCKING SHIT THE FRAME RATE IN THIS TURD IS.

This is how it works:

1.) You learn the spec of your target hardware
2.) You develop for that spec, be it 30fps or 60fps
3.) If your frame rate dips, you take shit out until it runs at 30fps or 60fps

Not that this game is doing anything that makes you say "DAMN THIS IS SO GOOD LOOKING I CAN SEE WHY IT CAN'T EVEN HOLD 30FPS LIKE A GOD DAMN SATURN GAME"

When was the last NFS game with a stable framerate? You'd almost have to go back to Hot Pursuit 2. NFS2 HP on PS2 was decent, while the Xbox/GC were a sloppy mess. EA should just give up on next-gen, they're failing left right and centre.

I only remember the tearing in NFSMW and it's gone now. It's a bit jaggy, but I didn't notice the frame rate problems. But then, I rarely do. The drift challenge is a bit annoying...

Even HP2 on PS2 didn't have a rock solid framerate. There were plenty of dips, though not this bad.

The demo is ok, nothing special, it was enjoyable but the drifting race is absolutely pointless, what the hell was that about?

That's why I said it was decent ;) They've basically gone a full generation without working out how to get a stable framerate on a racing game that doesn't have a lot going on. Hooray for short development cycles.

I really liked NFS:MW, I am thinking of buying it again to get all the stand-alone milestones. When does the "Greatest Hits" X360 games come out?

If Drifting is a big part of Carbon, I might as well skip it. I hated, hated, hated drifting in previous NFS titles. The fremerate crap doesn't bother me at all, but I see the usual framerate nazis are out in force.

I'll dl the demo though, free is a good price.

I really don't get the appeal of NFS, outside of the "theme" for some. Demo was awful, imo, just as the demo for last year's game was.

And I really don't consider myself a frame rate nazi, either, but with next gen games I'm appreciating more and more how much better a 60fps game feels. One of the things I love about Capcom's next gen engine and games like Ridge 6 and 7.

10/15, althought I played and finished it on the PS2 I'm thinking about picking up a Platinum Hits version of Most Wanted for the 360.

pretty fun demo. seems to be alot of hate(bandwagon?) in here. i mean i hope they fix the framerate and all. i've always been a fan of the series so it's probably no surprise that i thougth the demo was cool. guess it's not for everyone. cant wait to play online though :)

Tell me about it, though so far only DMC4 is 60 fps on capcom's engine. I think. DMC4 is 100 fps roflcopter.

Hot pursuit 2 was the last decent game in the franchise. I wish EA would just step back and adopt a bi-annual dev cycle.

Yeah, as Y2k said, DMC4 is the only announced game running on Capcom's engine that will display 60 fps. Dead Rising and Lost Planet are both 30 fps.

Wow, my fricking eyes. The frame rate is atrocious. Money saved. Thanks for another sub 30FPS experience EA.

My God, how dare they show up such a stuttering mess!?!?!?!?!

Look, play and run like ass - the EA way.

City race: Pretty meh, didn't get a great sense of speed.
Drift: Pretty meh, just don't like drift competitions.
Canyon race: HOLY SHIT, edge of the seat heart pumping madness. Knowing that you can actually go off the cliff and end the race really had me going.

Cinematically speaking, I love the intro to the whole game and I really liked the canyon race intro.

So if they can get that sense of speed up on the city races, I'll tolerate the drift races to enjoy the city and canyon stuff.

Every game can be 60fps if they skirted the psuedo requirements for next gen.

Well, to be fair, it is just a demo.

They're probably optimizing as gaf collectively bitches right this second.

The first one was ****ed up in that manner. I have no faith for this.

It might be just a demo, but this is also nothing new for EA. Other than Burnout Revenge, and I have to go back and play that one again, name me one other EA game on the 360 that even comes close to running 30fps all the time.
