Story:

Fonons. Essential components of all matter on planet Auldrant.

Ages ago, a new type of fonon was discovered — the Seventh Fonon. Its discovery threw humanity into chaos, for if one could use the Seventh Fonon, one could learn the future. Wars over the Seventh Fonon raged across the lands, ending only when the miasma — a poison from within the planet — covered the entire world. This is when Yulia appeared.

A fonist skilled in prophecy, Yulia saw thousands of years into the future and foresaw a way to seal away the miasma. With the guidance of her prophecies, humanity sealed the miasma deep within the planet.

Over two thousand years passed.

The world is ruled by Yulia's prophecy, known as the Score. People believe in the coming “unprecedented prosperity” promised in the Score, never straying from the path set forth in the Score which will lead them to that prosperity. They look to the Score as revealed by the Order of Lorelei, the religion Yulia founded, and hold that the greatest virtue is to follow the Score faithfully.

Yulia's Score tells of a young man who is necessary in order to bring “unprecedented prosperity.” His name is Luke fon Fabre. An heir to the throne of the Kingdom of Kimlasca-Lanvaldear, he was kidnapped as a child by the kingdom's enemy, the Malkuth Empire. Since his return he has been confined to his family's manor for his own safety. He has no idea of the evil that now draws close.

Mieu is a young cheagle. Cheagles, considered holy by the Order of Lorelei, normally live in herds in the forest, but fate will bring him to join Luke and the others on their adventure. The Sorcerer’s Ring that he wears around his tummy allows him to use human speech, and he can use the ring’s fonic power to breathe fire.

Battle System:

Tales of the Abyss uses the "Flex-Range Linear Motion Battle System." Battles take place in real-time with characters fighting on a plane. You can change planes by switching targets or just move around using free-run.

Field of Fonons (FOFs)

One of the newer additions to the game, FOFs can appear on the battlefield when you use attacks of the same element a certain number of times. Within the FOF, more powerful attacks can be executed.

Capacity Cores (C. Cores) and Additional (AD) skills

Equipping different C. Cores can reward various bonus stats during level-up, and different AD skills can be unlocked in the process if you meet minimum requirements.

Fon-Slot (FS) Chambers

These can be used to give your character more abilities during battle. There are four different types that can enhance your special moves when they are equipped, such as extra damage, less spell-casting time, less TP usage, healing, etc.

toa12.jpg

Manual Targeting

In past games, controllable mages were usually limited to targeting only the enemy. Now, players can cast their magic attacks manually in the field.

Overlimit

Party members now have an Overlimit meter below their HP/TP meters which they can trigger at their own will once it’s filled (though it will start decreasing if it isn’t used within 3 battles). Overlimit is gained at Level 15.

Secret Techs (Hi-Ougis)

Those familiar with Tales of Symphonia may recognize these. Hi-Ougis are basically special moves that usually cause a bit more damage than your normal skills. Each party member has one Hi-Ougi which they can start using as soon as they meet requirements. Second Hi-Ougis are unlocked for some of the characters in a New Game +.

Cooking

Pretty much a staple in the series, Cooking allows your party to heal itself considerably after a battle. Different recipes can have different effects, and all the characters are usually able to master a few of the recipes, so it’s usually better to have specific characters cook only certain things most of the time.

cooking2b.jpg

Multiplayer option

Up to four players can participate in battles using a multi-tap (the camera has been fixed and improved for multiplayer mode as well).

Sorcerer’s Ring

Those who played Tales of Symphonia may also remember this. In this game, the creature Mieu helps you use the ring’s powers. Unlike Symphonia, any powers that you obtain in dungeons are yours forever and can be used at your disposal. These include shooting fire, breaking rocks, etc.

Minigames

Quite a few (addictive) games can help you win rare items and money (which are rather hard to come by early on).

Or play a small reiteration of the Lottery, called "Neflyball:"

Skits (Face chats)

Skits are also back in their full glory, and there are now a total of 489 of them. Sadly they are not voiced in the American release... enjoy them though!

I was actually making one. >_>

Do you mind if I post something here about the battle system that you could add later? I think more people need to know about the battle system and maybe character backgrounds?

No I don't mind. post away and I edit it in :)

Any information on a EU release date? So far we've only have Tales of Symphonia GC, Tales of Eternia PSP and Tales of Phantasia GBA.

OK, I added a few things on the party members, and a basic gist of the battle system. Also some other noteworthy stuff.

Dissapointed the $30 pricetag didn't last :(

Trust me, you won't feel cheated if you end up playing it, as long as you don't mind skits being unvoiced, it's totally worth $40.

great work. pm me the edit code for your post. That way I can add it MUCH faster.

I'm not sure if the PM allows for all of the code to be passed through intact, but I sent it regardless... if it doesn't work then you could just quote my first post and add it to yours.

all is added. amazing stuff.

very nice thread
looks a LOT the same as ToS, but that's the only tales of game I played
I guess they're all the same. Even the sorc ring? originality--?
Well as long as it's fun...

Read about the battle system, they've improved the camera, mages can now manually target enemies, and party members can now use items on their own.

Most Tales games use the sorcerer's ring, it's pretty much another staple, like the cooking. The game also allows you to free run now, rather than just stick to a line or target. But it's done by the same team that made Symphonia, hence the similarities. :)

So soon! I'm still working on Disgaea 2 and Okami! My wallet and free time ache.

Excellent post detailing new features and new facets of old ones; hopefully people can overlook the lack of skit VA and purchase this so we may get more in the future. :)

The game is like ToS if ToS had a shot of AWESOME pumped into it. Much, much better game.

Plus every Tales game has had the sorcery ring since the first one so ToS has no originality as well according to you. That's like complaining that every Mario rpg has a fireball attack.

And it looks the same because it was probably a GC game running on the ToS engine but then they moved it to PS2.

Questions~

No random battles?
Can you jump in battles?

A. Yes, no random battles. Plus you can avoid every battle with holy bottles since it makes the enemies run AWAY from you (dark bottles makes them run at you). You'll want to avoid all battles on the overworld map since they load longer than in dungeons.

B. Don't remember but I guess so. I mean when you aren't holding R2 (free run) you're just on a 2d line with your enemy and it's the basic Tales battle system so I'm pretty sure you can (just remember to set control on manual).

Can't wait. I'm gonna be picking this up along with God Hand, maybe Devil Summoner as well. I just wish they would release Tales of Rebirth and the REAL Tales of Destiny 2 in the U.S.

For those debating between this and Devil Summoner since both come out on the same day, Abyss is the preferred choice IMO. Abyss is one of the best epic traditional rpgs with a big world map to explore, tons of dungeons, amazing battle system, great story/characters. DS is a great game, but it's more of a low-key oddball game that leaves you satisfied but doesn't make you go OH SHIT...YESSSSSS! when you play it.

But Devil Summoner is an Atlus game. :\
Even if Tales of the Abyss is a better game (I don't know, I haven't played it), one might want to pick up Devil Summoner first if interested, as they might not have the opportunity later.

oh my god this thread is obnoxious with all of the images

That and one of its prior-announcement possible titles was Tales of Harmonia, so quit asking for it.

What more to say...looks like it'll bomb and Namco Hometek deserves so much to see every title coming from them bombing but Tales series deserves success, so mixed feelings here. Go to a fortune-teller to know if Namco Hometek will improve their localization skills, if they will, then buy, if not, pass and buy the jp one.

The solution is simple. Rent this, and buy Devil Summoner. Who cares about quality, stick it to Namco Hometek and show them who REALLY deserves the money. :P

woah and ToS was good. How come so much better?
Won't play it tough, no ps2

Edit: what the hell is all that namco bomtek and bandai? Where's the "original" one? Just plain namco? I'm not following that news

Holy crap, didn't realize this comes out so soon! And I'm no where near being finished with VP:S yet! Still, a definite purchase, even though it's gonna have to wait a little bit (I just can't play more than 1 console RPG at a time)

That would be funny as sarcasm, though its just annoying as the dead serious trolling it is.

How's it trolling? Companies like Namco Hometek don't deserve to exist. If you disagree, then you can join them. :P

ah, duckroll. so much hate for hometek. what would a tales topic be without you :)

You can jump with up, backstep with back+guard, lunge with forward+guard, and use a forcefield with down+guard.

Great thread BTW, I've been following this and I didn't know a lot of that stuff about the story.

I can't wait for this... :D ...

I'll get Devil Summoner and this... (sorry Okami and Baten Kaitos... you will have to wait a little bit more)...

Yo guys, heres a noob question, but why is Namco Hometek USA hated so much? Its not just because of the edited stuff in some of their RPGs is it?

Speaking of editing, do any of u know whats being edited in the US version of this sweet looking game?

(Hey, i still gotta love NHUSA for bringing this over!! Same goes for XS epIII)

I think I'll pre-order this tomorrow for the little bonus and then pick it up on Tuesday... Does the game run at 30 fps or 60 fps? If it's 60 fps, it might be sluggish through my GameBridge... 30 fps would be perfect.

Because they gimp their RPG releases here. Skits aren't voiced and half of Legendia wasn't voiced. It's just one thing after another with them really.

Non-battle = 30fps
In-battle = 60fps

1. Namco Hometek sucks donkey ass at localization, so I've pretty much accepted that TotA's will suck verily.
2. Anyone know how the muzak is in this one?

Sakuraba's best Tales of, but still not even close to Legendia's score. That's what I have heard.

DarknessTear said:
No voiced skits. They also said "only important scenes are voiced" I'm not sure what that means either.
All scenes that were voiced in the Japanese version (minus the skits) will be voiced in the US version.

Apparently some sites have been pleased with the localization so far.

Yeah, ive heard the same. Legendia's composer was someone called Go Shiina...never heard of him (or is it her :/) but what sweet music!

Im not a big Sakuraba fan, not that i think he sucks or anything, i just never found his music all that memorable, but i really like his Valkyrie Profile music. Cant wait to hear what his music is like in Silmeria.

Back to topic though, this games looking sweet :D

You guys really need to stop bagging on Namco's localization. They have one of the most dedicated localization departments in the business; the fact that a few voices get cut out (Tales) or some blood gets removed (Xeno) is not the fault of the localization crew. Believe me, they want the games as complete as you do. Those are decisions that come down from the great hammer known as "marketing", and unfortunately, marketing rests higher than localization on the totem pole in most large game companies. It's a fact of life we all have to deal with, but it doesn't help when people like you complain at every opportunity with nothing more substantial to say than "their localization sucks". It's inaccurate and unfair, and if you want to make a difference, you should try providing a more intelligent, level-headed argument.

I'm not saying your heat isn't warranted -- I'm saying you're pointing it in the wrong direction, and if this kind of misdirected bashing keeps spreading, it's going to wind up hurting the situation, rather than helping it.
