Great news! Although you’ve all been aware of this development for a little while, we’re delighted to confirm that we will be adding official Oculus Rift support to the PC version of DiRT Rally later this month.

As you’d expect with VR, the update will immerse players into the world of rally like never before – with the challenge of DiRT Rally taking on a whole new dimension. You’ll be absorbed even further into the game as you take on some of the most challenging real life rally locations in the world, battling the elements in glorious VR.

And it’s not just rally that the VR experience will heighten, either. Ever wondered what it’s like to peer over the edge at Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, or look around you on the starting grid of an FIA World Rallycross Championship race? This update will bring Oculus users even closer to these situations and settings, putting them into the heart of the action like never before.

So when’s it arriving, we hear you ask? DiRT Rally VR will release with the Oculus Store on 11th July, while existing PC players will receive an update on the same day too

Is the game going up on the Oculus store as well at least? Or are they actually putting this Oculus only feature on a PC-Steam only platform?

Weird way to push people quicker into using Revive.

Haven't played DR much but now that I've got a wheel and a Vive it's a good time to jump back in. (I'm assuming Revive will work with this)

with all the huss and fuss about treating VR platforms like consoles, isn't vive-begging the same as port begging? i.e bannable?

Just let a mod figure that out?

Anyways, this sounds like great fun. The main game is an awesome return to a real rally racing game. This could be incredible.

See here I am again questioning which system to go with

I have a wheel I own dirt rally and I love the game I would love to enjoy it in VR.

But now I'm left wondering as I don't own either of the vr systems which one to get.
They say this doesn't support vive but yet it seems vive is the market leader in vr from articles I'm reading.

So here I sit not purchasing either of these units until they figure this out.
I already made the choice to adopt the pc platform now I have to make the choice of which platform for a peripheral I'm going to support.
Seems stupid.

How Sim-y is this game? I'm not much of a racing gamer, tried project cars on the Rift and found it incredibly difficult. I'd much prefer a semi-arcade racer like Driveclub.

It really depends. If you're going to be using it mostly for cockpit games like Dirt Rally or Elite Dangerous then the Rift is the better choice because it's more comfortable and cheaper.

It's likely Revive will work with it, and I would expect it to work with almost everything in the future. But yeah, I would understand the reluctance to rely on a "hack".

At any rate, the headsets are pretty close to each other specs wise. Vive has the advantage of having tracked controllers now while Rift owners have to wait until Touch releases. Check your favorite tech sites for comparisons and try to demo each of them if you can. I would try to avoid making a purchase based on the "exclusive" games.

I'm in. The lack of GOOD vr content is disturbing. Steam is like a toilet bowl of shoddy experiences. Plus CDkeys has a $22 steam key. Hopefully the steam version supports Oculus as well.

Already have this but cautiously looking forward to it in VR. Might be intense though.

Only have a vive but I think if it is on steam it should work directly or with a little help from revive.

How about us steam users that supported you when the game was "early access"? I would say most of us that have VR, have Vive's.

Because Oculus is giving funding and Valve/HTC aren't.

Neither Oculus nore Valve/HTC fund me when I bought in the early access promising "VR support".
But yea, I do am saying that out of bitter frustration. With this bad state of mind, I do wish Valve wouldn't allow oculus exclusives on steam so we'd all suffer the same from this terrible situation.
Anyways, have fun Rift owners, I'll be eagerly wating to read your impressions from my sad job simulator's cubicle :(

Desperately hoping PSVR support is likely. The game runs very smoothly at full 1080p so immediately makes it a contender for PSVR. More a case of them making it happen. Fingers crossed we hear more about more VR compatibility at a later date.

Just my personal opinion, but ive never been that bothered by port begging, most of the time its just people asking for information about when its coming out for their specific platform. Most things these days are multi platform anyway. Not everyone can afford to buy all the consoles.

As for the Vive, I'm guessing their priority was to release it onto a new store and get extra revenue from a new customer base, whereas if they updated Dirt Rally with Vive VR support, there would be no extra revenue? I could see this becoming common place with many titles and that Vive will be second with VR support.

EDIT: looks like there's Vive support too!

Someone got ReVive kind of working. Flickering in menus and one eye is blacked out during gameplay. The ReVive dev said he will look into it tonight.

ReVive was updated to support DiRT Rally. Have at it Vive owners!

Protip: Left ctrl resets your VR orientation!

Last night I spent a lot of time fiddling around with the settings to get the game running as close to a steady 90 FPS as possible without sacrificing too much. My specs:
3570K @ 4.3 GHz
GTX 980ti
24 GB RAM

Unfortunately, their benchmark tool seems to run in the 2D window the game uses for the menus and such. I used the Oculus debug tool to keep an eye on FPS while doing some test runs. I ended up settling on 1.333 supersampling through the debug tool, AA off, AO set to ultra low, and everything else a mix of high and medium. That would keep me at 90 most of the time, with ATW having to kick in in the more demanding areas where FPS would dip into the 70s. I'm not sure how performance will be in adverse weather or in Rallycross where there are other vehicles to render.

It didn't take me long to notice that the view wasn't entirely locked to the car, and mostly stayed with the horizon. After awhile I tried turning on the (Options -> HUD -> ) VR vehicle camera motion setting. With the camera locked the motion became much more unstable and reactive to the terrain (which you'd expect driving rally right?) and ultimately more immersive for me. Be careful turning this on if you're susceptible to VR sickness though. You've been warned.

Unfortunately, my Thrustmaster TX wheel has 900 degrees of rotation and Codemasters doesn't have the driver hand/arm animations to cover that. So the in-game wheel motion does not match my TX wheel, and that's a bit of an immersion breaker. I've seen it suggested that they should just remove the hands and arms of the driver in cockpit view so they can get all wheels to properly sync, and I think that would be a great idea.

This is the strongest argument I've seen to buy into VR. I got the 10gb update but didn't know what it was. Sounds like bliss.

Because Oculus is giving funding and Valve/HTC aren't.

Not a valid excuse tbh considering that Valve does offer financial support for VR development and those games arent Vive exclusives. Valves own 'The Lab' isnt even exclusive to the Vive.

Anyway the game works with Revive now so Vive users can now play it.

I want to be on board with this as the library of VR games is pretty slim, but I have always sucked at the DIRT games. I am traditionally a go fast as possible in racing games, so lean on the arcade side for sure. DIRT is what I view to be as more sim, so even with the inclusion of VR, it is not going to change the fact they are historically games I suck at. Maybe down the road when it is on sale.

I tried this for a couple hours last night and what a nice surprise, glad I picked this up during the Steam sale. I do prefer a more arcade feeling racer but the feeling you get in VR made it worth getting used to the realistic controls and now I'm looking up racing wheels. The first time I went careening down a hill and flipped was a bit overwhelming and now I actually close my eyes instinctively whenever I go off the road now. Makes me drive a lot more cautiously, however. Great and unexpected update, hope we get more games patching in support this painlessly in the future.
