It took a bit of Valve time®, but it looks like they have now followed through on the initial promise of lighthouse tracking being a solution available to everyone royalty-free:

The dev kit includes:
  • A modular reference tracked object suitable for attaching to prototype devices (pictured above I guess)
  • Full complement of EVM circuit boards to enable rapid prototyping of your own tracked object
  • 40 individual sensors for building your own tracked object
  • Accessories to enable custom prototypes
  • Two HTC Vive base stations
  • Software toolkit to assist with optimal sensor placement
  • Calibration tools for prototyping and manufacturing
  • Schematics and layouts for all electronic components
  • Mechanical designs for the reference tracked object and accessories
  • Datasheets for the sensor ASICs

For now, it seems like you need to attend a ~$3000 training program to participate, but they indicate that this might change in the future. I don't think it's a huge barrier of entry for most companies seriously interested in hardware development.

Some questions from the FAQ:

Q. Why isn’t Valve charging licensing fees for this technology?
A. We believe that the largest value for our customers and for Valve will come from allowing SteamVR Tracking to proliferate as widely as possible. The existence of more SteamVR-compatible devices will make the SteamVR community more valuable for customers and developers. Having a wide community of hardware developers pushing the platform forward will result in innovations that we Valve would never think of or pursue on our own. Also, all SteamVR devices and hardware components will become cheaper if more of them get made.

Q. What’s the catch?
A. No catch - it’s just the best tracking tech out there, and you can have it for use in your product. There is a cost for the introductory class, so that’s kind of a catch if you want to call it one. But: No licensing fees! No royalties! See the SteamVR Tracking page for details.

Valve continues to impress by how committed they are to an open-platform and furthering that goal.

They were one of the early pioneers of a lot of the VR research that went into these first-generation HMDs, and freely shared it. And now they're giving away their innovative tracking technology too.

This is awesome. It has applications outside of VR that might actually start to be looked into.

:(

In my defense I'd say that (a) that thread dropped way too fast and (b) my OP is superior :P
It also wasn't mentioned in any of the main VR threads, so if you weren't monitoring the main page constantly, you'd think the topic wasn't covered.

Cannot wait to see what all comes of this. Do we know what the manus guys are using? The guys that are making the tracked gloves for hand and finger tracking?

Wonder if their project would go any faster with these kits?
