Can you give some background on this story?
If you include the power brick into the overall volume of the of XB1, the first comparison would likely be accurate. But for the box itself this looks right

For comparison, here's what it used to be
At E3 it was visually shrunk about 60% and claimed 40%. It was wrong. It is now fixed. The end.
I honestly think marketing just goofed and it was too late to fix it.

It's good that they did it. Regardless of how big of a deal people felt it was, it was still a deceptive image. Glad they've got something more realistic now.

In the E3 reveal, there was a 1 second spot in the video where Microsoft said "40% Smaller" but the graphic on the screen appeared to be either more than 40% smaller, or includes the external PSU next to the outline of the older Xbox One, or something about volume that I don't understand.
There was a subsequent 40 page thread on NeoGaf where the OP argued that "Microsoft deserves more flack" for the 1-second frame of the video. The thread both backfired and succeeded, as many users made fun of the OP for arguing that "Microsoft deserves more flack" arguing "There needs to be more outrage!" but many people also agreed that the 1-second image in the video was misleading, despite that the 40% number next to it seems accurate.

I can't remember exactly what I posted in that thread, but I remember feeling very strongly: Yes, the image was deceptive, but this can't possibly matter. I still feel that way, even if Microsoft ended up changing the image.

When i saw this first time when they revealed the console i laughed how much this a absurd lie by comparison.
At least they fixed this consumer deception.
There was a whole thread full of gaffers who got upset that someone would call attention to it. :/

They had the phrase '40% reduction' , right next to a graphic that showed a 40% reduction ... In all dimensions.
Could have been a marketing mistake. Could have been intentional. Who knows

yeah I agree, this is only an issue to people who decide to be upset about video game marketing for some reason. The average person wouldn't have cared I don't think.
