LttP: Tearaway Unfolded.....this game is really, really boring

I've put about five hours into Tearaway Unfolded and I think I'm going to throw in the towel.

- You don't get the ability to jump until an hour into the game. So, this game really isn't even focused on platforming, which is why I bought it in the first place.

- You only fight enemies in arena-style encounters. And these couldn't be any more monotonous if they tried. And there's far too many of them to boot.

- The game offers absolutely zero challenge. There is no penalty for death whatsoever. Like, seriously, none. You respawn immediately where you died and everything you did before you perished remains.

- Drawing on the touch pad is a nightmare.

- The game is constantly interrupting me with new tutorials and reminders of how to perform basic tasks. The game doesn't trust the player to figure anything out for themselves.

Two things I do like. The art style is gorgeous (Maypole Fields is absolutely stunning). And the soundtrack has been pretty impressive.

Overall though, I'm incredibly disappointed in this game. It's made the wait for Yooka-Laylee and the next 3D Mario all the more difficult. I really need a good, new 3D platformer and this definitely was not it. I guess I should have known after being hugely underwhelmed with LittleBigPlanet that Media Molecule is not the developer for me when it comes to platformers.

I would certainly love to hear GAF's thoughts on this game though!

I bought it for Vita and felt the same way. I got about 4-5 hours in and stopped.

Visually pleasing, but just not my type of game.

Tearaway on the Vita is one of my favorites games ever, but i did also found Unfolded kinda boring. I was just wishing the game just end. I don't know if it's cause the game was not actually new for me (i mean, there's new sections and all), but yeah, also felt kinda disappointed by Unfolded.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
My exact experience. I was so hyped but the game is a complete slog to play through. A boring mess covered with a great artstyle.

You can use a phone or tablet with the Playstation App to draw and/or use the camera. This is WAAAAAAY better.

It's actually pretty nice that they give you this option, but I hate having to go outside of a game to get the full experience. Still, it's cool that it's available.

I really liked most of Tearaway. It's charming as hell, nice little story, amazing presentation, aspects of the gameplay and certain levels are a LOT of fun, etc.

But I do agree with you on certain points like the drawing on the touchpad being atrocious as well as how stupid it is that you don't have jump from the start. The arena "combat" is also really tedious and repetitive. I wish the encounters didn't change the camera angle were in more open areas.

Still a good game!

I remember VitaGAF giving me shit for not thinking this was the greatest game on the Vita :lol

The only reason I finished it was so I could sell it the next day

Really liked it. Already had the Vita version, but got the PS4 in the recent sale and was a steal: game, soundtrack and DLC for under $10.

Looks stunning, is a bit slow but fun and is charming.

I felt pretty much the same, until I reached like 2/3 of the game and closer to the end, and It grew a lot on me from there.

Combat gets better (but never gets really good) Some ''enviromental puzzles'' are really fun and also somewhat challenging and I really loved the ending itself.

What got me there was what you listed though. Enviroments, art style, music, animations and the beautiful weirdness of it all. Towards the end all of those things get even better, and my conclusion is that it was a great experience overall

I found it great, but I just remembered that I haven't finished the game yet so maybe I'm mistaken.

Charming as all hell though, and I really liked the Vita game

Are you being intentionally hyperbolic or did it actually take you that long to get the jump ability? It really shouldn't have taken anywhere near that long unless you spent s lot of time drawing or something.

I got a lot of enjoyment out of the platforming and jumping was pretty prominent across my whole playthrough.

As for penalizing death, you could go for the specific no death challenge of escorting the gofer through stages.

Really enjoyed it on Vita but all the additions in Unfolded completely broke the pace and made it boring as hell

I actually really enjoyed the concept, presentation, and content a lot even if the gameplay was never that viscerally satisfying. I'm a huge sucker for really simple, charming games though.

Maybe it was like, 45-50 minutes or something. It was definitely very close to an hour.

I agree with OP. I hated the constant gimmicks when I just wanted to do some straight platforming. Just a really pretentious game.

I've got to disagree, I found both versions to be superbly entertaining, charming and fun. I am a huge sucker for 3d platformers though.

Only played it on the Vita but I see it as more of an exploration game (walking sim) slash adventure game with some puzzle elements rather than a platfomer. If you were looking for an action game or platformer then this isn't it. I loved it personally.

I actually love the game -- even being cognizant of your criticisms, which are pretty valid -- mostly as a leisurely, beautiful stroll with a heartwarming story.

You are right, it's not necessarily an engaging platformer or combat game, but it's not meant to be. The question then is whether or not the rest of the stuff gets you really into it or not.

It did it for me, but knowing a little bit about your taste, I can definitely see why it didn't work for you. What I can say at the very least is that it does get much, much more "gamey" as you move forward in the game, but I don't think it will ever be the platformer you hope it would be, I'm sorry to say :(

I was really excited about it coming to PS4 because it looked like a fun platformer, but yeah it was just not fun to play.

Never played unfolded but I enjoyed it on Vita though I was really hoping for more platforming levels like the ones towards the end and I was really bummed they cut out the parts they should in the trailer of trapping the monsters.

Everyone kept going on about how good the ending was but it didn't resonate with me.

I played a couple of hours and didn't find the gameplay any fun. The drawing stuff and sticker stuff was likewise boring.

The colors and art is cool, though.

I finished it, and while it definitely does give you some fuzzy feelings towards the end, overall it was a pretty dull and not so memorable experience. I was expecting something more considering how (over)hyped the game was, but I guess that's mostly my fault. Still, I don't regret playing through it.

Holy shit at the hate in this thread. I enjoyed the ps4 version even more then the vita one. Loved the art and how Mm kept introducing new concepts and controls throughout. To each their own.

I'd much rather Media Molecule were concentrating more on games like this, rather than the create-your-own types we're going to be getting with Dreams.

I think it's one of the most creative games ever artistically. I loved it. It does have major pacing problems, but when you get to the first area where the game lets you fly, it's incredible. The more you put in to that game, the more you get out.

Miles better than LBP.

It never really grabbed me but I return to it every once in a while when I don't feel like thinking. I paid like $15 so it's decent game at that price.

The gameplay definitely has issues, but I found the aesthetic and super charming sense of adventure and creation made it a really enjoyable experience.

I liked it. Or rather, I liked the Vita version. A better fit as a portable game played in smaller doses.
The PS4 game also had worse music.

I haven't tried it on the PS4 but I found the PSV game lovely. Maybe it lost its charm during the transition? It just doesn't translate well I feel. Plus maybe the gameplay and level design changes were for the worse.

They even changed the music? Why?

- The game offers absolutely zero challenge

Welcome to almost every non-indie platformer. I thought the same about the last 3-4 Mario games I played. I mean 3D World is praised on this site by nearly everyone and it's a complete snoozefest until you beat the game and unlock bonus worlds. 3D Land doesn't even do that and gives you a full snoozefest.
